Channel 4 look into historic abuse

299

Alex Thompson of Channel 4 News has been in Scotland working on a piece about historic child abuse this week.  This morning he Tweeted a photo of Celtic Park, adding the words, “Watch this space”.

While these matters happened decades ago, Celtic are still Celtic, and have a corporate responsibility for all that went before.  Fergus McCann first acknowledged what took place.  He setup counselling facilities and instructed an independent investigation into the actions of the club under the old board.  This happened 25 years ago.

There is no statute of limitation on victims coming forward.  Some only want to tell their story, to be heard and be assured that processes are different now.  Others seek financial compensation.  I don’t think there is a lot of money involved, certainly not for Celtic, who have insurance.

What happened was terrible, affected countless boys and went on for perhaps 20 years.  The club must act appropriately and responsibly.  The matter does not lend itself to dialogue on social media, or a running commentary through other media.  There is a process underway, I have no idea how long it will take, or if everyone will be satisfied with the outcome.

Historic child abuse is handled so flippantly by others it has become a football itself.  Much comment is sensationalist, “Watch this space”, is not a promising start.  This subject does not benefit from a drumroll introduction.

The subject is also most commonly reported about one club – Celtic – to the exclusion of all others.  It should be reported and those responsible held to account, but balance your reporting.  There are three Glasgow clubs under review for this matter right now, as well as the SFA.  Coverage mostly concentrates on the one that was first to react and offer help.

  1. I’d imagine their desire for a quick reschedule for today’s game is down to their fear of a fixture pile up and going 13 points behind us for any length of time – games in hand or not.

That said their finances may well be perilous right now. Still no derait of how the ten million funding gap will be bridged.

I assume that figure did not take into account monies withheld by Elite so it’s probably closer to a 13 million black hole at this stage.

Can you imagine the noise in our forums and the media coverage in Scotland if we had released accounts in September announcing a funding gap to see out the season and come February we still had nothing in place ?

Yet in Sevco land they ignore this. They deserve everything that comes their way.

  2. HOT SMOKED

Good question, allegedly ……………….52,000 season ticket holders.

I’d imagine their haste to have a game is a combination of being sh*t scared of a potential 13 point

gap, lost match day revenue (Pies & Programmes) and the added bonus opportunity to have pay at the gate.

Not to mention the sheer contempt in which they hold their supporters who are inconvenienced.

Can you imagine PC Plod’s reaction to a one day postponement if it were Celtic? in essence were it Celtic

there would be no game next day.

  3. How can an unplayable waterlogged pitch become playable 24 hrs later when it’s gonna rain for next 24 hours?? Smell Shite…..

  4. Loads of more learned people have posted on here.

The abuse stuff is here and everyone need to deal with it .

Victims have to be treated properly by any proper enquiry which will deal with everyone who has a case.

    I hope..

  5. From the BBC site, I know, sorry, but……..

Q: One emotionally very, very divisive issue, which to this day divides Scottish football, and that is are Rangers a new club? What’s your view?

    CW: Yes, obviously they are.

    CW getting it right again!

He got it right previously as we all know when he valued the now dead club at a whole £1.

  6. Just back from Vale – great result and performance – kept the ball an the ground and passed it , dare I say, the Glasgow Celtic way

nice to see Glasgow finest giving up their family time to allow a game to go ahead at such short notice.

Do you think we would have been accommodated similarly?

  8. Silver City 1888 on

With regards to Ibrox, I seem to recall that in order to shoehorn as many fans into it as possible they lowered the playing surface. Since then they have seemed to suffer a greater number of cancelled games.

  9. Some Huns saying their pitch is diseased.

    Makes sense.

  10. keep your friends close and your enemies even closer…..

“In the last few weeks I’ve gone through several emotions about the team I love: frustrated, disbelieving, raging, embarrassed….and by yesterday I’d pretty much settled on disillusioned (mixed with the usual biting animosity I tend to feel towards all things scum-related when the fuckers start to gloat).

I woke up this morning determined to adopt a positive attitude because, frankly, that’s what I expect of our players and that’s what is necessary if they are going to achieve anything this season or next. If I write them all off as bottle-merchants (exactly what I’d done) then I’m effectively telling myself we’re back to ground zero, no better off than when Ally went off to tend bushes and Pedro planted himself in the middle of one to argue with fans.

And how could that be? How could we be on par with the scum – outclassing them in two games in succession including a comfortable victory at the piggery – and then a mere six weeks later be miles behind them in every department with no prospect of stopping 15 in a row, let alone 10?

