CELTIC 5 RANGERS 1 January 3 1966
JOCK STEIN stared at his assembled players in the Parkhead dressing room and growled: “This game is more important than any Cup Final. This is the league championship. Win this one and they’ll never catch us.”
It was half-time in the traditional turn-of-the-year Old Firm fixture and Celtic were trailing to a 90-second goal from Rangers winger Davy Wilson.
A victory would lift one of the Glasgow rivals to a two-point advantage.
“Get out there and get the job done,” the legendary Celtic manager roared as his players headed down the tunnel for an eventful 45 minutes.
John ‘Yogi’ Hughes had been finding it difficult to maintain his balance on the tricky underfoot conditions and changed his boots for a pair of trainers. The transformation was startling.
The giant outside-left got into his stride and destroyed the Ibrox rearguard. Stevie Chalmers thundered a hat-trick behind Billy Ritchie while Bobby Murdoch and Charlie Gallagher added long-range drives.
The title was on its way.
