Channel 4 look into historic abuse

299

Alex Thompson of Channel 4 News has been in Scotland working on a piece about historic child abuse this week.  This morning he Tweeted a photo of Celtic Park, adding the words, “Watch this space”.

While these matters happened decades ago, Celtic are still Celtic, and have a corporate responsibility for all that went before.  Fergus McCann first acknowledged what took place.  He setup counselling facilities and instructed an independent investigation into the actions of the club under the old board.  This happened 25 years ago.

There is no statute of limitation on victims coming forward.  Some only want to tell their story, to be heard and be assured that processes are different now.  Others seek financial compensation.  I don’t think there is a lot of money involved, certainly not for Celtic, who have insurance.

What happened was terrible, affected countless boys and went on for perhaps 20 years.  The club must act appropriately and responsibly.  The matter does not lend itself to dialogue on social media, or a running commentary through other media.  There is a process underway, I have no idea how long it will take, or if everyone will be satisfied with the outcome.

Historic child abuse is handled so flippantly by others it has become a football itself.  Much comment is sensationalist, “Watch this space”, is not a promising start.  This subject does not benefit from a drumroll introduction.

The subject is also most commonly reported about one club – Celtic – to the exclusion of all others.  It should be reported and those responsible held to account, but balance your reporting.  There are three Glasgow clubs under review for this matter right now, as well as the SFA.  Coverage mostly concentrates on the one that was first to react and offer help.

My friend, I firmly believe in press freedom. State controlled or manipulated press is the ultimate nightmare.

I believe in a free press too

I believe and agree with you a state controlled(public ownership) media would be a nightmare.

I believe we have a privately owned media who do manipulate truth for their own end and profits.leading to such nightmares for society as a whole,I.e as in what is real or fake news, that is playing out in front of us.

Got a feeling of 3-0 tomorrow but I will take a squaffed 1-0 89th min winner.

  3. I talking to my matr about der hun after the Kilmarnock game midweek and he made some great points – he generally does.

I’ve been trying to get him to sign up for a few weeks and even started the set up process for him after our chat.

But since he’s not bothered I’ll post his comments for the night shift.

To give context I was saying that I can’t see Gerrard hanging around for another season after this one…

    ****

Mate I made the point last night

It’s unfair expectation that’s killing him

Let’s look at this without emotion.

He came to a rangers team in massive turmoil. Players were miles off it. A lot of money spent. Wasted in fact.

Celtic has won, what 6 in a row. Money in the bank. Young players breaking through. Established players all over. Solid.

We also outspend then overall by 2/3 times.

To think ANYONE could turn that around in 2 seasons is incredible. I said it before he came – it’s almost impossible.

But what happened is we went into a bit of funk – recruitment wasn’t great, good players left, Rodgers left, Lennon came in – and the feeling was just low, rightly or wrongly.

At the same time, they hit a bit of form. Recruitment was good. Players playing above themselves. They kept a hold of key players.

So although form remained similar, the vibe was more positive at rangers.

But; it’s a cliche I know – but class is permanent, form is temporary. And that’s literally all that’s happened here.

The expectations, born from their inability to accept playing second fiddle to catholics (let’s be honest, that’s what it is) has meant they have demanded something almost impossible. And now they are holding people account to those standards.

Gerard has done a very decent job imo. They are considerably better than when he started. They have a better playing squad. They have players (not many, but better than none) that other teams actually want. They have came 2nd (which was an improvement). They have beat us home and away, which they hasn’t done in a long time. They have got to finals, which they hadn’t done. They have done well in Europe, which they hadn’t done.

Also – it’s 10 points in it! With a game in hand and 2 old firms! So your talking literally 1 point of with their control.

And this is where Gerard has massively shown his immaturity and inexperience – and also a fascinating insight into why he has never won a league before.

    It’s 1 fkng point!!!!!!!

He’s the worlds best cup player. All or nothing player, and showing he’s same as a gaffer. No sense of context, no sense of perspective.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but as I said above – the important context is that we simpler better than them in every single way. If we lose to them, it’s because they have performed to their maximum and we have massively underperformed (ie think Leicester winning the league – that didn’t make them “the best” team, which is why it was SO special).

But as I said, they – and him – have allowed themselves to be caught up massively in their “rivalry”.

It should always have been a 3/4/5year plan.

Instead, they are at a real risk of a complete meltdown – it’s the refs, it’s the sfa, it’s the Celtic media machine, it’s racist Scotland, it’s the media – all of which is 100% bullshit at 100% counter productive. It’s throwing the baby out with the bath water stuff.

The reality is – they just aren’t there yet.

    And long may it continue.

    ****

I’ll obviously let him know I’ve posted it and if it stirs any discussion it might bring him on

  7. How is Jim Traynor after his ‘attack’?

Will the SMSM report it as ‘he brings it on himself’…like he did with Neil? No?

I have zero sympathy for the man.

He has done more damage to the image of Scottish football (especially Celtic) with his racist claims. All in the pursuit of a wage.

