Chances of Marsch pitching up at Celtic Park?

268

We are looking for a manager, so you know the rules.  Some ex-players will try to scare you with Roy Keane, various agents will push their uninspiring clients into the spotlight in the hope a media association with Celtic will enhance their chances of getting fixed up at Swindon.  And, the occasional manager who wants more pay, will start talking about the honour of being linked with Celtic, while linking himself with Celtic.

Managers who are talking to Celtic right now are not talking to anyone in the media, you can bet Newco’s delayed vat payment on it.  I have no doubt RB Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch has been sounded out, but his “interesting” and “an honour” comments about Celtic tell you all you need to know.

Although he was speaking to BBC Sport, he was talking to his employer.  Chances of him pitching up at Celtic Park next season depend overwhelmingly on Salzburg’s Champions/Europa League draw.  Learn ‘manager speak’; silence is what to listen for.  Today’s story does not fit the profile, there will be another one along soon.

Good point. The financial advantage Celtic have enjoyed over the SPFL is greater than Salzburg’s advantage in Austria. They’ve also shown some impressive performances in Europe too.

However, it’s not just the managerial “name” that’s important. I want to be sure that we’re thinking outside the box and looking at progressive appointments.

Maresca and Marsch might divide opinion on here but it would show we’re on the right track – away from the usual tired names we see linked.

  3. I would happily give up next seasons league if thought that we would appoint the correct DOF and head coach with a plan and vision for the club

Paul putting out the Curb your Enthusiasm type vibes…not to have someone with the European pedigree (in performance terms at least as Marsch) being scouted as our next coach / manager shows the disconnect between club and fans. We crave success they crave penny pinching. The perceived lack of ambition from recent information is the stuff of nightmares – a manager out of a job or contract is their ambition?! Another few seasons of mediocrity may be coming over the hill to greet us.

  5. If we are going down the road of developing youth for the first team is that not what we have been trying to do and failing at, where do the 16s 18 21s play regularly?

We need a first team squad overhaul and first team players signed to play with us for 3 years, not prospects, guys who are sound physically and determined to achieve with us, youth development is fantasy in Scotland, they are stifled as there is no league.

Get the best first team coach support staff and a wise experienced D of F that we can afford and give the backroom medical staff a shake up as well as players are out for far too long, stress injuries becoming fractures requiring surgery, ruptured ligament injuries but he can fly 7000miles, did he have surgery or not?

Agree – a new, professional, forward-looking course is an absolute requirement. Modernise / sharpen-up from top-to-bottom. Now is the time to do it. I haven’t done the in-depth examination of the above two specifically that you would expect would be done by a big organisation like Celtic – but I like the general profile of both.

No to Clark, no to Alex Neil, no to Derek McInnes (there was a shout for him I read yesterday – ffs!!!) – blow away the cobwebs – move into a new era at Celtic.

As I mentioned, I’m genuinely hopeful about the new CEO. I think he – from what I’ve read and listened to – is a big step in the right direction.

The Harkins / Maresca links have a lot of positives for a DOF / Head Coach pairing – I’d be happy with that.

It would take at least this level of ambition to make me consider renewing.

In total agreement with you. It has almost gone too far for me. Celtic have treated the support with utter contempt this season. If they think we’ll be fobbed off with some cheapskate appointment then I’ll be finding other things to do when the footie’s on. I suspect there will be thousands more like me.

    ——

    Agreed.

No chance of Desmond appointing someone like Marsch. Such a candidate would want to rebuild entire club, and won’t put up with Operation ShortHead garbage.

    Exactly.

But ask yourself this. Has Arlene Foster said anything? No she hasn’t. So the fact she’s stayed shtum might suggest those are good odds.

    Mmmm.

  16. Its really simple this time around, if they play season ticket renewal roulette with the supporters they’ll lose. There are too many that I know who have no intention of renewing until they see how prepared we are for Europe. Maybe the board can’t or won’t see it yet, then they are in for a shock.

    Disagree

Today’s blog is a not very cryptic attempt to discourage supporters getting ahead of themselves

  18. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

I remember the times when football fans despised everything about Red Bull’s incursion into football in Austria and Germany. Marsch is a cog in a wheel, being more civil in a press briefing than any British politician has managed to the populace in a year.

