cinch merely the fodder in war against SPFL chiefs

796

The business model of the SPFL’s new sponsor, cinch, is to sell cars directly to the public, cutting out the dealer network.  Newco’s chairman owns a large car dealership which sponsors Newco (although it is not a shirt sponsor).

Newco have refused to comply with the SPFL contract by adding the cinch logo to players’ sleeves and elsewhere.  They claim compliance would break an existing commercial deal, presumably with their own chairman, but have refused to provide evidence of any existing deal to the league.

League and club sponsors often conflict.  While the SPFL was sponsored by Ladbrokes, Celtic had Dafabet blazoned across their chest and Newco had their own gambling partner.  Newco’s position appears to be that any club with a pre-existing agreement with any one of its partners can veto a league sponsorship deal. Quite a thing, with 42 clubs, some of which have 20 commercial sponsorship partners.

It is always possible that the SPFL’s rules are poorly drafted on such matters, the SFA were able to exploit what appeared to be a clear rule before, but the League have examined their position and have escalated the issue.  Yesterday, chairman Murdoch MacLennan wrote to all 42 clubs, stated the league’s position and informed clubs he had referred the matter to the SFA’s arbitration process.

If you think this all seems a bit contrived, you are not alone.  Why stand and fight on such a puny hill?  Newco are not the private fiefdom of their chairman, he is not Cnut (be careful), able to turn the tide against cinch, so why antagonise every non-compliant club in the league?

Newco want rid of MacLennan and especially SPFL chief exect Neil Doncaster.  Neither will do their bidding.  If the club can find a contractual oversight, it gives them grounds to call for their resignations, again.

There are other mattes at play; step forward Malmo manager, Jon Dahl Tomasson, who yesterday alluded to the matter we discussed in our State of the Club blog 10 days ago.  Newco need Champions League money more acutely than oxygen itself.  Should the wheels come off the white charger tonight, you can expect conflicts on every corner.

I never get what is it about people who think they are too special to follow rules.  There is a want about them.  Are we going to see pyros from the Newco directors’ box next?  Seems logical.  Fight The Man, even if The Man is just a salaried someone, responsible for converting advice or strategy onto structure.

  1. If Gordon Strachan is coming to help out with development squads etc,it’s a good appointment, what is it with some supporters Gordon done ok when he was the manager,Why don’t these supporters go after the present board for all the damage they done to the club last season, anyway my seat is the front of the main stand ,for the life of me I can’t understand the e mail from the ticket office regarding me being relocated any help would be appreciated.

Eddy running down his contract is a double blow for us , it restricts us for buying in this window and we get nothing if he stays to the end .

“But the eye-watering scale of these compensation pay-outs are entirely due to the sustained and serious wrongdoing of the Crown Office who knowingly tried to jail innocent men”.

I’ve still to read an article on WHY the Crown Office tried to jail innocent men.

It wasn’t an accident. Who sanctioned the witch hunt and who stood to gain??

  7. Just for the sake of clarity ERNIE..

    £100 is NOTHING to me..

.I won more than £100 last night on Malmo AND the Horse Racing Bets coming up…THAT excess of £100 will NOT change my life nor will it determine ” How Much” I bet Today and Tomorrow etc on the Horses and Celtic…or ” How Much” I will spend in the Pub in the next few days ?

Unlike you and the JHB Chump…I will ENJOY spending the Bookies money on Celtic, horses and Beer….and NOT MY own money

Celtic must provide a Red Zone for both clubs in the form of a fan-free area for the substitutes and club officials to allow them to socially distance.

To facilitate this, the front stand areas immediately to the right and left of the tunnel are closed to supporters.

The same happened at Ibrox last night. It is a temporary measure.

  13. ‘Daily Mail reporting Eddie willing to run down his contract…’

Well, it’d be the first time French Eddie had actually run since last August’s transfer window. More likely he’d trot or shuffle down his contract. As for him refusing a move; risky business, mon ami – transfer monies for ‘pretty decent’ players have been torpedoed of late. CFC should take l’argent et courir.

If it makes you feel any better, when Malmo went down to 10 men, I metaphorically kissed my bet goodbye.

    Made my win even better.

  15. Big Jimmy , couldn’t agree more .

Doesn’t matter , If you won a pound or a grand last night .

I love to beat the bookie anytime, to do it on a huns defeat is just all the sweeter .

  16. Celtic are at Odds of ” 11/10″ with Bet365 to be winning at Half Time AND Full Time….THAT Bet at those odds MAY be worth a £100 stake or more…I think that “11/10” is quite generous ?

Maybe I will be proved wrong…but NO matter…its only money ?

