Champions League income needed for Champions League budget

1182

I suspect we have not seen the best of Daryl Murphy, who has proven to be a solid Championship and fleeting Premier League player in England but has been unable to retain a place in the SPL, but his hamstring injury, suffered after the long flight to Pennsylvania, will be a blow on two levels for Celtic.  They are denied a squad player for the crucial Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs and are likely to unable to loan him out, easing more pressure from payroll.

Daryl was singled out for credit (here) for the way he changed the shape of Celtic in our opening league game of the season against Aberdeen.  He would have been useful to Neil Lennon this coming week.

News that Helsingborgs have lost their top striker is welcome but is not quite ‘like signing a new player’ for Celtic.  Let’s hope they haven’t lost their Kenny Miller only to find their Jordan Rhodes.

There can seldom have been more financially important games to the club than the Helsingborgs tie.  Celtic accounts are usually released mid-August (16th last year) but I don’t anticipate any rush to publish this year.  Last season’s accounts could well see the largest loss in our history as the club chased their first league win in four years (insert standard lecture on financial responsibility program, avoid urge to run legacy Sir David Murray malware).

I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).  Football finance lessons are clear, if you have a Champions League budget you need Champions League income.  Time for this team to step up to the challenge.  Get along and pack the place out on the 29th.

No regrets this time.

Bed early tonight if you are off to Dingwall in the morning. I hope we see a few of the young lads.

The Hat was certainly one of the best Celtic players ever. I remember the England v Scotland under15 schoolb(h)oy international at Wembley in 1980 and he was clearly something special even at that early stage in his career. He was absolutely dedicated to the club and a fine man as well. Hear he’s loving it in Oz.

On the other hand and imho, Kenny D was the best player I’ve ever seen play at Parkhead. It’s just a pity that he lost that winning smile when he went into management. Oh, and I can remember going to Hamden to see him play for the national team and being booed by the orc element – could not believe it.

As far as Murphy is concerned, I can’t agree that he made much of a difference against Aberdeen. Route 1 option as far as I could see and we should expect better than that.

With the investment the Board has made in playing staff over the past few years, a low average age in a talented squad gaining experience hand over fist, we should make short work of Helsingborgs.

Scottish Football Association: The Rangers Football Club Already Making TroubleBy Daniel O’Connell(Contributor) on August 16, 2012.

Less than a month into the new Scottish soccer season and the SFA’s newest member club is causing trouble.

Before I go on, you may consider the repeated use of “Rangers Football Club” and “The Rangers Football Club” unnecessary.

This is actually a necessary distinction to make as “Rangers Football Club” is the club formed in 1872, which is no longer a member of the SFA and will soon be liquidated.

“The Rangers FC” is the new name of Sevco Scotland, a consortium fronted by former Sheffield United FC Chief Executive Charles Green, which purchased the assets of Rangers Football Club in June this year.

They are two separate, unrelated legal entities, one of which has purchased the real estate of the other.

A fiction has emerged amongst Rangers supporters that somehow the “club” and the “company” are separate and that The Rangers Football Club Ltd has purchased Rangers Football Club from Rangers plc.

This is emphatically not the case.

There is no legal distinction or difference between the club and the company. They are one and the same.

In 1872, Rangers Football Club was a club. That is, a group of individuals who have come together to form an association with members and are run by a committee.

A club’s members pay an annual subscription, and its members are personally liable for any debts incurred by the club.

Around the turn of the 20th century, most soccer clubs in the UK incorporated, partly to raise funds and partly to protect members from having to pay debts from their own pockets.

Incorporation means that the club sells shares in itself, and the new directors are not personally liable for any debts incurred.

So it was that in 1899 Rangers Football Club incorporated.

Investors bought shares in the club, which changed its legal status from a club to a private company limited by shares.

The new investors owned shares in Rangers Football Club, which was now called Rangers Football Club Ltd, the wording which to this day adorns the gates of Ibrox Stadium.

There was, and is, no separate company and club.

In the early 1980’s, Rangers Football Club Ltd was floated on the stock market.

This involved another change in legal status, from a private limited company to a public limited company.

In the UK, the names of public companies are not allowed to end in “Ltd,” or “Limited,” so Rangers Football Club Ltd became Rangers plc.

As a public company, a controlling interest in Rangers plc could be purchased by anyone with the cash to buy the necessary number of shares and a willing seller.

So it was that in 1988 a controlling interest in Rangers plc was purchased by David Murray and Rangers plc became part of Murray International Holdings.

