Champions League primer

Kairat arrive in Glasgow today after a disruptive trip across the globe.  Unlike Celtic when they travel in the opposite direction next week, Kairat cannot keep to their usual body clock routine.  It will be midnight in Almaty when tomorrow’s game kicks off – 2am by fulltime.  For professional athletes, that’s a challenge.

There are seven Champions League playoff ties this week: five in the champions section, two non-champions.  I watched Bodo/Glimt eliminate Lazio from the Europa League quarterfinal in April.  Ange Postecoglou (eventually) got the better of them in the semifinal, but I expect them to make the cut against Sturm Graz.

Benfica are likely to progress against Fenerbahce, while I fancy Copenhagen against Basel.  Red Star should have enough to overcome Cypriots Pafos.  Ferencvaros are not the side they were five years ago, they could fall to Qarabag.  As for Brugge?  They have traded big this summer, spent €36m and sold €82m of talent.  That’s a lot of change to pull together for their trip to Ibrox tonight.  The Belgians should still edge it.

With what I am assuming is mischievous ‘paper talk going round, a friend suggested if we are looking for an older striker, it’s a pity Gerd Muller passed away a few years ago.  Otherwise, he would have been ideal.

  1. Just heard from TalkSports betting man that we are 1/12 to win tonight, and FC Kairat are 20-1 to win.

No value in backing Celtic unless predicting a high scoring win, which obviously we would all welcome. Not sure if we have that kind of firepower at the moment absent Kyogo, Jota and Kuhn. Know money is not everything, but the facts are, over the last twenty five years or so, our best turnovers have been achieved when we have played in the group stages of the CL and I would guess in last season’s CL League format. The corollary being our turnover suffers when we have failed to reach that same level of qualification. We have the opportunity to take the lions share of the SPL’s cut of the CL fortunes by getting a good result tonight, and build on that teamwise. Hope the bookies have got it right, but you do not win games or races in the betting shop.

    100% we have regressed.

Straight line since Ange walked out the door leaving really strong squad which had just won a treble.

A squad he and the club had built in 4 windows.

We have got progressively weaker since.

    An Dun – thanks again.

    To be clear.

    Brendan was asked a question.

He didn’t refuse to answer the question.

    Quite the opposite.

    He answered the question decisively.

Folks – I’m simply posting the man’s words.

    His words. Not mine.

I’m not reporting his “hidden message” (aye, that old one)

    Nor his body language.

If what the manager SAYS publicly doesn’t align with your outlook?

Respectfully … take it up with him.

  4. Celtic Mac

    Spot on sir.

    Look at last nights results.

    3 away wins.

Not many saw Qarbag winning 3-1 in Hungary

Few expected Paphos to win in Belgrade

Maybe a few expected Brugge to win their tie

  5. Timbhoy

You are hilarious 4-0 or 5-0.

How many such results have their been in European comps so far this season out of 200 or so games ?

    Answer is less than 5.