    ###

The size of the pay outs should largely be determined by the financial losses that the individuals have suffered because of the actions of Plod and CoFOS, not by the seriousness of whatever wrongdoing plod and CoPFOS have committed.

The sums involved are very high and it has to be of concern that the amount of the pay outs are being agreed to by the bodies accused of the wrongdoing rather than being determined by a Judge.

Agree with you about all the mumbling going on. From the Celtic website:

Gordon will spend his time looking at our activities within our Football Academy, our Women’s Team and newly established B Team, with a view to providing recommendations to Chief Executive Dom McKay on how we can develop these areas further, feeding into wider work ongoing across the Club.

Are the payouts being done this way to keep Police Scotland & the Crown Office away from scrutiny in a court? por cierto

Bringing Gordon Strachan in on a consultancy basis for 3 months is a great move. The youths & colts will greatly benefit from his experience.

It’s a politician making the point on the scale of compensation Ernie, not me.

    My point is:

I’ve still to read an article on WHY the Crown Office tried to jail innocent men.

It wasn’t an accident. Who sanctioned the witch hunt and who stood to gain??

  27. Anyone with any doubts about the seismic importance of last nights result should read Paul67’s recent article again.

We’re lucky enough to have someone on our side with an excellent understanding of football finances. When he makes big statements like qualification for this year’s champions league will have a bearing on the competition they are able to give us for the next ten years he doesn’t do it lightly. We’ve been fed a steady stream of anxiety inducing guff about the Huns and their financial position, their debt position, the riches that await over the next two years when they qualify, even £40m in annual media rights when they take over Scottish football. But not from Paul, when he makes a statement like that in the knowledge that it could cause serious to concern to fellow Celtic supporters it should be taken seriously.

Paul will no doubt be along later to lay things out better than I can. I’d suggest you put aside the petty squabbles and read it, it’ll tell you about stuff that will have a bearing on Celtic’s success for a long time.

Meantime, I’d suggest you all enjoy the moment, like a child would.

  28. TURKEYBHOY on 11TH AUGUST 2021 9:53 AM

‘Does anyone actually know what his remit will be.’

    ###

Bottom line will be to make Celtic better.

Same as the remit of every other appointment at the Club.

Fine, except that it’s a zero sum game for clubs in the same league. If one gets better the others are disadvantaged.

Well done Tom, I also backed ITALY to win the EURO’s before the Tourney started at odds of ” 8/1″.

I also got a few ” Correct scores” up along the way.

I also back the Horses most days if not every day.

For years Ive been backing the ” GODOLPHIN” Stable…otherwise known as ” The Boys in Blue” because of the Owners/Stables colours etc, howver..

A.BALDINGS Horses just can NOT stop winning in recent months…or at least being PLACED at BIG Odds.

Ive had winners of his at great odds of 28/1 12/1 10/1 8/1, 7/1…etc etc… in recent times.

  30. You know I had the hunch that french Eddie would let his contract run down . Is there really anyone out there who would pay 20 million for him In his present form and contract situation . Imho he has done very little for the team of late and his body language stinks . If we are depending on a sale to bring in the boy Henry who is the type we could really do with , big , strong , fast , with an eye for goal . Imagine oor wee star running onto flicks from that big striker . But sadly it looks like if we can’t punt eddy we can’t finance a deal for Henry , which as far as I’m concerned would be a sad affair . HH

  31. I think those slagging the WGS appointment are missing the point.

It is a 3 month consultancy gig to advise on restructuring Football Academy, B Team & Women’s team.

Our Academy has not being working well, we are not bringing enough players through, our top talent are being lured away, a review is long overdue, all credit to Dom for addressing this situation.

If you are a CEO & wish to do a proper analysis before you act, the first thing is to set a time frame, making a 3 month appointment stops this review dragging on.

You can’t appoint an existing staff member, you must bring in an outsider, yet an outsider who knows nothing about the Club couldn’t possibly do the job within that time frame,

Strachan was ideal appointment, great credit to Dom for holding the review so quickly and for his appointment of Strachan.

I am liking what is happening under Dom, early days, well too early to be going over the top about Ange & the team, but there are definite signs that give cause for cautious optimism.

If we can defend like Dundee United and Malmo did against them and bring in another few good recruits we could have a better than i expected this season . onwards and upwards .

  33. We must get a CH in this week,at the very least.Watching the Huns last night, they reverted to high balls into the box, constantly.Does anyone really think we would have weathered this as well as Malmo did.We need a left sided CH.We need Starfelt on the right.Apart from anything,we have Alkmaar coming up.They are not unbeatable, but for Gods sake, give the team its best chance of doing so.
