Ciftci, Nicholas and shiftless brilliance

315

Of all the players signed for Celtic by Ronny Deila, Nadir Ciftci was the strangest. He faced us for Dundee United after news leaked we were interested in him, so I paid close attention. After the game I was convinced he would not sign for Celtic, such was his languid performance.

More than any other Celtic manager, Ronny valued movement. Stefan Johansen was his architype player, always covering ground. Nadir was the exact opposite of this that evening for Dundee United.

Maybe Ronny thought he could build on Nadir’s touch and perform an engine and mind-set upgrade, whatever the reason behind this particular raid on United, the player was never going to cut it at Celtic.

He reminds me very much of Charlie Nicholas (although Nicholas had heaps more talent). Charlie was irrepressible in his first period at Celtic, but the game changed under Charlie’s golden feet. When he returned to Celtic, he looked lazy. In reality he was the same player, but shiftless brilliance was no longer enough.

I hope Motherwell get a turn out of Nadir during his six month loan.  There’s talent buried there, if they can make it move around a little.

The CQN Podcast: A Celtic State of Mind (EP28) with former Celtic director Tom Grant

Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Celtic’s ex-director, Tom Grant, who offers a fascinating insight into the running of the club in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tom Grant explains exactly why Celtic refused to complete the Mo Johnston transfer in 1989, and lifts the lid on audacious efforts by Billy McNeill to recruit Peter Beardsley and Steve Bruce.

Tom Grant also dissects his relationship with Fergus McCann, and the impact of the ‘Celts For Change’ movement in overturning the ‘family dynasty’ board in 1994.

    It was actually 1996.

10 year old me was watching from the shoogly temporary stand…

  2. watching that again, Celtic 3 Rangers 2 , 1982.

I was in the front stand that day treating my future wife to a day out at the football for her 16th birthday. How generous of me. Spoiled some when she kept asking “who is davie cooper ?” .

anyways, i forgot these highlights –

    – Nicholas gave McKinnon a full elbow in the gub right in front of me

    – Celtic should have had 2 penalties and another 3 goals.

    – the state of the pitch

    – the brilliance of McStay …………….

and for anyone slagging Gordon these days, look at the bloody shambolic goalkeeping of Bonnar.

  5. Big Jimmy,

We called the temporary stand ” The pub end”

You had to be tanked up or absolutely mad to frequent there. Very possibly many of the attendees were a happy mixture of both.

Sadly The Green Man has not posted for a few months now.

I don’t know if he gave up or was red carded.

I enjoyed his posts, although I didn’t always agree.

He would be outnumbered at times but stood his ground and made his points.

If we don’t have diversity and disagreement on the blog then it becomes ” a clique” as Kev J would say. :-))

  7. I am in the Ronny didn’t scout and choose the players camp.

The wonderful scout that Brendan got rid of as soon as humanly possible did IMO, John Park had a few very decent hits, but his misses far outweighed them.

  8. Hello CQN, Long time lurker, begging already. Does anyone have a link to the wee halfwit singing We are Rangers Super Rangers we don’t do walking away? he plays on a toy organ and does all the shoulder movements. I want to show it to a pal but it was removed from youtube.

…Cheers mate for that 1982 link.

Your right about Packy..he was useless at crosses his whole career. Craig Gordon streets ahead of him imo/

I went to that game in 1982 as I said, and I was with 4 of my fitba team mates. I was almost 27 and at my peak LOL.

Anyway we played early that day and had a couple of bers in town, and our Ranjurs mate had his car. He also had his ticket for the Huns end.

We 4 celtic fans on leaving the ground after that victory weren’t sure if Bobby the Hun would still be waiting for us in his car to take us back into Glasgow city centre ?

He was..good man…but he was sick as we 4 celts were singing oor heids aff in his motor !

  10. Bers ???…BEERS !

  11. ” and for anyone slagging Gordon these days,”

Gordon is dreadful. I mean, how many goals have we let in in our previous four games? AND every one of those goals has been down to Gordon.

Was it not Terry Neill that signed Charlie?

*Yes he did, he was the 2nd highest signing from a Scottish side and allegedly the highest paid player in the UK.

I never really saw Charlie as I had left while he was still a youth with the Boys Club and rarely returned at the time. I had a mate that was a regular at games and called him a cross between Jinky and Kenny.

I had an emergency journey hame and went via Heathrow, on the shuttle from London to Glasgow were 2 recognisable passengers, one was the famed “rivers of blood politician” who suggested repatriating people of dusky skin back to their country or that of their parents of origin, a bit like cormack the Edinburgh demagogue 35 years earlier in relation to the Irish Catholics.

By this time he was a unionist politician in the Black North, the entourage of secret service that surrounded him at Glasgow Airport was something I had never seen before.

