Ciftci, the bite and having his card marked

649

Starting with a blank sheet of paper and a player found guilty of biting an opponent, I’d struggle to justify a punishment less than 6 games.  It’s by no means the worst thing that happens on a football field, or the most dangerous, but it’s primitive, unhygienic and poses health risks.

Few of us have prior knowledge of Nadir Ciftci, so there’s little point in looking online for character references.  The player was charged with biting an opponent.  He denied the allegation but was found guilty by an SFA disciplinary panel yesterday.  I’ve seen photos of Jim McAlister’s bite-sized leg wound and have no interest in hearing mitigating comment about what happened during the Dundee derby.

Despite this, Nadir is having a good month.  He signed for Celtic, made his debut and potentially has five Champions League qualifiers to play between now and his domestic suspension concluding at the end of August (yes, six league games in August).  If he’s a clever guy, he’ll force his way into the manager’s plans for those five games and never look back.  If not, he’ll find his card marked, like a Dundonian leg.

I can understand why some folks might feel that the Nadir suspension unfairly punishes his new club.

Along the same lines, lets think of a situation where a star player is sent off against Celtic and subsequently receives a 1 match ban.

Is it not the case that Celtic were the team who were disadvantaged when the player committed the sending off offence, but it’s the team who played against Celtics opponents next who really benefit while the star player serves out his one match ban?

It could even be the case that the team who play Dundee united next may be Celtics title rivals (for example Aberdeen) and the banning of the star Dundee Utd player in a game vs Aberdeen could actually disadvantage celtic further.

Like I said, I don’t offer a solution, but the banning of players seems to give the benefit to the opponents that play the team next and not the team who had the offence committed against them.

In an ideal situation Dundee (who were sinned against) would have some advantage rather than Celtic having some disadvantage. Perhaps he should serve out his ban not for the next consecutive 6 games, but in the case of Nadir maybe he should be banned for the next 6 games he played against Dundee

    ————————————————————————

Some good examples in there where advantage is given to other teams rather than the team sinned-against. I suppose if the player is still at the same club then there is an argument to say that the club he plays for should receive some sanction for that competition. Maybe that’s the rationale for the existing rule. Not sure it makes sense when a player moves to another club and the new club is disadvantaged.

Have the good people of Burnley been warned?

Also, let’s scrape together the money and bring James McClean home.

Typical of the mind-set of so many on this forum – sign him because he hates Britain.

One is tempted to say to these dyed in wool Irish Republicans, as we should to the Islamic terrorists who run Britain down, if you don’t like it here, why not just go and live in Ireland – there would not be many takers.

My Grandfather was from Sligo and Grandmother from Donegal – I am proud of my Irish roots, and, of Celtic’s Irish roots, and there has not been a year since I was TEN, that I have not been back at least once. – but I am not a ‘knee-jerk’ myopic numptie.

One of the cornerstones of any smart transfer policy is adding value. That’s why signing younger players is smart business. As players progress in their peak years, their market value will likely increase. With the seven signings that Warburton has made he has already more than doubled the market value of Rangers playing squad.

According to data from Transfermarkt, the go-to site for reliable transfer valuations, Warburton inherited a squad valued at £2.7 million.

When the signings of Tavernier & Waghorn become official, the market value of Rangers squad will have increased to £6.8 million. That is a 152% increase in value from seven signings. That’s remarkable business for roughly £600,000 of spending.

I guess having a manager who has actual experience in the business world really does pay off.

Ha! The only thing semi-reliable about transfermarket is the game stats, and I have my doubts about them as well.

The only reason I use it at all, is that it’s single source for game stats, so at least the margin of error should be consistent.

Andy Halliday: I’ve not been a Rangers fan since the day I was born.. it goes back even further than that

    06:55, 21 July 2015

    By Gary Ralston

BOYHOOD bluenose Halliday reckons he was a supporter before he was even born, having gone to his first Old Firm game when he was still in his mother’s womb.

Andy Halliday is put through his paces

RANGERS fans got it all wrong when they claimed Andy Halliday was born a Bluenose – he went to his first Old Firm game when he was still in his mother’s womb.

Halliday has been there, seen it and worn the babygrow after he re-signed for his idols eight years after they left him in tears by showing him the door at Ibrox.

