Christie, Bolingoli, Griffiths, Elhamed

You can only beat the team in front of you, and in that respect, Celtic were scintillating against Nomme Kalju last night.  The precision and speed with which they moved the ball was a significant improvement on most of last season, the impact Ryan Christie had on this fact should not be underestimated.

Kalju defended solidly until the opening goal went in.  At this, their resistance crumbled.  Simultaneously, Boli Bolingoli went off injured, his second injury retirement in three games for Celtic.  On this basis, I am not convinced the player is injury-free, which may be inhibiting his performance.

When Mikey Johnston replaced Boli, Kalju were reduced to chasing shadows.  When Johnston, Christie, McGregor and Forrest are allowed the dictate tempo to the extent they were last night, they are remarkably effective.

Leigh Griffiths’ goal was cathartic for the player.  It was an exceptional free kick, reminiscent of his strike against Hapoel Be’er Shiva three years ago.  Last season we succeeded in winning a treble, despite being reduced to one striker for most of the campaign – and to none for some of it.  With Leigh back in the squad, Neil Lennon will have options that were not available earlier this year. Including playing two strikers, as he did last night.

With defensive numbers still low. yesterday we signed 28-year-old Israeli Hatem Abd Elhamed.  It remains to be seen how Neil Lennon views the player, who made his international debut replacing Nir Bitton last month, and may well replace him as central defensive cover.

You don’t know what happened in Tallinn that night – the Scotland fans turned up to cheer Estonia onto the park. The SFA acted disgracefully on the occasion (are you surprised).

Italy had already played under those floodlights, in a country which was recovering from Soviet occupation, the SFA tried to lord it, the fans didn’t like it and, to this day have a strong relationship with Estonia. It backfired on the SFA but if you go to Tallinn you will be very welcome.

One last thought I wonder if Progres Niederkorn have any fair play issues, bbc Scotland just gushed at goals from Aribo (cross border big wages) & Ojo (loan wages from the team that win the champions league) secured a 2-0 victory tonight … am pretty sure both goal-scorers will be earning money that Progres could not offer, obviously this would fair “if” the club paying these wages could actually afford them …

    UEFA fair play ?

Hatem has played right back 6 times in two seasons. If he is the answer, I don’t think Neil would still be looking. Seems to me he is cover for central defense, and maybe an emergency right back. But hey ho, he might turn out to be Danny McGrainish.😊

Am just going on Neil’s words and he said the “people” who say he isn’t a right back have never saw the player playing … by the way since you mention Danny McGrain am pretty sure Danny was surprised when a young Stephen O’Donnell was released and then went to Patrick, Kilmarnock and now a Scotland player and some think he would be a “cheap” option … what does the great Danny McGrain know about a “specialist” right back :-) all about opinions

Was Boli Bolingoli correct for “when was the last player we signed put straight in the team” ?

  20. Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Friday from a not quite so hot, cloud covered and still pleasant East Kilbride. 8 more sleeps till we begin our quest for 9 (NINE) in a row.

  21. Free C Dobbs – to answer you question

When old Rangers used to pitch in with good euro results, between them and us scotland earner enough coefficient points for scotland to be about eighth ranked nation giving automatic CL for the champs and qualification CL for runners up.

When olds rangers died no other scottish club stepped up to the mark and scotland ranking plummeted – the ranking used for this year’s competition is 26th. I want all scottish clubs to get wins in europe to help bring us back to automatic qualification to CL and avoid pre season before the schools are finished.

Due to sevco’s wee run last year (added to ourselves) scotland will be rated as 20th for next year. Similar year on year results (it’s a 5 year process) will take us back up to the position where there might only be one qualifier, if any at all, for us. I will continue to hope scottish teams do well in europe because that is what is best for Celtic IMHO. Hope that answers your question.

This pre-season hiatus is interminable and my hunger for Sellick games turns into a craving; addicted so am ur.

So, why don’t Celtic show us tomorrow’s closed doors friendly against Man City’s u-23 side? If youz’re anything like me, you’re dying to see the squad players get a run out…so we can see who our next Boyata, Ntcham or Roberts will be from Citeh, and so we – CQN experts – can help the club choose its best starting line-up ;)

Seriously, is it a cost or rights thing that prevents them screening the game for us??

  23. Iniquiitousiv 1.34am

Too early in the morning for me to even guess :-)

    QF 7.25am

Surely old Rangers gained these xo-efficient points illegally with improperly registered players ?

But I do agree I would prefer all Scottish clubs to make the Europa group stages, especially playing on a Sunday would hopefully have them playing catch up on the current champions

  24. It is not often talked about but even if we make the ‘play off round 4’ in the current Champions league Q we will earn around 4.5 million in prize money even if we get knocked out and put into the Europa league.

It is unlikely we could even match that figure with a really decent Europa run.

This is the huge difference between winning the Scottish league and finishing second or third.

And of course we all know the bag of gold you can earn if you actually make the champions league.

We need to stay focused this season and keep the noisey neighbours in their cash strapped pond.

  25. A rogue seagull ripped off a man’s right testicle as he sunbathed naked in his back garden, it has emerged.

Experts say the fearsome bird mistook the man’s exposed privates as a couple of birds eggs and dropped in for a tasty snack.

As the man – who has not been named – dozed on his patio in his detached home near Ipswich, the seagull swooped from the sky, and with one bite of its beak ripped away the right testicle.

In gripping scenes that could have been written by a copywriter, he woke screaming in agony and saw the bird flying away with one of his ‘crown jewels’ wedged in its yellow beak.

His wife called an ambulance, and staff at Ipswich Hospital’s accident and emergency department had to patch him up, and give him a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.

A hospital source said: “Nobody could quite believe it when the poor chap was brought in. There was a lot of blood and he was in agony, but he will feel better in a few weeks.

“The injury is not life-threatening, and tests have confirmed that his remaining testicle is still in working order, so he will be able to have children.”

A spokesman for research group Seagull Watch International confirmed that seagulls often feed on the eggs of small birds.

“Eggs are full of protein – it’s why we eat them, after all. Gulls will often steal other birds’ eggs, so it is unfortunate for this man that his private parts resembled a couple of eggs in a nest.

“It was no doubt a young adult gull that is still learning to be independent.

“This is the first time we have heard of such an attack in the UK, and it is probably a one-off event, but just in case this particular seagull has now got a taste for ‘men’s eggs’, we would recommend putting some shorts on while sunbathing at home.”

A spokesman for the Albert Hall declined to comment