His influence within BBC – and wider media – is worrying but he knows they are only too willing to comply as what he is promoting adheres to their own bigoted beliefs.

However, I’m more worried that an organisation like Sky allowed themselves to be used to promote anti-Celtic diatribe in the Morelos interview. They must have known that it would be forensically examined, given it’s accusation and meaning,

If Ofcom don’t deliver a satisfactory outcome then Celtic MUST go legal. Heads have to roll. It’s Traynors biggest mistake to date and the ‘attack’ is deflection. IMO.

Ad-hoc pitch inspection for todays game……if it was being played in my front garden, the game would definitely go ahead – but I’d need to let the 🐏 Onto it first, otherwise it’d be like Tynecastle under Craig Levein.

No furhter rain forecast here today, but it will be breezy.

Safe travels to all heading here for the game. The wind will be at your backs in the South Stand so sing out loud for the Bhoys, just like you always do.

Any result which sees us 13 points clear of the huns before they kick-off today will do just fine. 🍀

Think it was later than 1971 that the Renfrew ferry stopped running.

    D. :)

Definitely later, I remember my clutch going on it and struggling to get off, must have been late 70’s early 80’s

    …………………..

I remember going on the Renfrew Ferry several times in the late 1960’s with my older cousin who lived in Yoker.

It cost 2d ( each way) for us kids, as I think i was on it when I was between the ages of 12-14. My cousin was around 16/17, and I think he also only paid 2d…so maybe that was the standard fare ?

2d in Old money was about 1 Pence in Todays money.

  12. After 25 years of hearing these child abuse accusations against my beloved club,I’m still unclear of exactly the extent of what the club and it’s officials knew, and what exactly they are being accused off.

I once read that Celtic had insisted that Frank Cairney be sacked, but sometime later had reinstated him ,knowing what he had done.

I found this very difficult to believe.

Whilst this story goes without proper open ,independent, investigative scrutiny.

Our enemies will use it to make up spurious or otherwise stories ,that will be used to tarnish the name of our great club ,and even us as ordinary supporters.

I want to heart of the truth of the matter.

All clubs accused of such horrible crimes should be investigated in such a manner.

All victims ,no matter where they suffered deserve the truth to be told.

Compensation where it is due ,should be paid without hesitation.

Rangers would probably escape having to pay this ,as it is another example of when they will play the “ we are not responsible for the old club card”.Yet then claim that they are the same club.

The victims deserve emotional support, counselling, and financial compensation .

The guilty subjects need to exorcise these demons and make no attempt at a cover up.

    Shame on anyone who does.

    The truth will out.

First off how is your health.? I was born in YORKHILL and grew up with GOVAN FERRY talk.I always wondered what the folk in G called it.

  22. Nonsense being a denizen of Renfrew it was always the Renfrew Ferry.

My most perilous trip on The Renfrew Ferry was on 8th September 1971 (I had to check the official CFC fixture list for the exact date). We played Clydebank in the league cup and won 5-0. A group of us, young Bhoys all from Renfrew headed back home from the game and got off the bus at Yoker. We decided to run down to get the ferry before it left. Cue a gang of local thugs chasing us down to the Ferry just as it pulled away. I clearly remember a hail of bottles and large stones raining down on us and almost slipping down the greasy slipway into the Clyde a few inches away.

Eventually the ferry arrived and we managed to escape relatively unscathed.

In later years 1990’s there was a pub called the Wharf on the Yoker side that I used to frequent, even had my staff Christmas bash there one year, which was owned by a Mega-Tim called Bert.

  23. PÓGMATHONYAHUN AKA LAIRD OF THE SMILES on 16TH FEBRUARY 2020 9:09 AM

Nonsense being a denizen of Renfrew it was always the Renfrew Ferry.

    ……………………

I am NOT disputing that some folk especially those who came from Renfrew and/or that side of the water called it the Renfrew Ferry.

My experience with my family and others who lived in Partick and Yoker, was that it was called the Yoker Ferry for the very reason that folk like us would get on board on the Yoker side.

However, as I alluded to earlier, IF I was getting a bus/train to Helensburgh or Edinburgh etc…I would say that I getting on a Helensburgh and/or Edinburgh bus/train despite boarding said bus/train in Glasgow ?

My health isnt good. Thank you for asking.

I attended the Jubilee hospital in January and I believed that I was getting “Stents” for my heart ?

I was allowed home, with the Docs telling me that “Stents” would NOT solve the situation etc, as there were/are other issues going on with my heart, so.

I was advised by the same docs and those in the Royal Infirmary, that I would have a By Pass…( triple ?).

So for a couple of months I was convinced that I would get surgery and be a “New” man…However, the Docs have now advised me that “It is too Risky for a By Pass surgery, as there are other issues” ?

Ive to go back to the Jubilee in Clydebank next Monday for further chats, but I think that I will never be a “New” man…as it looks like I may have to settle for certain medication due to the risks of surgery ?

Again, thank you for asking about my health…I hope everything is fine with you ?