You’re right, it makes no fucking sense at all. And it’s exactly what the unwashed WANT us to believe.

The present celtic team is ordinary with a couple of special players. Nothing we can’t handle as we have emphatically proven. And their manager is a bitter, mentally unstable, man-child.

What I fully expected to happen after the piggery was for us to kick on and for them:

    1. to drop a few points

    2. scum fans start moaning

    3. Lemon gets rattled, rants, implodes, leaves

    4. We get 55

So, dubious refereeing aside, I honestly have NO F****G IDEA why a group of players who fought like lions both in Europe and against our bitterest rivals have suddenly come back from their holidays a shadow of their former selves. I mean, seriously – wtf?

But we do by and large have the necessary quality in this current team. Only a few weeks ago we were revelling in the skills of Ryan Jack, Davis, Kent, Morelos and the ever reliable McGregor. And we still have them. We know the frailties of Tav, Goldson, Katic etc but they also bring positives. And as I said already, that celtic team is simply ordinary.

For me, our overall skill-level is good enough. But we are lacking two things:

    1. A winning mentality (which I honestly thought we were getting!)

    2. A formula for winning ugly against inferior opposition

Gerrard simply HAS to rediscover what made our team gel and fire on all cylinders before the last break. What did we have in the team that enabled them to walk out to a 99% hostile crowd at the scum-dome and cruise to victory?

And he has to wise up and understand that in Scotland football isn’t rocket science. All the teams outside the old firm play a very calculated brand of negative football that involves building a wall that Roger f****g Waters would be proud of.

Week-in, week-out that f****g wall needs to get smashed. It doesn’t have to be pretty, it just needs to get done and 3pts taken. Gerrard has to start mixing it up, bringing on subs much earlier, confusing the hammer throwers with his tactics.

So today I feel a bit more positive. We’ve f****d this league but we still have a chance at the cup and, if we can just strengthen mentally and tactically, we can get 55 next season. I honestly believe that”

apologies in advance if thats offended anybody.

  11. OMG Caroline Flack has been found dead at her flat. She was only 40.

I know it’s not Celtic related but it maybe shows the power the media have.

  12. I’ve made my views clear before on the historic Child Abuse in Scottish football and, notably, at Celtic BC.

Therefore, I can only welcome an investigation by a respected journalist, like Alex Thompson, into the matter.

Our club may have made behind-the-scenes to deal with this matter but their PR and media pronouncements on our intentions and approach, have been non-existant. We will always carry the look of having been forced to do something about the issue as we have never actually publicised what we have been doing or should be doing.

This is a seperate matter from our football business but we have been ignoring it for so long as we have done no or little work on the matter, and we have said even less about it than anything we have done.

This issue will not go quietly away

  13. There is a great deal of effort going into the narrative that celtic fc should just accept guilt and give money over to victims of celtic bsc coaches. That step may result in the BAD headlines going away but the plc cant make a decision to do that because of public opinion.

Most sevco fans online think child abuse is weapon to beat celtic with and live in a world were they think any componsation bill will not be covered by insurance or will cripple celtic, but that is simply wishful thinking on their part and shows the real motivates.

If you bring up neilly or Dunn they deflect. That is not the action of people with real concern that is self preservation, circling the wagon, protecting their club etc. That is the stuff they actually say celtic fc done.

Double standards is not needed or helpful.

  14. Greenpinta- a real shame at a young age, but these types court media attention for work, tou can’t have it both ways IMO may she RIP

  19. Collusion.

I’d imagine a high degree….and Level of collusion. and orchestration involved in wrongly attributing responsibility to one party.

    Aye.

  20. This definite attribution of “responsibility”………….. while ignoring legal definitives is odd………

    Hmmmmm.

I remember the reports about the assault charge. It sounded pretty serious. Was she not battering her boyfriend about the head with some sort of implement while he was asleep? I think an ex was quoted as saying he wasn’t surprised about her being charged. Sounded like she had ‘issues.’ I can understand why the case wasn’t dropped.

  22. Greenpinata. Thanks mate,I don’t have a telly so those programmes you mention I have never seem.sad occurrence for the young lady may she rest in peace.suicide is at epidemic proportions with our young sadly

  25. The huns have a system where if

you are a season ticket holder and not going to the game you let the club know. They then sell the seat on , the season ticket holder gets half the money. But here’s the con, it comes off next seasons ticket . So money is in their account.
