CITY HONOURS LISBON LIONS

1

THE Lisbon Lions were presented with The Loving Cup at the Lord Provost Awards in Glasgow yesterday.

The VIP event, held at City Chambers, honoured Glasgow’s finest – from celebrities to unsung heroes – and this year, that included a tribute to the Celtic greats.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the club’s historic European Cup win – when they became the first British team to lift the trophy by defeating Inter Milan 2-1 in the Portuguese capital on May 25, 1967.

The Lord Provost called the players “great sporting ambassadors for the city” and said their achievement was still a huge source of pride.

Jim Craig, right-back of the Hoops’ greatest-ever side, said: “We are delighted to receive this honour from the city.

“It was totally unexpected, but we are really happy to receive it.

“Glasgow has such a dear place in all our hearts and the people of the city have always been so kind to us.

“It is very humbling therefore to be recognised in this way and we sincerely thank the Lord Provost for this gesture.”
