Chances of Marsch pitching up at Celtic Park?

268

We are looking for a manager, so you know the rules.  Some ex-players will try to scare you with Roy Keane, various agents will push their uninspiring clients into the spotlight in the hope a media association with Celtic will enhance their chances of getting fixed up at Swindon.  And, the occasional manager who wants more pay, will start talking about the honour of being linked with Celtic, while linking himself with Celtic.

Managers who are talking to Celtic right now are not talking to anyone in the media, you can bet Newco’s delayed vat payment on it.  I have no doubt RB Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch has been sounded out, but his “interesting” and “an honour” comments about Celtic tell you all you need to know.

Although he was speaking to BBC Sport, he was talking to his employer.  Chances of him pitching up at Celtic Park next season depend overwhelmingly on Salzburg’s Champions/Europa League draw.  Learn ‘manager speak’; silence is what to listen for.  Today’s story does not fit the profile, there will be another one along soon.

Covid rates just released within the hour, Glesga now tops the table, well done the Huns😈😈

    —————

    Genuine question.

    Why would they care?

Sevco has proven to be immune from Covid-19.

Negative tests aplenty from the lab in Norn Iron (they alone use) prove it.

Rumours that a staunch lab director and technician ….

….. take all Sevco samples and

    ….. replace them

….. with swabs run under tap water for two seconds before testing ….

    …. are unconfirmed

  6. SFTB – good post. I don’t think many think we’ll go get Pep or Klopp or anyone like that, and we all accept the days of poaching O’Neill from Leicester are gone. But we can’t limit ourselves in the way we have in the past as you demonstrate.

There’s plenty of good coaches out there who aren’t yet on the radar of big clubs in Germany or England that we could realistically attract. Yes they will move in eventually but that’s why we need to sort the rest of the club out, so we’re ready when the time comes and it doesn’t cause so much upheaval – like with Salzburg who went from Rose to Marsh or Leipzig who went Ragnick – Hassenhuttel – Ragnick – Nagelsmann without a flicker: the system and the team kept going.

  7. For years .

Celtics business model has been to try and find young players who are under the radar of clubs from the big European leagues.

Sign them when they are not yet mature enough for the teams in the bigger leagues.

Let them mature and try and then sell them to the teams from the bigger leagues .

We are a nursery club .

We will not attract a manager of proven quality from any of the big leagues , unless they have an affinity with us .

There are not many of those about .

So what is the profile ?

A manager / coach with knowledge of leagues where we can pick up young players on the cheap.

The days of poaching MON are gone?

When we poached MON from Leicester, we were allegedly, far down the road of poaching Guus Hiddink.from Sevilla.

Alleged Downsizing or premature allegations of alleged downsizing are not allowed, we will not shrink to fit inferior profiles, beware the ides of Marsch, and we will not expect added value to our ST, without added value to the ST. – Mon the B Team.

I agree with your sentiment and yes, we should be looking at bright, young managerial prospects, who – like playing prospects, will eventually use us as a stepping stone.

My point was specifically about Marsch who has already used his own stepping stone and will move to a big (Bundesliga?) league in the summer. We missed the boat with him.

That’s why I’m keen on Maresca. People will ask “what has he won?” and “he’s never managed a big club” but that’s the point – we need to get in there before he does, otherwise we’ll be too late.

If not him specifically, then this kind of appointment.

  14. Bournesouprecipe – I think the days of poaching from the EPL are gone simply because of spending power among those clubs – we spend £10-12m per season and EPL clubs largely see that as a bargain price for a single player.

  17. If I heard correctly, the Scottish Government will announce on Friday whether or not the Glasgow derby will go ahead on Sunday.

Why Friday? Do the Huns have an important game on Thursday? Would the result of that game influence the thinking of the Government?

  20. For me,if we want someone a step up,with a realistic chance of him coming,it would be Maresca.First solo gig with a big name.

  21. GEEBEE1978

Absolutely agree with you. The thought of more of the same old, same old ex-Celt and/or Irish fills me with dread- apart from Shaun Maloney as someone pointed out earlier and especially if he comes together with Martinez. We are still capable of attracting quality managers if we pay the money. If we don’t ask them they won’t come. Paul 67 did this about a month back when there was a high demand for Eddie Howe, “Anyone who is unemployed at this time won’t be considered” or words to that effect. That effectively ruled out Howe and Rafa “unrealistic” in the case of the latter but he was also unemployed. So get yourselves ready everyone, Keane (screeeeeam), Ross or Neil. As for Celtic’s Board, get ready to enclose the entire upper tier of the stadium.

  22. HOT SMOKED on 17TH MARCH 2021 7:21 PM

He certainly did but Willie Maley and Jimmy McGrory in relation to appointing a new Celtic manager in 2021. Were they thrown in just to ensure the post was a long one?

  23. GeeBee – I think we’re basically on the same page – we think it’s too late to get Marsch but that’s the profile we should be after. I’d be happy enough with Maresca though would be happier if he’d had a managers job elsewhere first or one of the players he had coached was top drawer.

I think someone else mentioned Ronnie’s problem in getting buy in was that he’d never managed a player as good as he had at Celtic, so laying down the law is hard. Rodgers on the other hand could say “look I turned Suarez from a racist idiot into the best number 9 in the world; Sterling from a raw kid to a £50m move to City; and Sturidge from a Chelsea reserve to an England international” so buy in is much easier – what he did was good enough for proper world class players so our guys had no grounds to object. Maresca probably faces the same issue as Ronnie if it’s him.

That said, if it’s the City connection we’ll be a much more professionally run club – even if Harkin poaches all the Department number 2s or 3s that would set the foundations I want to see set.

  24. THEORIGINALSADIESBHOY on 17TH MARCH 2021 7:38 PM

Howe’s been unemployed for a long time now and surely if he was coming, he’d be here by now.

If we’re interested, we need to ask the question then move on – I personally think he’s holding out for an EPL club. Palace or Southampton would fit the profile of being close to the south coast too, which is supposedly what he’s after.
