I get that if VAR did not have clear evidence that the referee’s made a mistake, they have no scope to overturn an on-field decision, but I thought the ball had gone out of play before Alistair Johnston crossed for Daizen Maeda late in the game at Easter Road. I cannot get exercised over the apparently inappropriate intervention.
An away game after an away European game remains statistically the time a team are most likely to drop points. These circumstances significantly explain why Hibs took all three points against the champions on Saturday. Celtic were poor in the first half. They improved in the second period when Daizen replaced Adam Idah through the middle, but it was all too late.
Last night news broke that Philippe Clement was to be sacked across the city hours before the deed was officially confirmed. It is classless to allow a manager’s sacking to leak like this.
Information is currency and info that Clement was to be sacked is worth a lot of currency to a board member, trying to earn enough support from the media to leverage later. Last week more news leaked from Newco, about a potential new US investor. That leak did not land well with the investor, who had not made their key personnel aware of the prospective action. But the leaker earned currency with the recipient of the news.
This is chronically dysfunctional and consistent with everything we know about Newco, especially their relationship with the media. You can expect to read positive spins on the club’s plans as a consequence, with the interests of the leaker boosted in particular. It’s all cosplay, the real world is unaffected.
In his 16 months in charge, Clement won the League Cup Celtic had been eliminated from before he was appointed. Celtic won the three other trophies awarded during his time, enjoy a 13-point lead in the league and alongside Queen’s Park, are the only Glasgow clubs in the Scottish Cup. Despite this lack of success, interim-CEO John Bennett awarded Clement a new four year contract in August. A the time, this appeared rash. Looking back, it was clearly another example of inept management at Ibrox.
On Clement’s appointment in October 2023, Bennett said, “A team led by our [then]CEO James Bisgrove, members of the board, and former Rangers player and manager Graeme Souness, has spent the last 10 days interviewing several high calibre candidates, with those individuals undergoing a rigorous interview and vetting process.”
I would like to offer a sincere thanks to Graeme for his role in the fiasco over the last 16 months and hope he is back at the table in the weeks to come. The only cloud on our horizon is the reported prospect of Barry Ferguson being appointed interim manager across the city. This could easily lead to a permanent appointment, with Ferguson exerting pressure on Brendan Rodgers next season. Let’s hope Graeme can convince the board to look at a different candidate.

Good Morning Fholks – Grand Day To Be A Tim.
Aberdeen at Celtic Park, should be a very physical game, looking forward to it.
BURNLEY78 @ 8:56 PM,
“I guess our much maligned domestic rivals have gone a round further than us in their European competition this year. Indeed they are still in it. They have also amassed a far higher co efficient than us over the past 5 years. Maybe when we have something even resembling Olympiakos or Bodo or Red Star or Zagreb as a coefficient we can be shouting about it. One season with an easy draw is progress. Maybe 2 or 3 is worth shouting about.”
Not sure why you have to cherry pick “facts” that down Celtic and up our much maligned foes.
It’s an odd way for a Celtic Uber Fan to behave.
As someone who has little interest in the old firm, I don’t see R2ngers as our competition especially this season, where they didn’t compete in anything other than the League Cup – which we won btw, and if they are much maligned it’s not by me, and maybe they brought it on themselves.
FACTS around the co-eff last four seasons…
Celtic 03, 06, 06, 07, 16
R2ngers 15, 19, 04, 14, 15.25
You can see quite clearly when R2ngers were in the UCL they collected a not so impressive 4 points.
In European terms, they are literally in a different League from us.
Celtic’s very poor showing of 20/21 will drop off after next season, it will be replaced by Celtic’s unparalleled 16 points amassed this season.
We replaced the Manager and CEO from the 20/21 season and we have seen our co-eff improve because we have a better Executive and better Manager and Staff.
Last season, which was a transition season, we managed 7 points under Brendan Rodgers, more than either Lenny or Ange got for us.
In other words our co-eff failure is yesterday’s problem – today we talk of co-eff success.
Many of the people and strategies that led to our co-eff failure have thankfully now gone from having serious input, we are a much more ambitious Club now.
Some of course Uber Fans have been slagging BR&CO’s recruitment – troubled with Brendan’s “eye for a player”
Engels – 11 mn
Jota – 9 mn
Idah – 8.5 mn
Trusty – 6 mn
Bernardo – 3.5 mn
Kuhn – 2.8 mn
Sinisalo – 1.0 mn
McCowan – 1.0 mn
Schmeichel – Free
Jeffrey Schlupp – Loan
Keiran Tierney- Pre-contract
We have brought in ten players since Brendan’s increased input in the recruitment took place over a year ago now.
Here’s a challenge to the naysaying Uber Fans, tell me ten in a row player recruits that come even close to that.
While on the subject of the Uber Fan…
“I cannot get exercised over the apparently inappropriate intervention.”
I did get exercised over this cheating, very exercised… I thought Brendan Rodgers and Alistair Johnston handled the questions around this issue very well at yesterday’s pressers.
VAR had absolutely no right to referee this game or any other game – the on field referee MUST make those calls, that’s enshrined in the rules of Association Football.

