City and PSG will be the last new European Champions

242

Last night Manchester City became the ninth UK club to reach the European Cup/Champions League final, where they will face either Real Madrid or Chelsea.  Of those who have reached this stage before them, only Leeds United and Arsenal are without a win in the tournament.

European football was more interesting in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.  Each of those decades saw four (90s), five (60s, 70s) or six (80s) clubs win their very their first European Cup.  That trend of variety has stopped.  Since Paul Lambert lifted the trophy with Borussia Dortmund in 1997 only Chelsea’s name has been added to the new winners’ list.  The football peak seems to have effectively closed to new entrants.

City and last night’s losers, Paris Saint-Germain are the obvious omissions from the list.  The petrodollars pouring into both of them, as well as Chelsea, makes their ascent to the top only a matter of time.  If City do not win this season, they will continue to spend until they do.  The same goes for PSG, both will win this decade.

Then, unless Uefa or the European Club Association can find some mettle, the door will finally close on new entrants.  The European Super League may have died but its ghost will live on to haunt aspiring European clubs.

Can you name all 9 European clubs?

  1. From The Herald:-

“FORMER administrators of Rangers are fighting the liquidators of the business who are suing them for £56.8m because they believe they should have conducted a “bonkers” strategy which would “effectively shut the club down for good”.

Details have emerged as Rangers liquidators BDO began court action against the former club administrators Paul Clark and David Whitehouse of Duff and Phelps who have already agreed an estimated £24m settlement after Scotland’s senior law officer the Lord Advocate agreed there was a malicious prosecution in connection with the collapsed club fraud case.”

I wonder if he internally projects the rumours about the bold Roger Milla of Cameroon on to every black player he ever sees. I remember ‘old swivel-hips’ Milla’s age was the talk of the steamie in the world cups in 90 and 94.

What a player, what a smile, what a mover.

I loved that Italia 90 – especially Germany’s heroic semi-final victory on penalties over the spawny mob who had defeated the Indomitable Lions in the quarters.

I especially hate the snidey stuff about homelessness, mental illness, sexuality etc – boorish ignorance.

Comments can be ascerbic and caustic – but there’s a skill in not tipping into abuse imo.

  13. I honestly see no merit in announcing a new manager until the season is over.

There is nothing he can influence – the season is dead. What he has to do in preparation can probably be done at arm’s length at the moment- maybe that is indeed what’s happening. If he was in situ without being media-involved, all sorts of stories would circulate.

Dominic McKay is also keeping a low media profile, which again I understand. He is not being pursued and there is no malicious media gossip – we should be happy with that.

There is a massive job to be done – all at Celtic Park will know this – have we the wherewithal to do it very quickly?… only time will tell. I am neither opTIMistic, nor pessimistic.

I believe this relates to the sale of rangers as a job lot to Charles G. if you recall at the time the administrators called for bids to pay off creditors and bring rangers out of administration, this was the only call for competition they publicised to bidders, to my recollection. Charles G provided a bid of around 5m offer to creditors, but he also noted a (unrequested) variant on his bid. In the event that no bids were accepted he offered to buy the assets of rangers (including the stadium etc.) for 5m.

The creditors turned down all the penny in the pound offers to bring the company out of administration, and the administrators accepted CG’s variant bid to buy the assets. In effect, it may appear that CG bid on something that was never put up for competition, and the administrators accepted it without seeking other bids.

Again, if you recall, I think around 8 months later CG prepared a share issue to raise new capital, wherein the stadium alone was valued at around 40m. You can do (and probably have done) the maths, the liquidators certainly have.

I am getting a 404 on it now too but I read it all earlier today.

I went back to the existing links on NewsNow, including the Glasgow Live site and I am getting 404 from there too.

Can’t understand why it was withdrawn from sight so quickly. (Is it deemed political during an election?)

My first reading of it was that Celtic had made the FOI request but what was provided seemed to show that the Govt. had sought assurances that Celtic would respect their bubble in Dubai. The photo of Neil and Scott drinking in company at the pool would appear to have given them ample justification.

But, apart from the Dubai correspondence, we got a lot of exchanged letters and e mails about the 2 Celtic players who were quarantined after international duty. I could not discern any bombshells in them

  26. One man’s abuse is another man’s banter – they say.

But I know of several posters who have given up engaging on here because of the personal stuff. Not just personal stuff directed at them, but the tedium & negativity in reading pages of bitterness between to allegedly Celtic fans & usually over nonsense.

I disagree with great many posts but over the years have seen the futility of lengthy exchanges that just morph into stand offs or pedantic definitions of pronouns or demands to bac up opinions with facts.

I have read virtually every leader Paul has posted for the last 16 years & I have NEVER seen one personal insult to any poster – EVER.

Paul’s politics are his “business” & if he chooses to reflect some of his views on here, particularly as they affect Celtic or his real business then he, above all others, surely has that right.

Further, Paul hasn’t restricted the freedom of others to voice their own differing political/economic views on the blog, nor has he engaged in any genuine dialogue with individual posters over any differences they may have.

I don’t always agree with his leaders but accept that others may well do, so usually just let it all play out in these pages. Usually, but not always, a consensus is arrived at that is balanced – unless it becomes personal.

There was a time (perhaps still is occasionally) when posters would come back on the following day & make peace with those whom they they had offended.

James Forrest the blogger has been posting on here for at least 11 years by my reckoning. He is often abrasive but seems to reserve particular bile for Paul67 & his leaders. I have been offended for Paul by some of his comments & I’ve been amazed at the restraint he has shown.

The one quality that is too often missing on here is respect. Some will scoff at that, but that statement is just my opinion. Some of us hold opinions that have become so ingrained that they have become part of our culture. A challenge to our personal culture will often trigger personal responses.

The price I pay for mostly lurking on here is that I rarely share my opinions. I know that I would be subjected to vitriol & personal abuse for daring to hold opinions that would likely unsettle others, no matter how reasonably I express them.

I conduct my own little cost benefit analysis when on here. If it starts to go off the rails & negativity predominates then I check out. If it’s not making me feel rewarded in some way, why would I endure it any longer.

This blog is like our club – it is only ostensibly open to all. Both are the worse for being so.
