Champions League silver lining

246

Uefa Champions League financial distribution changes significantly this season from the previous model, in line with changes to the tournament itself.  The old TV Pool no longer exists, replaced by a Value Distribution payment, which is majority based on the value of your TV market, with a factor determined by how well you have performed in the previous 10 years compared to other participants.

Celtic’s European performance over the last decade has not been great, but this year’s Champions League has so much fresh blood that we are now guaranteed to be in Pot 3.  Aston Villa, Bologna, Girona, Stade Brestois and Stuttgart have replated more familiar names from the Big Five leagues.  Our distribution will therefore be higher than it would if Chelsea, Roma and Lyon etc. qualified.

I know you would have been as upset as the TV panel at last night’s result from Hampden, but there are reasons to cheer up.  Celtic being Scotland’s only Champions League participant, instead of sharing the Value Distribution pot, is likely to earn us an extra £4m.

Also, do not underestimate the value of our Coefficient Monkeys being in the Europa League, where they consistently earn Scotland a high number of points, compared to their only venture in the Champions League, where they were the group stage’s worst ever entrant.  So every cloud….

The night was not so good for everyone in Scottish football.  The Kyiv result cost Newco a play-off round bonus and a home gate, which together would earn £5m.  That’s a lot of money for a club with dreams of one day returning home.  The season is already taking on a familiar look.

“We can fair to the Board and say Ange had signed 50 mn pounds worth of players, most of who were “players who are able to make an immediate impact and deliver footballing success.”

    So maybe rebalancing was needed.”

We also sold/lost a good few of those first team ready players so I still think each window should have a balance, depending on the outgoings as much as anything. Again though I thought some of those we signed should have been first team ready – Lager and Holm for me in particular.

That said, with a list made to suit the old manager’s specs it would be a high risk window either way. BR could, presumably, have black balled any signing last summer but he approved them afaik. Whilst I agree that managers signing players they have managed before is comforting in a way we were unlikely to be able to afford many LCFC players and going by BRs past signings – De Vries always comes to mind for me, you can see why we might want to do some due diligence even if such due diligence has produced an equally ineffective goalie and for more money too.

If BR had said last summer he wanted Idah you’d probably get a worse reaction that we got to his signing in January if ppl looked at his stats (12 goals in 100 games – 2 and 6 league goals in 25ish games in the last two championships seasons?). Not sure that compares favourably to the Danish striker that was being touted for a few windows.

Not easy this player recruitment lark!

  2. I see the Celtic Women Team are due to play Glasgow City at the ‘Albert Bartlett’ stadium in Airdrie.

Shouldn’t that be better named as the ‘Albert Tatlock’ stadium. No?

  3. With the European squad rules does anyone know if we are now needing buy homegrown talent possibly to meet our required quota?

Trophies won by players signing for other clubs following Lawwell’s derisory low ball offers.

    Schar – Zip

    Fletcher – Zilch

    McGinn – Nada

    Toney – Zero

Castagne – Square root of bugger all

Guys, I’m genuinely not at the wind up here ….. but, honestly, I think you need to get over it !

“With the European squad rules does anyone know if we are now needing buy homegrown talent possibly to meet our required quota?”

Is it a required minimum or is it optional?

e.g. 8 players out of the list of 25, or whatever the number are, can only be homegrown IF used?

Imagine we’d use youths to use any space as emergency cover whether required or optional.

Think some on here are being a bit harsh on Porteous.

Celtic are infamous for having cheap free kicks given to them when their players hit the deck after little or no contact.

We’re also, routinely, the disgraceful beneficiaries of referees looking the other way when our players lose control of a situation and make impetuous, sometimes nasty tackles … then lie down feigning injury from the contact.

I’m sure Ryan would thrive at Celtic.

  7. I hope this link works.

Fond as I am of some of the work of Martin Scorsese, I’ve often thought that the Godfather trilogy & The Irishman etc; suffers from the Gangster Porn aspect of finding high intellect and morality in the life & death decisions of the Mafia low-lifes.

For that reason, I’ve long argued that the Minions Franchise was a superior venture to the Godfather trilogy.

Thus far, I’ve convinced no one but ….. I’ve just uncovered some evidence that might swing a few to my side of the argument. All we needed was for the Minions to also adopt the Italian language and cadence.

Here, I hope is the persuasive link

Usual “curse on both your houses, one’s as bad as the other” framing of the latest ticket allocation moves.

If journalism existed in this country a single question to two clubs and a publication of responses / non-responses would clear this up in five minutes.

“Following the recent agreement to allocate approximately 5% of stadium capacity to away fans, how much money has your club spent on stadium configuration to facilitate this?”

Not bothered about another striker. I would recall Johnny Kenny or have Maeda as sub.

Not bothered about another wingers. Kuhn, Maeda, Jamesy and Palma give us plenty out there. I hope Mikey J gets a good move. Yang can go out on loan hopefully.

We’re covered at keeper and right back. New contract for Greg and an Owen Beck at left back would be lovely.

If Maik, Yuki and Lagerbielke aren’t up to it we need to move them on and bring in one more to give us the 4 between CCV, Scales and Welsh.

We are well covered in midfield. I think McCowan would be a good squad addition, otherwise it’s just a matter of replacing Matt with some of the transfer money if he’s sold.

Smaller, higher quality squad. Turn a profit. All good.

Meanwhile the huns are imploding. That Kiev team that beat them were red rotten.
