Champions League silver lining

246

Uefa Champions League financial distribution changes significantly this season from the previous model, in line with changes to the tournament itself.  The old TV Pool no longer exists, replaced by a Value Distribution payment, which is majority based on the value of your TV market, with a factor determined by how well you have performed in the previous 10 years compared to other participants.

Celtic’s European performance over the last decade has not been great, but this year’s Champions League has so much fresh blood that we are now guaranteed to be in Pot 3.  Aston Villa, Bologna, Girona, Stade Brestois and Stuttgart have replated more familiar names from the Big Five leagues.  Our distribution will therefore be higher than it would if Chelsea, Roma and Lyon etc. qualified.

I know you would have been as upset as the TV panel at last night’s result from Hampden, but there are reasons to cheer up.  Celtic being Scotland’s only Champions League participant, instead of sharing the Value Distribution pot, is likely to earn us an extra £4m.

Also, do not underestimate the value of our Coefficient Monkeys being in the Europa League, where they consistently earn Scotland a high number of points, compared to their only venture in the Champions League, where they were the group stage’s worst ever entrant.  So every cloud….

The night was not so good for everyone in Scottish football.  The Kyiv result cost Newco a play-off round bonus and a home gate, which together would earn £5m.  That’s a lot of money for a club with dreams of one day returning home.  The season is already taking on a familiar look.

Watching the despair of the BBC Scotland panel was a joy to behold, apart from Lamont the other 5 were all ex huns. No balance in the commentary or analysis whatsoever, wiz more like Ranger TV in your house!

  2. Had to set the VPN to Scotland this morning to watch some of the BBC coverage over my morning coffee.

  3. to hear cammy bell plead for high balls on top of tha goalkeeper to “see what he is all about”, was a highlight for me.

Not sure why I randomly thought of this right now but I always find it interesting in the currency markets that when the dollar falls any currency pegged to the dollar also falls. The key thing is the peg.

Anyway, here’s hoping for a few quality additions before the window closes. Hopefully none of the targets are with clubs undergoing changes in ownership!

Celtic will receive the UCL League stage downpayment of €17.87m on 20 September.

That day, they will also receive the “75% Value Pillar” payment. That is a confusing part & I’m GUESSING that’s about €11.5m.

At current exchange rates, that’s about £25.2m.

Some of us will remember the footage of Ajax v R2ngers pre-season and Butland’s comical attempt at diving low to his left as a trundler slipped under his arm and into the net.

Last night’s first goal was almost identical to Matt’s goal at Celtic Park in last season’s run-in as Butland again dived low to his left, and missed the ball.

It is clear that the Ibrox keeper has a big weakness with shots low to his left. Other opponents must surely notice and exploit this obvious anomaly.

  9. Didn’t see their match but did listen back to the shortbread podcast coverage this morning. Derek Ferguson twice called the ref a cheat. The unprofessional conduct of some in the BBC is almost unbelievable.

Two things from last night – their home attendance for a match with at least £5 million on the line was pathetic. The bears are seemingly beginning to walk away.

Secondly, Clements is not a very good gaffer. To leave the young South American on the pitch, already on a yellow and with no European experience to draw on was just managerial incompetence despite the bad call.

  10. It’s always a source of great amusement to see rangers lose any game, but to exit the CL qualifier at the first hurdle is particularly pleasing. It guarantees us extra money without doing anything.

The arrival of Adam Idah will put our squad at the same position as last season (more or less) and so let’s hope that some of that vast cash we hold, and income we know is coming, can be used to bring in one or two genuine challengers for a first XI position.

You would need to net off the costs of staging the game at Hampden and the associated hosting costs and travel costs to get the true loss but your point is valid.