Then in 2011, Murray’s shares in Rangers plc were purchased by Wavetower, owned by Craig Whyte.

After completing the purchase, Wavetower adopted the name, “The Rangers FC Group Limited.”

Neither of these takeovers required a transfer of Rangers’ membership of the SFA to the new company who had bought Rangers plc.

Charles Green’s Sevco Scotland (now The Rangers Football Club Ltd) consortium did not buy Rangers plc, the legal entity formed in 1872.

They purchased Ibrox Stadium, the Murray Park training complex and a car park.

That is why Rangers’ SFA membership had to be transferred from Rangers Football Club to The Rangers Football Club.

You cannot “transfer” something from yourself to yourself!

The Rangers FC did not qualify for SFA membership as they do not have the three years’ worth of audited accounts required, so in a quirky deal, the SFA agreed to transfer the membership of the now defunct Rangers FC to the company who purchased the assets and business of the old club.

As a condition of transferring the membership, The Rangers FC had to agree to pay all debts owed to Scottish soccer clubs by the now defunct Rangers FC.

This week, following rumblings of discontent over The Rangers FC signing several players beyond the price range of most SPL clubs, Green announced that The Rangers FC has paid all debts owed by the now defunct Rangers FC.

    That it seemed, was that.

Until yesterday, when Dundee United FC released a statement that, contrary to Green’s announcement, they have still not received their full share of the gate money for the Scottish Cup tie played at Ibrox in February.

This statement has sparked a great deal of confusion, with Green claiming that the SPL had earlier agreed to pay the money to Dundee United, which the SPL deny.

The dispute hinges on a letter written by the SPL to Rangers FC on May 18, informing Rangers that their prize money from finishing in second place in season 2011-12 would be withheld and distributed to those clubs owed money by the now defunct club.

    Green stated:

“A letter from the SPL to the club—dated May 18, 2012—stated: ‘The board decided to accede to the application of Dundee United and accordingly, the sum will be withheld from the next sum payable by the SPL Limited to Rangers and the sum will be paid by the SPL Limited to Dundee United.’ Why the SPL have not paid Dundee United the outstanding sum as previously agreed is a question that they need to answer. We wrote to Dundee Utd on Monday explaining the SPL had previously confirmed they would pay it.”

Not strictly true. On May 18, The Rangers Football Club did not exist.

It was formed on May 29 (as Sevco Scotland) and did not buy the business and assets of Rangers Football Club until June 14.

So the SPL wrote to Rangers Football Club at a time when it was still a member of the SPL and clinging on to life by its fingertips.

Working on the assumption that Rangers Football Club would still be a member of the SPL this season, the SPL agreed that they would withhold prize money from Rangers Football Club and distribute it to its Scottish soccer creditors.

The SPL’s agreement, then, was with Rangers Football Club.

No such agreement was made with The Rangers Football Club, which is a different club, and has no right to the prize money won by Rangers FC last season.

Following protracted negotiations, The Rangers Football Club was granted Rangers FC’s membership of the SPL with several conditions, one of which was that The Rangers Football Club would pay any money owed by Rangers Football Club to other Scottish clubs.

Charles Green and The Rangers Football Club agreed to that condition but are now claiming that they should not have to pay money owed to Dundee United.

The Rangers Football Club appears to be in clear breach of the agreement by which they were granted membership of the SFA.

The SFA must now either act to ensure The Rangers Football Club keeps its agreement to pay Rangers FC’s Scottish soccer debt, or lose control of the situation altogether.

Whether there exists the will within the SFA to do so remains to be seen.

Breaking its own rules to admit The Rangers Football Club is turning out to be a major mistake by the Scottish Football Association.

  3. paul67: “I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).”

i can’t quite get my head around that sentence. man united are reportedly paying robin van persie £235,000 a week. i doubt our high earner could make that on championship manager.

i’d say our wages are more in line with a europa league budget.

intransigence suggests that we may well get exactly what we paid for.

  4. NL on players out for game:”F Twardzik, Dylan, Murphy, Stokes, Bangura, Ibrahim, McCourt, Brown, Forrest and Hooper is a doubt as well.”

have i missed something here, f. twar, dylan, murphy, bangurra, ibrahim and mcourt are rarely used in our first team. stokes is generally used in spl rarely in european competition.

we have doubts over brown, forrest and hooper

we are well catered for in midfield and i think we are better when brown is not in the team. in european games away from home i would be more than happy to play sammy as the lone striker with commons supporting from the left.

