  1. Charlie,

Imo, Bobby Murdoch is the best all round football player to grace a Celtic jersey. The only area, again imo, that he bested your good self was in his tackling. Passing and shooting you were his equal.

    a. I said it the first time I saw him at Murrayfield and he stood about and did nothing. I have been critical since then. I think that the job was way too big for him. I don’t think he realised what he was going into. It is all very well thinking you are going to a big club. But Celtic are bigger than that and we are expected to play a certain way. Indeed we need more than one or two goals for other reasons. The crowd want it, it is the way we play and need to play.

We need good defenders and van Dijk was certainly a player. He was a great signing for the club. Eric looks a good addition though.

    b. Lennoxtown is a fantastic training ground, I have been there quite a few times. Great facilities and so on so players should be coming through. Kieran Tierney is a start. Celtic are miles ahead of every other club in Scotland and that is why so many make it elsewhere. But the demands at Celtic are unique. It is very difficult to break into a Celtic first team.

    c. I wouldn’t say cheating, no. I would say they are involved in anti-Celtic bias and we all know who they are. It was the same when I was playing and that’s why Celtic have always had to play attacking football. We always needed to be two goals ahead at least all the time. Other just needed a one goal lead.

I remember as a young boy before going to Celtic. I’d go to mass on a Sunday in the Gorbals and one of the parishioners was a Scottish referee. His name was Fitzpatrick. He was one of the only Celtic supporting referees at that time. He would tell us about all the bias against Celtic by the rest of the referees.

Brilliant question – best of the night. I cannot understand why a professional football player at Celtic (and I am only talking about Celtic because I am not interested in anyone else), cannot take a decent corner kick.

It’s either too long or not long enough and hits the first defender. Surely they must practice every day? We would do a half hour to an hour every day. I’d take them for Billy to run in to header them. So many of our goals were well practiced.

What are they doing these days?

    Hi Charlie

Did you spend much time practicing your crossing and long passing out with normal training?

You and Stevie Chalmers were my two favourite players as a youngster as my da always pointed you both out as 100 per cent players. I remember being at a league cup semi when you played for Dumbarton and you gave Celtic a very hard time and my da applauding you all through the game.

Strangely enough, I got your autograph at a supporters do in st mungo halls and on the next page in my book is Bridie Gallagher, who sang at the do.

    Good Evening CQN

Nice wee bank holiday weekend nearing an end.

Started off with a charity race night on Friday for Mrs SMB and also Deccyrollercoaster birthday.

Had a great night at CP with the “Heroes of 86” last night, as we relived the memories of 30 years ago. Good to catch up with a few CQNers and have Mrs CRC along as well to get me home safely

    Nice wee family meal today.

Not going to help me on the final weeks of Fatbhoys Slim at all!

Thanks for buying the book, I think you will enjoy it. I have tried to be very honest. When John Fallon brought his book out I was encouraged to work on mine and I worked with David Potter and Pat Woods. CQN have been a great help in getting the book out. I just saw it for the first time tonight and I am absolutely delighted with the way it looks.

Tommy Gemmell and Big Yogi were with me at the Stirling supporters dinner and and both of them spoke very fondly of Celtic Quick News.

Totally agree Totti is an absolute legend ! I wore my Roma/Totti shirt in the Eternal City last year and i was getting free beers in bars !!

You played the first Celtic match I ever did see (down at Ayr), in a team which included one Willie Fernie. Obviously you were at the start of your career and Willie nearer the end of his, but what was it like to play alongside him?

Some goal eh? Kilmarnock were a right good team in those days and gave a few heavy beatings. Some Lions suffered down there and if the supporters weren’t so patient they maybe things would have not been so good as they turned out. Young players need supporting.

I can’t complain about the Celtic support. They are showing they are Celtic supporters. They are showing they care. That is down to one man, the manager. Ronny was given a lot of chances by the supporters and so will the next guy. Hopefully he won’t need them!

Unlike EuroChamps67……… I’m way too young to have

seen you in the flesh, but my big brother says you were a class act, left foot or right.

Do you think there is a dearth of two footed players in the modern game?

  15. Hi Charlie

One of my major gripes with the current batch of players and modern day football is the lack of accessabilty to the players for the fans.

Back in your day up to the late 90’s players would attend supporters functions and actually enjoy the occasions. Only one or two players of late have shown this same willingness. Pretty much now-a-days it’s in and out as quickly as possible.

Do you think this is reasonable and is pretty much the way of the modern footballer or should the club be more pro-active in, forcing is probably the wrong word, maybe managing players expectations on signing that they have a responsibility to attend these occasions? Hard to force them to enjoy them right enough I suppose!

Do you believe the new social media forums are a hinder renew to this with auto real time uploads to twitter, Facebook etc?

No I am not. I think I have proved that.

I wouldn’t have played for them, even if asked. I wouldn’t have been asked and that was nothing to do with football. I’m not worried about that though.

Also I wonder how the Catholics who did sign would have felt playing there.

Rangers players were just guys like us trying to make a living. It was not the players, it was the club. Departed but not missed.

  18. Talk about turning the clock back, with Lennon back at Celtic, not for me,couldn’t turn it around at Bolton, lucky he got the job after the Ross County, debacle, also stokes pulled him out a hole at Kilmarnock, nope you have been with us,,and you left,I hope its Rodgers,or the Watford manager,no ex Celtic players in charge at Celtic, the wee guy at Sheffield Wednesday is decent?

    From earlier

Ranting that a CEO of a £50 million turnover company can’t earn £500,000 salary with £500,000 bonus but happily wanting the same £50 million company to pay about 11 other employees over £1million salary just doesnt make sense to me.

MON God bless him, left us with 57, 000 season tickets holders ? So we were on the slide back then..John Barnes left us with 59, 000 season ticket holders.