The former Livingston, Middlesbrough and Bradford midfielder was raised on the Copland Road, owned a season ticket for 16 years and comes from a long line of Light Blues supporters.

He failed his English exam at school because he was so late back from the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester and trips to follow the team abroad were regular occurrences during his teenage years.

It was never going to be any other way as his dad, Colin, and mum, Lynne, are such fanatics she even went to Celtic Park in August 1991, almost eight months pregnant, to follow follow her favourites.

Rangers won 2-0, courtesy of a Mark Hateley double, in a game that made such an impression she even considered naming her boy after the England striker when she gave birth five weeks later.

Surprisingly, perhaps, Halliday will make only his second appearance on the Rangers pitch when he plays against Burnley tonight, a decade after running out with his schoolpals for a half-time exhibition kickabout.

It will be an emotional occasion, the culmination of years of hard work and triumph over adversity and, he hopes, the beginning of an adventure that will take Rangers all the way back to the big time after he penned a two-year deal.

Rangers have signed Andy Halliday on a two year deal

Halliday said: “Players come over from Madrid and say they were brought up Rangers fans but I was. If you’re raised on the Copland Road there isn’t much choice about which team you’ll support.

“I’ve done the away games, including the European trips. I was born into it – actually, my first Rangers game was an Old Firm match when my mum was pregnant so I have been going to Rangers games before I was even born.

“She loves telling that story. She told me it the other day – again.

“I’ve heard it umpteen times. She was going to call me Mark after Mark Hateley because he scored a double that day. I don’t like the name so I’m buzzing she chose something else.

“She was almost nine months gone – my old man would have gone mental had she given birth at Parkhead.

“Unfortunately, she won’t be here for the Burnley game as she booked a holiday months ago but dad will be there. Mum will be back for the game against Hibs on Saturday.”

Halliday’s mum and dad were there to wipe away the tears when he was released by Rangers’ head of youth George Adams in 2006 but his support for the club never wavered.

He didn’t kick a ball for three months but laughed off suggestions that, living in the shadow of the stadium, it was like being chucked by a girlfriend only to be forced to face her in the street every day

  15. O.G.Rafferty

Players value is initially what their contract is worth. If their value is inflated on Transfermarkt it is probably due to the worth of their contract plus what that website deems them to be worth as a fee at the time of signing it.

It is a fairly accurate reflection most of the time but like anything they do get things wrong.

I would not value my squad on that website though. Whilst it is a handy guide a player is only worth what someone will pay for them. In the past though the media in Scotland via over egging a Rangers or more recently Sevco FC player can really push their value through the roof. Boumsong = £10m months after joining on a Bosman. D Wilson = £5m. Lee Wallace getting valued at £3m in the lower leagues and hounding Gordon Strachan for a Scotland call up.

Let’s be honest we all know that most of their own league will be laughing at these comments in a few weeks time when these guys are struggling to settle into the Championship.

  19. James McLean’s protest was inappropriate and infantile. I have done the same myself when younger but I’ve learned it is a futile gesture that only serves to deminish yourself as an individual.

I now avoid situations where I may be expected to stand for the national Anthem of the UK or England, I excuse myself and take a leak, its that easy.

Young James should have had discussions with the club and arranged to join the team after the preliminaries, it too is that easy.

I can understand the reaction from England/UK, if someone disrespected the Irish nation anthem I’d expect the exact same outcry.

    Disagree to be honest.

Bowed his head and respected the anthem. Why other nationalities in his team felt the need to turn to a foreign flag is beyond me.

Hope some of his team mates stick up for him.

Also a lot of the media are saying he turned his back on the flag. Totally inaccurate. He never moved. They also turned to the side. The photo itself show the rest of the players side on to James. They moved he did not.

The boy deserves a lot of respect for standing to his principles. If only more people in his situation were as brave to stand by their principles.

    LB

  22. LiviBhoy

You sort of contradicted yourself there a bit – I’ve learned its better to excuse yourself in those situations, I’m sure his club would have been sympathetic and made the necessary arrangements for him to join the team afterwards.

  23. murdochbhoy

McClean has been instructed by Pullis that from here on in he’ll have to face any flag being flown and observe Qstf being played.

Do you think he’d have been excused to ‘take a leak’ given his club’s subsequent response?

In my opinion McClean displayed integrity and deserves respect for that.
