Champions League income needed for Champions League budget

1182

I suspect we have not seen the best of Daryl Murphy, who has proven to be a solid Championship and fleeting Premier League player in England but has been unable to retain a place in the SPL, but his hamstring injury, suffered after the long flight to Pennsylvania, will be a blow on two levels for Celtic.  They are denied a squad player for the crucial Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs and are likely to unable to loan him out, easing more pressure from payroll.

Daryl was singled out for credit (here) for the way he changed the shape of Celtic in our opening league game of the season against Aberdeen.  He would have been useful to Neil Lennon this coming week.

News that Helsingborgs have lost their top striker is welcome but is not quite ‘like signing a new player’ for Celtic.  Let’s hope they haven’t lost their Kenny Miller only to find their Jordan Rhodes.

There can seldom have been more financially important games to the club than the Helsingborgs tie.  Celtic accounts are usually released mid-August (16th last year) but I don’t anticipate any rush to publish this year.  Last season’s accounts could well see the largest loss in our history as the club chased their first league win in four years (insert standard lecture on financial responsibility program, avoid urge to run legacy Sir David Murray malware).

I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).  Football finance lessons are clear, if you have a Champions League budget you need Champions League income.  Time for this team to step up to the challenge.  Get along and pack the place out on the 29th.

No regrets this time.

Bed early tonight if you are off to Dingwall in the morning. I hope we see a few of the young lads.

of course, but i’d say the average budget of champions league teams, ie the group stage sides, is way above our own. look even at the pot 4 (provisional) clubs…

Paris Saint-Germain, Galatasaray, Celtic, Borussia Dortmund, BATE Borisov, Dinamo Zagreb, Montpellier, FC Nordsjælland

there are very few teams even there which would have a similar budget to ours… PSG, dortmund, gala… these clubs dwarf us financially. to suspect our budget is similar to theirs is frankly nonsense. taking an average of all 32 clubs, as opposed to the bottom 8, the differences would be stark. sorry, but i still believe we have, at best, a europa league budget.

I think Scott can play centre to wide very well, he has energy that I want in my Celtic team.

The best of Scott Brown is definitely still to come as he matures, we ain’t seen nothing yet IMO.

Celtic fans love skilled wingers, and quite rightly so, Steve was not in that mould but the game is not about individuals it is about the team and a good team can make the space so that an expert crosser like Guppy could flourish.

New players just register normally, will take no longer than ten minutes.

This year I’ve gone for the classic league, literally most points wins over the course of the season compared to last years head to head system, where you played different people every week and three points for win, one for draw etc.

The Paul McStay/John Collins discussions is interesting as they were two of my favourite players. Both were model professionals, had great engines, were excellent passers of the ball, had vision and were strong in the tackle for their size.

I always thought Paul liked to play facing the opponent’s goal, whereas John C was equally happy to play in more of an inside-forward position.

I can appreciate and applaud Paul McStay’s commitment to the cause over a number of years, while John Collins’ drive for self improvement led him away – with perhaps a touch of personality clash with the manager thrown in.

If I had to choose between them I would have the one in my team whose goalscoring rate was double the other.

However, two finer ambassadors for the Club you could not find.

  20. Huckleberrytim

Good comment. And it emphasises my point about Paul.

It may have been a dark time, when Sauron Murray was working his magic but we still had that superb quality that typifies Celtic to it’s very core.

  21. NB… following on from th champions league seedings, in the event anybody’s interested…

to go into pot 3 (hatch, chickens) we would need 3 teams to be knocked out from…

dynamo kiev (v borussia moenchengladbach), fc basel <(v cfr cluj), panathanaikos (v malaga), and anderlecht (v ael limassol). other teams above us play teams with higher coefficients than us, so even if the seeds get knocked out, we still wouldn’t move up.

anyway, i think i’ve hogged the blog a lot today, so i’ll go back to lurking for a wee bit. sorry for boring you all. :-)

  22. petec

your right about the energy, brown does appear to run and run and run, however, i think he is often drawn to the ball and if your playing in a midfield two you cant afford for one of that 2 to go chasing everything, being isolated in the middle of the park is a lonely place and your team will get done by good teams

i do think he can do a good job in right midfield and he seems able to hold his position out there, but often appears to lack that when playing centremid, just my opinion mind

