Chasm, but Celtic should have done much better

460

For all of our dominance yesterday, you have to think there is room for considerable improvement. Passing in the first half was frequently poor, shooting throughout the game was invariably off target, and when we managed to keep it down and between the sticks, the keeper was able to read the shot. Gilks played well, but the truth is we flattered him.

Moussa Dembele grabbed all the headlines with his back-heel-flick-nutmeg-winning-goal, but I spent much of the game debating whether it was time he was rested. Against Newco last month, he held the ball up and linked play, while finding and exploiting space. Yesterday his linking was poor and he seldom found space.

The incisiveness we enjoyed watching as recently as the outing against Manchester City, was missing against Gladback on Wednesday and at Hampden yesterday.

There were also enormous positives. Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko were absolutely critical on Celtic’s grip on the game. Their positioning – when we were in possession – kept the ball flowing. They both gave us playmaker performances, and they didn’t miss a beat defensively either.

Again, just as on Wednesday, it didn’t work for Nir Bitton. When we play out from central defence like this the deep-lying playmaker role is crucial. He need to create space for us to move the ball forward, while he becomes an auxiliary defender as our full backs are so high up the field.

Stuart Armstrong came on and played higher up-field than Bitton and managed to put the squeeze on Newco.

The game reminded me of the League Cup semi-final two years ago, when Celtic subjugated an impotent Newco without scoring the volume of goals their superiority deserved. There was a chasm between the teams, which makes my belief that Celtic can play a lot better all the more interesting. Conversely I suspect that was a high water mark for Mark Warburton’s team.

The portents are good that he believes that game was a sign of progress.

As for Craig Thomson, that was self-evidently not good enough.

  1. Watching the game again and have to say that Scott Brown gave the type of performance that you really need from a midfielder in a game like that. He completely bossed that area of the park.

A nice wee thing happened in work today. A colleague of mine originates from Bermuda and her da is an avid lurker of CQN. Well my colleague’s brother was getting married last week and consequently the family were over from Bermuda. Today she handed me a cheque for £250 as a donation to Minx and me for the Celtic Foundation sleep out next month.

Joe Kelly, take a bow sir and thank you very, very much from both of us.

  3. I posted this the other day.

Urgent: please read if you have already made a submission to the consultation

It has become evident that there has been some confusion with regard to Question 1 of the consultation. The question asks if you are supportive of the proposal and this refers to the proposal to repeal the Offensive Behaviour Act. Our preferred answer to this is ‘Fully supportive’.

Some people have clearly thought it was referring to the Offensive Behaviour Act itself and have ticked ‘Fully opposed’ but then gone on to provide reasons which set out why they are, in fact, in favour of the proposal to repeal. See below.

If you have done this – or think you might have – then please email James Kelly MSP (James.Kelly.MSP@Parliament.Scot) using the email address you used when making your submission and tell him you wish to change your answer to Q1 to Fully Supportive. This is very important because they will count your submission as being in favour of the Offensive Behaviour Act if you don’t change this.

    —–

Earlier I took some time to read some of the submissions and this is very much the case. Please if you made a submission and think you may have incorrectly completed the first question take the time to email James Kelly.

  4. Bit of a harsh assessment on our bhoys Paul67.

Usual weekend after a CL fixture, pressure game, potential banana skin and the threat of real embarrassment to our players if we either didn’t perform or lose – and the bhoys handled it.

Wasteful in front of goal certainly but courageous enough to keep wanting it, keep going forward and trying to win despite the ‘fear’ of losing one and triggering Sevco hysteria.

Job done. Lessons learned. Dembele did what good strikers do – kept ignoring his misses and a sub par (by his standard) performance and stuck it in the net. All the best ones do it.

In these games I love to win big or win late. Equally painful for the hoardes. Equally joyous for the good guys.

  5. Btw well done to Celtic for also making a submission to the consultation. More worrying is that the COPFS have also made one.

Does “operating with one hand tied behind your back” mean not having £250m of other people’s money to spend and not have to pay back?

I saw that a few were looking for Patrick Roberts to replace James Forrest at some point yesterday.

I have a theory that Brendan Rodgers actually intends to build a Celtic team – and probably doesn’t fancy playing loanees as there’s no future in it.

Of course, this might also have the side benefit of allowing Paddy to sign for Celtic a bit cheaper?…

  15. Brown was imperious yesterday.

He played a true captains role and showed disdain to his inferior opponents throughout..

On hun media they were whining like bitches about his play and wondering why he did not get red carded.

All because he showed them that their superiority complex was a sham by rag dolling the bitches in blue.

    It was funny to watch.
