Chasm, but Celtic should have done much better

460

For all of our dominance yesterday, you have to think there is room for considerable improvement. Passing in the first half was frequently poor, shooting throughout the game was invariably off target, and when we managed to keep it down and between the sticks, the keeper was able to read the shot. Gilks played well, but the truth is we flattered him.

Moussa Dembele grabbed all the headlines with his back-heel-flick-nutmeg-winning-goal, but I spent much of the game debating whether it was time he was rested. Against Newco last month, he held the ball up and linked play, while finding and exploiting space. Yesterday his linking was poor and he seldom found space.

The incisiveness we enjoyed watching as recently as the outing against Manchester City, was missing against Gladback on Wednesday and at Hampden yesterday.

There were also enormous positives. Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko were absolutely critical on Celtic’s grip on the game. Their positioning – when we were in possession – kept the ball flowing. They both gave us playmaker performances, and they didn’t miss a beat defensively either.

Again, just as on Wednesday, it didn’t work for Nir Bitton. When we play out from central defence like this the deep-lying playmaker role is crucial. He need to create space for us to move the ball forward, while he becomes an auxiliary defender as our full backs are so high up the field.

Stuart Armstrong came on and played higher up-field than Bitton and managed to put the squeeze on Newco.

The game reminded me of the League Cup semi-final two years ago, when Celtic subjugated an impotent Newco without scoring the volume of goals their superiority deserved. There was a chasm between the teams, which makes my belief that Celtic can play a lot better all the more interesting. Conversely I suspect that was a high water mark for Mark Warburton’s team.

The portents are good that he believes that game was a sign of progress.

As for Craig Thomson, that was self-evidently not good enough.

  1. We really should be worried, they outplayed us according to a couple of their players, there is no gap to speak of, and they have a whean of money coming in soon, it’s all in the plan you see…………………………..Now why didn’t we think of this cunning plan ?????

“It is difficult to invest in the club through official exchanges right now and people have reservations about lurking con men who might still benefit, so merchandising and other types of fundraising might not be a bad idea.

The simple economics is that 100,000 people parting with an average season ticket bounty of £500 would raise £50m

If the club could design and sell (but not wear to play and hence avoid any contractual litigation) a super special high quality replica top for that £500 and publish a book with the names of everyone who had one, or been gifted/remembered in this way then the book sales at e.g. £30 could pay for the top production, distribution and publishing costs. It would be an item to treasure.

Likewise, Rangers could run an annual lotto at £50 per ticket. 100,000 sales for a first prize of £1m would raise an extra £4m annually.

Also, a well-organised Rangers festival weekend could rake in £10m to £50m and become an annual event.

However, lets not kid ourselves. Our club went down the pan and almost died for lack of investment. The RST and other groups have all tried valliantly and raised significant sums of money, but nothing like these amounts. No fan group can seem to get 10,000 people never mind 100,000 to part with £50.

If we as a support cannot raise even £1m + then we must play a longer, more patient game and wait until we have the footballing breaks that allow us Champion’s League revenue and the kind of financial rewards that we have been denied for years thanks to us being cheated and abused by all and sundry.”

  2. Hi Paul67,

“As for Craig Thomson, that was self-evidently not good enough.”

Well that’s an interesting assessment, – for me it was a master class.

The first booking to the disallowed goal had him all the hallmarks of a ref trying to even the score.

But his real success was his whistling, at the least opportunity he broke up play… Celtic couldn’t get into their stride.

An early goal and we could easily have a hatfull.

Compare that to our performance against Manchester City where we had a World Class Referee.

Hope BR and the team are smarting…

    Hail Hail

  3. why dont we practice chipping the ball over the keepers legs when running in one one one on a keeper.

Have to admit I like Mourinho, he’s an excellent tactician and dedicated professional. Also find him quite humorous.

*oh dear Seville seems to be a distant memory now. If he hadn’t cheated us that night we would probably never have heard of him again.

I’m not decrying his achievements but he had plenty of money tae carry them out. He’s a classless and arrogant individual which was proven the night he ran past the manure dugout tae celebrate a last minute equaliser at OT, he’s lucky sir furious didnae gub him.

  18. Thomson is a serial cheat in this fixture yet Fleming gave him the game. Even his performances this season have been designed to give Thems an advantage — incl allowing Forrester to stay on park after 2 straight red tackles in the option of Howard Webb.

Yesterday the free total was 5 free kicks for Sevco for every one to the footballing team Celtic. The Sinclair penalty was debatable however Erik was denied a stonewaller in the first half with 2 arms wrapped around him. Thomshun decision was free kick to Sevco.

This season they have tried Collum , Thomshun. On Hogmanay Fleming who is stuck with the same cartel as Dallas has only added the Bigots son plus some no marks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go with Bobby Madhun for the next one

  23. Paul 67 et al,

I agree totally with your leader :- Chasm, but we should have done much better.

Yes we absolutely hammered them but nevertheless we only won by a single goal. Of course we know a perfectly good good was disallowed, but the amount of chances we missed is worrying. We must convert a greater ratio of chances.

It would have been a travesty if the Huns had converted their one half chance, but with such a close score line anything is possible. The Griffalo is magic and we must find a way to play two strikers against mediocre domestic sides, but I was raging with him for missing that one on one at he end of the game. Too casual or trying to be too clever.

I do not think the Sevco goalkeeper had a brilliant game, he had some luck and we were extremely wasteful.

Take away the hype and the crowd, Sevco are just a very mediocre team. It could and it should have been five or six nil.

Sevco remind me of Smarties, they had a letter under the lid when they were Rangers, but now with no letter under the lid they are both poor imitations that should be treated with contempt.

Sky.. the Company that is Killing Scottish football never mind Celtic.. and we can’t show a Live midweek game to even someone who lives in TimBuc2.. why because EUFA says so.. a Organisation that is Killing Scottish Football.. Celtic and every other smaller Clubs that have to abide by these Rules/Laws should take Sky and EUFA to Court in a Class Action.. it would be a Bosman for Clubs are there right to Own and Sell there own live games.. so who do Celtic Supporters pay when the want to watch Celtic Sky or there Partners or Sky’s love Childs like Setanta.. Ditto Midweek we are paying EUFA indirectly for Not being allowed to watch our own games Live.. Celtic FC could have there own rights to sell Celtic games to whoever they choose and also have the rights like some TV companies do to sell Sky Packages like EPL etc
