City Council plans to eliminate fans and the poor

223

A fan-led petition to persuade Glasgow City Council to drop plans to eliminate parking within a mile of Celtic Park on match days is open.  Tenement housing in this area of Parkhead was cleared in recent times and the Council hope to sell vacant land for more expensive housing, without the match day parking that has been a feature of Parkhead for over 130 years.

This is a well-worn and shameful path.  Cities move poor families out of their housing, destroy whatever could inhibit their ability to attract top price from property developers, then move more affluent residents in.

Match day parking will remain, but it will be moved to areas where the Council are not hoping to sell land.  The problem will be compounded, as fans will have to arrive earlier and leave the area later, as the closest will have a 1-mile walk, while the farthest away could easily walk twice that distance to reach the stadium.  Public transport options remain possible for only a few hundred people, nowhere near the 60,000 required.

In a crowded field of appalling political decisions, this stands out as it was home-grown in Glasgow.  Please sign the petition here to demand the Council think again.

  1. SOT – Much the same here. We have a neighbour in the national police. They think the lockdown will go on until end of April. Relaxation of it will be slow and they expect to have to reimpose it along the way as flare ups occur.

    Stay safe!

  2. From Spanish sports newspaper La Marca:

    Bundesliga to resume in May

Borussia Dortmund to return to training on Monday

Whether it is popular or not, the Bundesliga already have a plan on how they will finish the German top-flight season, and the idea is to resume action in May without any crowds present at fixtures. The first and second divisions in the German footballing pyramid have established clear plans which depend on the public health situation.

They will restart play on either May 2 or May 9, and there will not be any supporters in attendance. The 36 professional teams in Germany concluded that given the nation’s health situation, which isn’t as serious as Spain’s, the football season could be resumed without fans. From there the matches would be played continuously throughout the month of May until the end of June, include the weekends that have been set for the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin. On April 17 there will be another meeting between representatives of all 36 teams, as they look to continue to give off a feeling of control over the current situation.

  3. Reading about Wimbledon being cancelled this year.

Tennis seems to me to be a prime candidate for closed doors given the distances between only two players.

If tennis can’t do closed door matches, I can’t see any hope for football doing so.

  4. The problem with closed door games is fans will be tempted to turn up in numbers outside the stadium as happened in Italy, Germany and I think France a few weeks ago. I know they could say people will get fined etc, but it’s policeing such a thing..

Morning all. Petition signed and a few bucks chipped in.

Hope everyone stays safe and well.

Re our Keystone Cops govt and Covid-19 ….

The penny has belatedly dropped on the value of testing.

In the same way the pennies belatedly dropped on ventilator capacity and the stupidity of a herd immunity strategy.

    A completely incompetent shower.

PS – we should not forget the sacrifice of four doctors who have now died, the first three of which were born outside the UK. (did you get that Priti?)

Unbelievable commitment and ongoing exposure to risk by our nurses and other NHS staff earning less than £25,600 per annum – the suggested threshold for “low skilled” workers applying for visas (did you get that Priti?)

There’s the nugget. Where do these folk come from?

Germany is around five days behind the UK, which is about a week behind Spain.

The virus moves through populations in the same pattern irrespective of language spoken or passport held. Every country is pretty much on the same track, it’s just a matter of timing. Germany’s lockdown was enforced relatively one day before Spain’s, and that may save some souls, but not many. The virus will run its course. Like everywhere else, they were too late to act.

In all probability, in two weeks time Germany will have similar numbers to Spain. France will be there this weekend.

For the UK, particularly in London and the major cities, next week will be like an extract from Pepys.

Whatever your plans for the coming days, stay at home. Don’t find yourself or your loved ones becoming unwell next week at the very time that hospital capacity is overrun.

    An Dun,

I think the issue for Wimbledon is that players would not be able to travel to England for the grass court season….which starts end May?

Prize money is also generated in part by the attendance figures which are huge.

Wimbledon apparently has full insurance for the event of the cancelation ( covers any up-front costs) which they have been taking out for a number of years…a bit of far sighted admin.

Honestly don’t know how you can attribute blame to China. A Chinese doctor – who died tragically – alerted the world to a coming pandemic on social media last December. Chinese researchers reported the virus to the WHO on 31st January. This ought to have bought western nations some time.

Very reluctant to point fingers right now. Nothing to be gained. It will all come out in the wash in the months and years to come.

  15. Fritzsong

This blog is full of finger pointing regarding the performance of our government in this crisis, and I have no problem with that.

China is the source of the pandemic and we shouldn’t forget that.

In what way is China the culprit?

  17. This is why the Chinese are to blame…

“Terrified dogs and cats crammed into rusty cages. Bats and scorpions offered for sale as traditional medicine. Rabbits and ducks slaughtered and skinned side by side on a stone floor covered with blood, filth, and animal remains.

Those were the deeply troubling scenes yesterday as China celebrated its ‘victory’ over the coronavirus by reopening squalid meat markets of the type that started the pandemic three months ago, with no apparent attempt to raise hygiene standards to prevent a future outbreak”

TBB – agree that the statement from German football is, at best, insensitive and, at worst, crass.

That said, perhaps we shouldn’t conflate it with the German nation’s response to Covid-19.

In short, they are the only western nation doing something anywhere near right.

Huge number of reported cases (due in part to them actually TESTING)

    – using the data to inform next phases of treatment

    – including acute care and ventilator deployment

    – fewer deaths, more recoveries

Fairly steady mortality rate (total cases/deaths) of around 1.3%.

UK’s is 8% of reported cases.

Fairly steady Mortality to Recovery ratio of 1:20

UK’s is 18:1 !!! – but, again, based on reported cases which are undoubtedly lower than actuals because we are not testing.

  21. A global pandemic has been expected for years. It was only a matter of time before it happened.

Warnings have been ignored and there have been no adequate preparations put in place.

Hence the lack of a coordinated response leading to the uncontrolled, rapid spread.

Hence the need to find a culprit to blame. To divert attention.

    The stupid fall for it.

If anyone is seriously interested in the culpability of China in this global pandemic , then watch this originally broadcast on Feb. 24 .Recorded I don`t know when .

Produced by the far from right wing ABC in Australia .

Not for any party political or ideological reasons . This is a far too serious an issue to be sullied by petty politics.

The reason. Find the source of the outbreak and the cause and in that way we MAY be able to prevent a recurrence .

Although virus mutation may well scupper that .

    Not pleasant viewing .

  23. SoT, yesterday Mrs Apricale was talking to someone in our village, who mentioned a couple who had just arrived in the village that morning: they left Milano at 3.30 and drove through the night to get here. They are both from Milan, although one has residence here. It looks very much like they just wanted to spend a few days away from the big city, and drove at night to avoid controls. My wife called the Carabinieri and the local Mayor – they didn’t want to know.

There are still a too many people who think that the restrictions are just rules, rules to be avoided like wearing a seat belt or not drinking too much before you drive. In other words, don’t get caught. My wife has already lost 2 familiy members to COVID-19 (not close members).

Ernie Lynch, beginning in 2011 (with subsequent modifications) the UK Government and devolved administrations did make preparations for pandemic flu, see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pandemic-flu and https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/responding-to-a-uk-flu-pandemic

This is of course different to coronavirus (vaccines exist for flu, for example), but many of the practical plans would have been based on actions described in these documents. How much it has been followed, I wouldn’t like to judge (“Key Healthcare Delivery…Detection, diagnosis and reporting of early cases through testing and contact tracing..). I am very surprised they have not been more visible.
