Chase is on from St Johnstone, data driven policy

189

Admit it, you smiled when you heard “St Johnstone are now the second most successful Scottish football club over the last decade” on the news last night.  The most trophy-laden period any single club has enjoyed in Scottish football history is over.  It saw Celtic win their fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh domestic treble.

Due to the peculiarities of 2020, we knew the run would end when Ross County eliminated us from the 2020-21 League Cup competition St Johnstone won yesterday, three weeks before facing Hearts in the 2019-20 Scottish Cup Final and winning our 12th successive Scottish trophy.  If you live for another 100 years, you are very unlikely to enjoy (or endure) watching any club match this record.

We deserved every one of those 12 trophies, just as we deserved to drop out of the League Cup and League challenge early this season, the latter could officially be over within six days.  The Scottish Cup is our only hope of silverware this season, although there is every chance the latter stages may be postponed until after the summer.

John Kennedy’s win in his first game in charge together with Motherwell’s win at Easter Road killed off any chance in-form Hibs had of catching Celtic in second place.

“Policy is being driven by the data”, a recurring theme you are being told by politicians and public health officials.  Hmmmm.  We are now in a situation when politicians, backed up by our National Clinical Director, tell this disease was eliminated in Scotland in the summer.  To back his political sponsor, Professor Jason Leitch claimed there was no deaths for an entire month (there were 24, a remarkably low figure considering where we were before and have been after).

At that time (different from now), Celtic ran consultations with fans about safely returning to stadiums.  The club invested in temperature scanning equipment and distances processes to no avail.  It seems the data was not driving policy.  It remains to be seen what data drove the crackdown on Celtic that saw 13 players side-lined in January.

St Mary’s in Calton, the church where Celtic were born, are taking the Government to court on the very issue (you can support their case here).  Like Celtic in the summer, churches are curious about the data informing the decision to close churches in Scotland while they remain open in England and Wales.

  1. In the autumn of 1967 I was transferred tae Kirkton Avenue tae work on the flats. Typical of the building sites back then it was littered with Tims and I don’t mean just the navvies who incidentally all seemed tae be called Sweeney or Swanney as they pronounced it.

However, there was usually the token bluenose and one of those was a labourer, John, fae the Good and the Bad, not just your usual bluenose but also an accordion player with a tangerine bond.

As the great Bo Diddley once said “you can’t judge a book by its cover” and likewise with John who was well aware of who and what I was but always looked out for this young lhad fae down in the Bonnie Banks.

One wet day as we were sitting in the trailer he told the squad how he had started out as a cobbler, he lived close tae the local Junior team and one day his door went, it was a club official and some of the players were having problems with their boots, would he have a look at them.

After he fixed them they asked if he would like tae help out in other areas. Irrespective of the colours and obvious Celtic links they were still his local team so agreed.

The trainer with the Candy at the time was Bob Rooney and John developed a close relationship with him and widnae hear a bad word about him.

Told me that all the expensive electronic equipment at Parkheid was Bob’s own not that Celtic widnae upgrade it just that Bob had developed it.

At the time the Brogans were there as was a young Benny Rooney, he said that the most technically gifted player was Frank, he did score our 5,000th goal, but was very faint hearted. Jim on the other hand was as tough as nails.

Jim would often tell him when he got tae Parkheid he would sort out the deidco hammer throwers out especially their greatest living thug, think the quiet assassin beat him tae that.

Now this was 1967, Jim was still a reserve but by the time he did replace Luggy I was well aware of him.

Benny he admitted was a good player but lacked the drive of the Brogans, so by the time I was working with John he was now a converted centre half up at Muirton having failed tae make the breakthrough at both Parkheid and Tannadice where he had went tae on a free fae us, and this was probably his level.

For some reason Bob had a fall out up st Provanmill and moved tae Cambuslang as did Benny, wisnae there long before both joined us along with IMHO one of our greatest ever players, Bobby Murdoch.

I had an uncle that went tae a lot of reserve games and said that Benny took a lot of abuse fae the Jungle along the lines of “your only here because of your father” etc, mibbees HJ can expand on this.

