Ciftci, the bite and having his card marked

649

Starting with a blank sheet of paper and a player found guilty of biting an opponent, I’d struggle to justify a punishment less than 6 games.  It’s by no means the worst thing that happens on a football field, or the most dangerous, but it’s primitive, unhygienic and poses health risks.

Few of us have prior knowledge of Nadir Ciftci, so there’s little point in looking online for character references.  The player was charged with biting an opponent.  He denied the allegation but was found guilty by an SFA disciplinary panel yesterday.  I’ve seen photos of Jim McAlister’s bite-sized leg wound and have no interest in hearing mitigating comment about what happened during the Dundee derby.

Despite this, Nadir is having a good month.  He signed for Celtic, made his debut and potentially has five Champions League qualifiers to play between now and his domestic suspension concluding at the end of August (yes, six league games in August).  If he’s a clever guy, he’ll force his way into the manager’s plans for those five games and never look back.  If not, he’ll find his card marked, like a Dundonian leg.

Ar Glasgow Airport he was actually asked if Celtic condoned Ciftci’s behaviour.

Yes. He was actually asked if Celtic approved of biting opponents.

The correspondent/editor then thought that it was worth reporting that question and the answer. You’d like to think it was a work experience pretend scribbler, but you’d be wrong.

  6. Good afternoon fellow Tims.

Tuppence worth on the Ciftci ban. I think he was lucky to get away with 6 in all honesty but, given the incremental bans given to Suarez through his career, it makes sense.

For those calling for the player to be punished and not the club then how do you suggest that works other than a fine. Not so long ago folks were saying that Mohsni should be banned from playing from any future clubs after punching Lee Erwin in the phizog, as he was being released.

We knew that he was going to be punished when we signed him, why moan now.

forgive me and this is a serious question, what is your point regarding cifti?,we knew this charge was against him and was likely to be upheld, before we signed him, we still took him he deserves the ban there is no conspiracy. Almost to a man on here we think he got what had coming.time to move on and see what kind of player we have in cifti, personally i’m not convinced but am more than willing to be proved wrong,

Which (excuse for a) journalist asked this stupid, stupid question re Ciftci?

Asked whether the club condones such behaviour, Collins said: “No, not at all.”

What kind of answer did he expect?

  9. Rwe,

only way to stop msm shite is a complete blanket ban, I know we have contractual obligations, but start with the retard and hun, in my opinion, of course.

I guess my point is that the rules should be looked at to see if they are appropriate. We all accept it – me included – because we knew it was coming. But it looks like a ludicrous rule if a club that wasn’t involved can be punished for something a player at another club did.

  11. No Celtic fan, as far as I am aware, is ‘moaning’ at the length of Ciftci’s ban.

    Nor is the club.

It is what most of us expected.

    HH!!

  12. I don’t think Cifcti or Ronny are discussing the length of the suspension at all.

Celtic have accepted the ruling and are “moving on.”

They are working on more important things.

Like practicing on an Icelandic astroturf pitch.

Celtic were fully aware of the situation and will have factored in at least 6 games without the player- they still felt he was a good investment.

The player can choose to look at that vote of confidence a few ways:

    1. I need to recognise that my behaviour was/is foolish but this club are showing faith in me and giving me a chance to redeem myself. Now I want to repay that faith knuckle down and score loads of goals

    2. He might take the view that he can do what he likes, bite people and still have teams paying big money and double/treble my salary – so I’m a superstar and I high demand and why should I change a thing?

I believe he will use this as a wake up call.

Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery was hospitalised this morning with food poisoning.

Poor Franck was was having a bath and starting eating what he thought were coloured sweets from a bowl at the bathside.

In actual fact, he was munching away at little soap “pearls”.

“I thought they were my favorite “Dragibus” sweets – I love the little black and red ones best.” said Franck.

“I only relalised my error when I started making bubbles when I talked…”

Ribery will be unavailble for selection for 2 weeks while he recovers…

Thats the main reason why I am not convinced on this player, as I said, hope I’m wrong.

    Typical ole BBC hurting churnalist.

Diabolical anti Celtic mind set, deliberately aimed at John Collins.

If the ‘condoning question’ had been asked of a Jock Stein a Robert Kelly or a McCann the ‘institutionally biased’ would have received both barrels, and a proper answer.

Im not in any way condoning biting but

Putting things into perspective – if a wee bite is given a 8 match ban – what does mcculloughs assault on kayal merit – what did the romanian thugs career ending tackle on john kennedy merit – the list is long

  21. Anyone who thinks he would have got a 6 game ban if still at united is kidding themselves.. Not guilty or Not proven at worst… He kicked Scott Brown on the head as plain as day on camera last year.. not guilty. skirmish with linesman..not guilty.. the Tonev case shows the complete bias.. on the grounds of probability!!

We’re not being punished “for something a player at another club did”. The punishment is for our player.

Now I think there’s an issue as to why the disciplinary took so long but I still think any punishment should carry over from one team to another. Otherwise any player knowing he had a move on the cards could do anything in the last game of the season, aware that it wouldn’t affect him in the next team.

  24. Sorry did not want to panic anyone ‘The Rangers FC’ (Glasgow) v Burnley was under International Friendlies section not Champions League … but we all knew that anyway.

Old shift key prob knocked a couple a Hundy k of his retail price with thon bite antic.

I remember we signed a ginger bloke that volleyed Eyal Berkovic. I had my doubts about him but he went on to be an all round nice bloke and scored my all time favourite goal at Anfield.

I reckon Nadir will be a new Jacki and score a few but never fulfill his potential due to the size of his head and waistline. It’s Leigh for me at the minute but hopefully we sign somebody better .