    “Afternoon All,

The Kano Foundation are running our usual Predictor Competition once

again. This season though it is going to be a fully online version –

basically the same idea as the one we ran for the Euros in June.

However as this is is to try to taise some funds for the Foundation we are

asking for a small joining fee, details of how to pay etc will be sent to

you all once you have joined up. The fee this year will be a one-off

    payment of £5.

We had a fantastic response to the Euros Predictor and would love to have

a similar if not greater response to this one.

Currently it will be an EPL based Predictor only (they dont so SPL

apparently) but we are considering doing a Celtic-based idea, but more on

    that later.

Anyway it’s dead simple to join up, simply clink the link below, enter the

Rio Ferdinand has been fined £45,000 for retweeting an insult of Ashley Cole after the John Terry trial. Bringing the game into disrepute. Not particularly funny, but nowhere near as disreputable as McCoist whose outburst, on Rangers TV if I am not mistaken, following the decision of the Independent Tribunal, verged on criminal incitement. McCoist should be in front of a Judge, not a Committee. Green is a relative ingenue, but even so, pandering to the lowest common denominator is not exactly funny either, even if his explanation, for the use of the word bigot, is laughable.

Speaking of which…..remember the phrase ‘but for the grace of God, there go I”. As I was passing the Sheriff Court I looked at the queue and thought similar….although in my case the phrase ‘but for the fact that DNA testing wasn’t around, there go I’.

  20. philvisreturns on

Zbyszek – There has been a tendency as the years have rolled by, and the global horror that was WW2 recedes ever further to the fringes of living memory, to focus ever more closely on the Holocaust and the Jews in Europe, at the expense of the wider context.

But the awful reality of WW2 was that people were being slaughtered in their millions from the jungles of east Asia to the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

Everybody knows about the Holocaust because there have been literally thousands of films and TV shows and books made about it, and there are museums all over the world dedicated to it, even in countries that had nothing to do with the Holocaust. Comparatively few people have heard of the Katyn massacre, the Bleiburg death marches, the mass murders perpetrated by the Japanese in China and Korea, etc. As a result, it’s easy for us to develop a simplistic and unrealistic view of the decisions the Allied war leaders had to make.

Roosevelt and Churchill were trying to win a war in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans simultaneously, against ferocious and resourceful enemies, with fresh horrors seemingly on a daily basis.

To hold them even partially to blame for what an enemy power did inside hostile occupied territory seems to me to be grossly unfair. Particularly when Churchill and his country at least had gambled its very existence as a free society on winning the war. (thumbsup)

  21. Here lads, I do not post very often, but to this ridiculous DR spread that it is a potential world record for 4th tier attendance this weekend at Mordor, easily smashed.

imo brown has drive and can be useful playing on the right hand side of a midfield 4, he is not as good as victor, kayal, ledley or ki when in the centre of the pitch.

he offers more protection than forrest when on the right, but is not as quick or creative. so then it comes to a game to game situation

that’s the best part of two months on the road, away from loved ones and home comforts.

i know a small part of that was international duty, but still…

no wonder (going back to yesterday’s article) the players are picking up niggly injuries.

two months travelling, i’m surprised they’re not all going down with deep vein thromboses and homesickness.

seriously, surely if you want to build a confident, settled side, you have to give them a bit of home comfort. this season’s pre-season work was ridiculous. what was germany all about? kickabouts against the clydes, dumbartons and mortons of this world would have served the same purpose and allowed us to look after our players in our own facilities.

players earn a lot of money so i’m not predisposed to feel sorry for them, but i think spending that amount of time on the road is absurd.

of course, she might just have been away on a long holiday, thus making me a complete choob!!! ;-)

He knew that he was a fabulous crosser of the ball but he also realised that he didn’t have the skill or the pace to go by a player.

He was outstanding. Strong, powerful, read the game welland comfortable bringing the ball out of defence.

He didn’t display any of these attributes against Norwich. You could be correct that coaching could aid him in playing this position in future and that pre season games count for little once battle has commenced.

I was just astonished at how poor he was that night and would much prefer that he stays in centre midfield as often as possible.

That was a secret far more important. Poland,as you know, helped us on that.

I think that our strong midfield plays a fairly conservative game most of the time at too slow a pace. It may be an early season effect, gaining fitness and so on or a constant niggling worry about the bhoys at the back. Against Aberdeen it was only when Victor W moved into midfield that I saw a player who wanted to take a risk on the pass and move for the return. He’s a winner and the rest of them should be more positive, like Joe L on the break in Finland.