It seems this was the reason that Kevin Gallagher opted for Tannadice rather than Parkheid. Could also be a deterrent for young Shaun Rooney.

BTW John also had a close boyhood friend who was legendary in Glasgow, he had a house called after a ranch in a well known cowboy tv series at the time. Regaled us with a few stories about him, crucifixion comes tae mind.

    From the supersoaraway…..

“Ex-Celtic star Maloney, who currently assists Martinez in taking charge of Belgium, thinks the club should make an appointment quickly.

However, he couldn’t be drawn on the prospect of them taking over at Parkhead.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sportscene highlights show, he said: “It’s an impossible question for me to answer.”

    ________________________________________________________________-

Not a straightforward NO then, somethings up…..

  3. Rock Tree Bhoy on

    here’s the rest of it…

“I have to show respect to the federation that have put massive faith in me.

“From a sporting point of view, I really hope that Celtic, whatever decision they make, they make it quickly.

“These decisions have to be made.

“They can definitely fight for the title again next year and the big thing they need to do, they have to get that connection with the supporters.

“If that’s not there then they’re not going to be able to fight.”

  6. There is no doubt that the SNP cult treated Celtic differently than our Ibrox challengers. Why no outcry on Celtic social media sites?

The reason is that they are polluted by deluded Celtic-minded SNP turkeys. Turkeys voting for a Christmas where we all get stuffed, unemployment soars, industry & the financial sector moves south where 95% of the customers are based.

Our Catholic schools will be phased out and our culture & lifestyle marginalised.

There are none so blind as those who will not see. The SNP have no interest in our ‘kind’, never have had. SNP were in partnership with the Church of Scotland in the 1930’s & 1940’s in framing a Irish Go Home policy – the Church has since apologised, the SNP never have.

The SNP only want the Tim/Irish/Catholic vote – if independence ever transpired they would turn their back on us. They will be even more corrupt than they are now…..if that is possible.

  7. Weebobbycollins on

JHB…How do you know all this? I’m really impressed. I’m now considering not voting SNP because of what you say. Wow! Imagine phasing out Catholic schools. Shame on them! I’m going to vote Tory now. That’ll teach them!

  8. Weebobbycollins on

Then again, perhaps I’ll vote for the Greens because I’m vegetarian and I’m told the SNP are all meat eaters and carnivores as well…

As a very young bar man in my faither’s pub, yer man asked me for a round of drinks at twenty tae three – pubs closed at 2:30 in those days. I refused him, saying the bar is closed and would he like to go home. Auld Neilly, our bar man pulled me to one side and whispered “do you know who that is? Haven’t you heard of The Ponderosa!” Don’t care the bar’s shut, I replied, but getting rather nervous by now, whereupon my faither intervened and poured the drinks. Still remember the look of astonishment on his face, but to be fair he joked about it next time he came in and bought me a drink.

Read that article. I would be surprised if he has been replaced. As far as we hear, Lenny wasn’t into that side of things. Also, watching the same people making the same mistakes week in and week out would suggest that either we don’t have an analyst or that his observations haven’t been heeded.

I don’t know which of the two scenarios annoys me more.

Of course we might have appointed an analyst who isn’t very good.

Reading the article made me think of Celtic by numbers.

  14. The Scottish Government has caused a drop in the polls for the independence vote. It appears after 22 polls showing an Independent majority that the latest poll shows a 44 43 majority against,

Now I wonder how much this is down to the Salmond case which is not playing well for SNP. Alternatively, it could be due to an increase in popularity of Boris and Co who are stealing the effective way that NHS are rolling out the Vaccine.

Then again the Biased way in which Scottish government treated Sevco Covid 5 in comparison to the treatment dealt out to Celtic with fixture postponement and fines and the criticism of the pre-approved Dubai trip. This may have affected celtic minded voters.

How this plays out will be interesting?

i think chevely park might do this for their horses but michael o’leary seems to be sticking by him

Let’s all- thanks for reply, I didn’t know they could transfer trainers at such short notice, Mick Fitzgerald was in tears in an interview earlier, could be curtains for Elliott.
