Cheltenham, prosecco and the inevitable ban

245

Spanish authorities confirmed this morning that La Liga will be played behind closed doors for the next two weeks, leaving only Germany and England from Europe’s big five leagues permitting spectators.  Yesterday the Italian government banned all domestic sporting fixtures until 3 April, meaning Serie A games will not take place, even behind closed doors.

Authorities in Germany and the UK will now come under pressure, especially as leagues in Germany and England attract he highest attendances in the world.  The next move is likely to be in Germany, where the confirmed case number is similar to that in Spain and France.

Case numbers in the UK are a quarter those in Germany, France and Spain, there are still only 321 cases here, but if we follow a similar pattern, that figure will be over 1,000 by the weekend, when we can expect non-essential gatherings to be prohibited.  A ban is in the post.

The Cheltenham Festival runs from today until Friday.  The cynic in you might suggest a ban on sporting events will take place after the last of the Prosecco is supped in Gloucestershire.  I hope we do not see the now-annual player photos from the Festival…

  6. 168 new deaths from Covid-19 in Italy in last 24 hours, with 877 in serious/critical condition. These are huge numbers. The Italian lockdown procedures are much more flexible than those adopted by the authoritarian regime in China. Hermetically sealed borders were backed up by hauling quarantined residents with fever involuntarily out of their homes and transporting them to hastily assembled hospital facilities. Food was provided by the local government directly to residents confined to their dwellings. These measures are difficult to imagine in a democracy and lend credence to worries that the situation worldwide will dwarf the Chinese infection numbers.

  8. Of the 373 cases so far, the important statistic within that is how many of those cases were picked up abroad and brought back to the UK and how many had the virus passed on to them without having travelled. I heard on the news last week that of the first 60 or so cases, only 5 were actually passed on within the UK. I suspect that number is still proportionately low amongst the 373, hence why the Government has not yet imposed any draconian sanctions. The predicted number of cases today was lower than forecast. As it stands at the moment, the virus is being brought here but doesn’t appear to be spreading at an alarming rate.

Hopefully the measures taken in Italy, China and South Korea will help contain the virus and save us and other nations from implementing the same measures. I wonder what kind of intentional pressure was put on the Italians. It might not be a coincidence that with the worlds stock markets plunging yesterday, the Italians had acted by close of business. Lots of very rich and powerful people would not have been happy.

  9. Sorry if already posted, but from Bayer Leverkusen’s website, about their game vs Der Hun this week:

“… There is currently no evidence or information that the game will be kicked off in camera.”

The inevitable hun reaction? “What – the game’s no on the telly?”

Just watched the Mike Pence prezza. Utter nonsense from them over here (across the pond) as per.

Few wee token measures in place but again they manage to turn a coronavirus update into a state of the economy thing. A shambles as ever.

In private healthcare it makes no sense to have empty beds so a small outbreak can cripple the system. It isn’t really about deaths and 10,000,000’s of millions infected. They will be OK. Private Healthcare execs get fired for having more than one empty bed. Hospitals are jammed over here without a new virus. It’s the system that will kill them, not the virus.

“Just like my Ukraine transcript, the tests are perfect and beautiful.”

    Agent Orange said that.

    Save the NHS.

When we’re being told that we’re two weeks behind Italy it would one interesting to know how many of their cases at that point were imported and how many had spread

  13. Mourinho sounds very convincing and very intelligent in all his media interviews

Problem is so does Nagelsmann with a 4-0 aggregate victory behind him

I can see self quarantine being used for self preservation rather than social responsibility.

  15. CANAMALAR

By and large, I agree. I think the story is not that this thing is a new scary “we are going to die” thing, but more a thing that shows us how we really are getting screwed on healthcare, both sides of Gods good pond.

Will be honest though, more interested in the Michigan vote tonight. Large turnout reported..

  16. Funny wee update from the Grauniad.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which had backed Elizabeth Warren before she dropped out and encouraged voters to support Bernie Sanders, said that Sanders should shat in the race “until the March 15th debate at the earliest”.

Shat in the race? Isn’t that what Trump did?

  17. Particularly enjoying the Daily Record advice for Huns who wont get to Germany:

“While you will be hit with a fee for transferring Euros back to UK pounds you will be able to do so quickly and easily with multiple options.

Always make sure you check online for the best rate and avoid areas like train stations or airports where you will pay a hefty fee and uncompetitive rate for the convenience.”

The Italian Covid 19 situation (to date ) indicates that there was significant undetected local transmission in Northern Italy in late January /early February..The genie was out the bottle before the system had sorted the testing protocols out.

I believe Milan has strong economic ties with China due to the fashion trade.

It’s likely then that these trade exchanges brought the virus before China came clean and took measures to contain the virus.

As someone earlier said, by then the genie was out the bottle.

Trump is in denial and thinks the Coronavirus is a conspiracy against him. The latest news is that he thinks the press pack are trying to infect him. When rabid paranoia meets extreme narcissism…

The bigger problem for the USA is that they have a health sector, not a health service.