These miserable ten days have made me more sure than ever that the worst consequence of broadcasters making it possible to watch sixty five live football matches in a week is there are now many fans who watch sixty five live football matches in a week. Then talk about them.

  19. Apart from Scandinavia, the Baltic states & the bottom two tiers in England, I honestly cannot envisage any manager currently in a job, quitting it to come to Scotland.

Therefore our choice will be between Steve Clarke, or, a currently unemployed manager. Chris Wilder falls into the latter category, however his stock is high in England – I expect that an ambitious Championship club will snap him up.

So, in my book, it is Steve Clarke, when he is finished with his Scotland duties, which I expect will be after three games in the Euros.

He will get the best out of whomever is left after the exodus and will bring in affordable additions.

After this season’s disaster, we will probably have a fallow period for the next couple…winning a cup, or, two, may be the limit of our abilities.

Clarke will be a safe & steady replacement after the financial ravages of Covid – much like Gordon Strachan after the high-spending Martin O’Neil era.

If Steve can be as successful as Strachan, he will be hailed as a miracle-worker. Our squad is weak & threadbare now and there will quite a few ‘off their mark’ when the starting-gun for the transfer window is fired.

  20. JHB – I think you’re selling Celtic short as an option for many. Like players who know they’re not going to be on Barcelona/Bayern/Real/PSG/Juve’s list of targets, they all want to go to the EPL – it’s a big test and the money can only really be matched by half a dozen or so clubs around Europe.

So, for someone not currently working in one of the big 5 leagues, there’s the question of profile and how to get on the radars of the EPL clubs – especially when they see the roundabout of Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Sam Allardyce, etc turn up at multiple clubs.

There’s two ways of doing it – 1) go to a Championship club and do well a la Lampard, Wagner, Farke. It hasn’t worked out for many because that’s a really tough league to shine in.

Option 2 is us and them. Come in, do a good job (especially in Europe), and you’re on the radars – especially with the added profile Rodgers and Gerrard have brought to the league. Rodgers is the template – bring them in, they do amazingly well, let them go to England and get a good level of compensation and repeat.

For foreign managers, that’s the attraction – win something, play CL (or EL minimum), move to the big money league down south. There are few clubs outside England and the big leagues who could pay better than us and offer that boost to a manager’s profile. It may be what’s on Marsh’ mind – go rebuild Celtic and the EPL (which is big in the US) beckons before going home to take the national team job.

  21. Did anyone read Pauls article? Celtic have to operate below the radar as the MSM are hostile to the club. They are not our friends. Its well known that certain journalists took English Club managers to the houses of Celtic players to enable them to chat transfers behind the clubs back. This was true with Terry Neil taken by a certain Daily Record journalist to Charlie Nicholas house.

It is better to keep these matters under cover as we dont have a new manager until he has signed a contract. We should operate in this manner as it is in the clubs best interests. I am sure Leicester were in discussions with Rodgers well in advance of the club knowing.

We currently have a CEO and a Caretaker Manager who will operate until thy are replaced in the close season

  22. BigBhoy

What you say may be true about our media but it also allows the club to treat our fans with contempt. Their communication with the support over a whole range of issues is abysmal.

  23. SPIDEY101 on 17TH MARCH 2021 2:50 PM

Some good points but let’s not forget that Rodgers and Gerrard were already on the EPL’s radar due to them having already managed or played there. A foreign manager coming in and doing well at Celtic won’t guarantee a top job in England – Deila or Lennon didn’t exactly leave for bigger things. Even Strachan had to go back to the Championship.

For someone like Marsch, he’s done his “time” in a smaller league and won all there is to win. He’s built up a reputation to a level where clubs from the big five leagues will be looking at him – big clubs. There’s no way he’d go down a few rungs of the ladder and come to the SPFL at this stage of his career. It’d be like Rodgers doing well with us then going to say, Belgium or Denmark.

  24. Marsch is looking for a pay rise and letting his employers know that he can go if the amount is not high enough, nothing else. He is NOT outwith our reach, he just won’t be coming. Also, why are we speaking to a couch Paul67 :))) PL is not anywhere near these appointments as this is DD and his advisors domain. He’ll probably hire the DoF and then let him announce the manager, por cierto