  23. Jordan Rhodes. £6-7m for a player who hasn’t yet scored a goal in the Championship

We paid an initial £1.8m for Gary Hooper who had scored 20 goals in the Championship

For a player at Rhodes’s stage in his career, we shouldn’t be paying more than £3m

I cannot for the life of me see the club paying minimum £6m for an as yet unproven player at a decent level

I’m sure our scouts have will have identified a player who will do the job for us, but he won’t cost more than £3m in a transfer fee imo

The days of Celtic even spending £6m on a single player are long gone

  24. PFayr – May i suggest a wee rioja or two to ease yer pain:)

I’m looking forward to seeing a few of the younger lads tomorrow; we have plenty of time to win the league; as MWD would say; PUFF….Ahhhhhhhhh.

I really appreciate your posts and your opinions on the subject.

The problem is that said something after watching the interview with Karski, you give your opinions without watching that film!

I still recommend to watch that interview because it’s really good lesson, better than some books.

I did not come to post my claims against Great Britain or the USA, or look for the sympathy for my country for the martyrs during WW2. I did come to post interesting film as a consequence of the discussion from yesterday about Warsaw ghetto. One of the opinions from yesterday discussion was: that there was no help to the Jews who suffered in the ghetto. The reference of that opinion was rather the Poles.

I thought the opinion was not right. Those who don’t want to watch the film they don’t have to but those who read yesterdays posts could go for it and learn more. That was my only intention of the post on the first page.

I just realized that my opinion on this matter might be found like a try to forget about Polish guilds an putting the blames on the others. If you guys felt my post was that try I do apologize.

My intention was rather to focus on the lesson from the past.

As for the Poles during that time.

I do not fear to take the blames for the tragedy of the Jews in the ghetto and in Poland.

There were plenty of the Poles who helped the Jews to survive even when those Poles risked their lives.

There were plenty who helped, but….

There were some who helped for money

There were some who denounced the Jews.

There were probably some Poles who killed the Jews to make the robbery easier.

The subject is very thought to make opinions on it.

We must accept that during the times like WW2 we have heroes, but in these times some people turn to be worse than animals.

  26. paul mcstay could control a game had a great range of passing/ vision and on his day was a match for the very best.

john collins was a quality player, but was a different type of player, not as good as mcstay imo, but few were!!!!!!

paul stuck with the club throughout his career, john walked away

on and off the pitch mcstay was the mhan

I know what you are saying but we can’t have both the qualities in a player whilst we are in this League. I see all the Barca players with the exact same work ethic as Scott, especially under Guardiolla as it wasn’t the case under Rijkaard. That was the very simple reason they became, IMO, the best team ever.

Scott leads by example, every game he gives it everything – and for me I cannae ask for any more than that. I’m sure the stats, when he is playing, are very good as well.

    Celtic Charity Fund – Kiberia

A colleague of mine is aiming to help out with The Celtic Charity Fund in Kiberia , Kenya. His message is contained below: As he says the videos may be disturbing but expose the reality of life in Kiberia. If you are able to help him and Kathleen he will be most grateful and also if you could pass this around to others that may wish to contribute that will also be helpful:

On 13th January 2013, Kathleen Malko and I will be travelling as volunteers – on behalf of the Celtic Charity Fund – to help work in schools and orphanages in the largest slum in Africa – Kibera, Kenya.

We are privileged to be part of a group of 25 participating in this venture, but first we have both been tasked with raising a minimum of £2,000. SO WE ARE KINDLY ASKING FOR YOUR HELP.

Your donation – no matter how big or small – will enable us to support the Charity to the maximum possible. Our aim is to exceed the total required.

Donations can be made securely by clicking ( CTRL+click) on the following link: http://www.everyclick.com/derekkenya

and then moving the curser on that screen to the Green ‘Give Now’ button and clicking on Donate (Pink Button).

To assist your understanding of what the charity is all about and the desperate need for funds, I would be delighted if you could take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to click on http://kiberacelticfc.com/ to find out about Kibera and the work of the charity, or click on the links at the bottom of this request and watch some of the videos, which vary from 2-10 mins.

The videos may be disturbing for some people but they unfortunately portray every day life for others less fortunate than us.

I hope you are as moved as Kathleen and I and want to support us to help the children of Kibera. Thank you for taking the time to read this

Over the next few months we will be organising a few fundraising events and activities and we will keep you posted of these and of our progress.