The other notable passenger was Terry Neil, here I am a wee Tim on the same flight as two predominate NI men, this was the year of the hunger strike, didnae feel too enthused at that.

It seems that Terry was preparing a bid for George McCluskey and was up to watch him at Love Street that day. Enroute tae the bonnie banks I passed bus loads of Celtic supporters heading for the game and wishing I was on one of them.

Charlie was on the right wing as he had lost his place to “Chicken George” and Davie Provan was out injured. George was the star man, laid a goal on for Charlie and scored the winner with a cracking shot.

One week later and all is well with the reason I had hastily flown home so off tae my spiritual home I went. It was a league game against the Arabs. Same side as the week before and my chance to at last see Charlie, I also saw for the only time Davie Moyes in the hoops.

Once again George was the star and scored in a 1-1 tie. Big talking points were Ralph Milne punching the ball intae the net for the opener, Frank McGarvey being pulled down in the box, both times the ref, Jimmy Delaney’s son, refused tae consult his linesman, as the old saying goes “your ain kind are the worst”, Frank also crashed one of the post, just wisnae our day. As for Charlie, never done enough tae write home about.

One foot note here, I was with a young family member, big lhad but still only 16. We miss our train at Duke Street so I wander over tae a pub close by, he cautions me saying I shouldnae go in there. Nae colours on and wearing a Dallas Cowboys sleeveless jaiket ala “Mork and Mindy” style which was fashionable at the time, it was like a scene fae “American Werewolf in London” when I walked in, got served and bought the bhoy an Irn Bru, the scores came across the tele, deidco had won up at Dens Park, I remarked that was a good score 2 locals came over enquiring where I got that jaiket and was I at the game the day. Aye over fae Canada and just wanted tae see a game and my local team the Sons were away at Dunfermline, with the mention of local team they then asked where I originally came fae, I responded Balloch to which they replied they worked for the Loch Lomond Distillery and liked the punters doon there. Looks like I may have dodged a bullet there, good pint though.

Next time I saw him was over here when he was with the national side and had just joined the Arse, he was roundly booed by the kilt wearing and plantation descendant crowd. A couple of older Tims over here were glad he had left as seemingly his behaviour off the pitch left a lot to desire.

Fast forward 12 years and the reason I went hame in ’81 has now went tae that Jingle in the sky. After all the formalities have been taken care of I once again head tae Parkheid against the calvinists with a durty wee midden playing for them. The highlight of this brutal 0-0 game sitting in the Jungle was the abuse shown tae the Quisling.

Charlie is eventually subbed and as he runs off one fan in front of me expresses tae his pal that Charlie should just keep running and no come back as he’s the only decent player on the park and disnae deserve tae be subbed.

Another further down one more loudly shouts “eff off Nicholas ya lazy bassa and don’t come back, ya effin breest”. The tale of 2 supporters, personally I wasn’t impressed either and was one of those that welcomed him back.

  15. How many Celtic goalkeepers can say. ” I was the no 1 goalkeeper in a domestic 69 game unbeaten run.

  19. SAINT STIVS and BIG JIMMY

My biggest memory of Packy Bonner was his outstanding ability to shrink whenever he faced a one on one.

The amount of times he was beaten by a three foot high chip was astounding.

As for his ability at crosses???

He was a decent shotstopper who’s time was up when the backless rule changed.

  20. embramike says ” Yer team’s deid…Beat it!” on

Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic is being targeted by Italian giants Lazio during the January transfer window, according to reports in Italy today.

The Seria A giants are chasing Champions League qualification for next season, and currently find themselves in the top-four, two points behind third-placed Inter, with a game in-hand.

But the club fear losing Holland international Stefan de Vrij, who is being linked with clubs as prestigious as Barcelona – and Corriere dello Sport apparently reckon Simunovic could be the man to replace him.

    Yes or No …… ?

The 23-year-old Bosnian has been a regular since Brendan Rodgers arrived in the summer of 2016 but has often struggled with injuries, and he almost left for another Italian side, Torino, at the start of last season.

  21. Received replies from two members of the Scottish Parliament re. O.B.Act reform. Ken MacIntosh informs me that as Presiding Officer in the Parliament he may not express opinions on issues before said body, nor is he able to vote.

On the other hand, Maurice Golden tells me that he will vote for a change to the act. I await the reply of Inverclyde’s sitting member who has not replied favourably to requests for change in the past and I have communicated with him since 2014. So I expect no movement there.

  22. EMBRAMIKE / BADA

I think if BR gives the nod should the Jozo bid come in for real this time, then coupled with selling Erik who is definitely going, he could be leaving himself open to criticism from fans for leaving us light at Centre Back.

Two from Ajer, Boyata, Compper and Bitton enough to take us past Zenit and beyond?.

    Not to mention the treble.
