Champions League perils for play-off seeds

The Champions League play-off round can be a horrible place for seeds against teams with lesser reputations.  Celtic drew Helsingborgs from a group of five possible teams.  Three of the other four were away from home in the first leg but two recorded wins.

Hapoel Kiryat Shmona lost 2-0 away to Bate Borisov while Maribor lost 2-1 away to Dinamo (no longer Croatia) Zagreb.

Romanians, Cluj, recorded an excellent 1-2 away win against our old friends Basel, while AEL Limassol beat Anderlecht 2-1 in Cyprus.  Maribor and Cluj will fancy their chances of eliminating the seed, while Limassol have a fighting chance.

In other news, HJK Helsinki are not going to drop to the Europa League group stage after we eliminated them from the Champions League earlier this month.  Last season’s finalists, Athletic Bilbao, hit them for six (first cricket metaphor on CQN?) last night.

  3. Celtic manager Neil Lennon wants to bring in two new faces before the transfer window closes.

With midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng on the verge of completing a £6m move to Swansea, Lennon is keen to bolster the Scottish champions’ squad.

However, the Celtic boss said recruits were unlikely to arrive before next Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Helsingborgs.

Midfielders Joe Ledley and Beram Kayal face a period on the sidelines.

“Joe has a grade one groin injury and he will be out for a couple of weeks. Beram has had a reaction to his other ankle and he will be maybe three to four weeks,” explained Lennon.

“The injuries aren’t majorly concerning, particularly Joe’s injury.

“Joe has been one of the best signings since I came to the club, and so consistent; he is a big loss to us.

“Beram is a little bit of a worry because it is his other ankle which is giving him bother.

“It is unfortunate. but the midfield is probably the strongest department at the club.

“We have Victor Wanyama to come into the squad and we have options.”

Lennon was keeping tight-lipped on his transfer targets but did admit he admires Japanese forward Yuki Otsu, who impressed during the Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old is with German club Borussia Monchengladbach, although the Celtic boss was cool on an imminent move.

“He’s a player that we like but we’ll probably not do anything this window,” he said.

“We’ll just keep tabs on him for now.”

Celtic are in a very strong position to reach the lucrative group phase of the Champions League, having beaten Helsingborgs 2-0 in the first leg of their play-off in Sweden.

However, Lennon stressed that the club will remain prudent in their spending.

“If we do qualify, we won’t be spending £6m or £7m or anything like that, it will be sensible,” he continued.

“We have a structure in place, regardless of whether we go through or not, so it will be players within that bracket that we think wil enhance us.

“Obviously, we’ll have a better chance of attracting better players if we get through to the Champions League.

“We’ve been working away in the background for three or four players.

“Whether we get over the line with those, I don’t know, but I can’t see us bringing anybody in before Wednesday.

I absolutely agree with you,he is an animal on the park, the latest in a long line of thugs fed on raw meat and hatred.

But IMO that was NOT why Kayal was injured that night.

  5. ohtis-We are in a very good position, would be silly IMO to risk any more of our first 11 before Wednesday

honest question, if I knew where to go I’d look it up myself

  7. Ten Men

I think that is a sensible approach to take. I would like two new faces in addition to a replacement for KI but would not be too fussed if we added a CB in addition to KI’s replacement (who i presume will be Markus Henriksen).

I go on a bus from Glasgow mate.

At the moment there isn’t a bus running to away games from Hamilton. My own bus went to Dingwall on the Friday last weekend but I couldn’t go as I had a party to attend.

Spent hours on the phone trying to get a bus leaving from Hamilton on the Saturday morning without success.

Eventually, with the assistance of good ol BT I got a seat on the Blantyre bus.

That’s what peeked my interest. I canny imagine murderwell changing their style so I wondered how that went down in a european game?

  15. I think that we should not be lulled into a false sense of security

because all the other teams voted the huns out the league that

all of a sudden they will become – Celtic friendly.

The hammer-throwers will be given license to minimise the loss of the

huns by the refs they’ve left behind. imo.

  26. The Keatings going on loan situation has me thinking that there is to much disconnect between youth and first team.

There seems to be no strategic path from youth to senior.

The coaches need more consistency in playing styles to make path less difficult