Wee Bawwy has all his handpicked coaches in place……..but seems to have overlooked the post of interpreter for his team talks.
Good morning CQN.
The sun is fighting through the clouds.
The coffee tastes wonderful.
Great times. Blessings should be counted.
Enjoyable, and often hilarious, read back of last night’s posts.
The wit and ingenuity of Celtic cyberspace never ceases to delight.
I’ll park the “four lads were a nightmare” stuff for a bit.
Game day.
Bring it on.
CHAIRBHOY
It was a very strange take on the incident. One that if the club mirrored, would only act to encourage further repeats.
Good morning B78 , I’m going to ask you straight ,what is your agenda here? Can you tell us please, you’ve went from scathing criticism of anyone who said anything negative about Celtic to Mr Doom and Gloom .Seems to me your negativity is usually directed to our manager. Why ? R2ngers have done well in the Europa league,it would be churlish to suggest otherwise, but look at their only ever season in the Champions League officially the worst ever in the previous format. Most of the other clubs you refer to have also gathered coefficient points in the lesser tournaments , you are very knowledgeable on EUFA coefficient matters, is it the case that more coefficient points are going to be awarded for Champions league wins and draws in the future similar to points awarded for golden boot goals? I honestly can’t see why you have negative attitude to Brendan as a manager.
Interim manager Barry Ferguson’s appreciation of what it takes to make Rangers successful outweighs his managerial inexperience, says former Scotland striker Kris Boyd.
Above from the BBC Scotland Gossip Column
Does he mean it’s back to the future, like Jock Wallace of more than 40 years ago? Who was sacked then because his team were 5th in the league and running players up sand dunes until they vomited and then gave lectures of what it means to play ‘fur ra Raaangeeersss’ really didn’t get them far.
I’ll go put on a limb here and state right now this will not be a successful period in Barry’s illustrious managerial career
AN DÚN @ 8:07 AM,
Yes, we know that the “old guard” that CQN leads represent, are cautious of rocking the boat – take it on the chin guys.
So, they don’t tend to get “exercised” over the Scottish Football’s duplicity, seeing it as some sort of occupational hazard.
Yet, even allowing for that the wording is strange.
It was an intervention by VAR wasn’t it?
It was inappropriate under the circumstances that the intervention was subjective and those calls MUST be left to the referee?
So, where does the apparent come from, a very lazy SMSM adverb I’d suggest.
COYBIG

THE HAND OF GOD @ 8:31 AM,
Good post…
Gone from purring endlessly about our Generation of Domination – which was the best times we ever had.*
To the only reason we are doing well is our domestic and European opposition are so darn poor.
Go figure!?
* Eclipsing Jock Stein and the Lions.

What a pity that the late, great STANLEY UNWIN is not alive Today.
He would make for the perfect ” INTERPRETER ” of wee Bazzas pep talks to the Hun players.
HH.
For those who have never heard of ” STANLEY UNWIN”.
Stanley Unwin, sometimes billed as Professor Stanley Unwin, was a British comic actor and writer. He invented his own comic language, “Unwinese”, referred to in the film Carry On Regardless as “gobbledygook”. Wikipedia
Born: 7 June 1911, Pretoria, South Africa
Died: 12 January 2002 (age 90 years), Danetre Medical Practice, Daventry.
…..
Maybe some kind soul on here can Post ” LINKS” to Stanley Unwin and his funny appearances on TV and/or in the Film ” Carry On Regardless” ?
Once you see and hear Stanley in ” Full Flow” , you will understand why he would have made a great Interpreter for wee Bazza .
R.I.P. Stanley Unwin,…..as a young Bhoy you made my Granda and me laugh out loud whenever you appeared on TV or Film.

Reassuring to see Kris Boyd and Kirk Broadfoot amongst others being wheeled out to support the staunch appointment of real R2angers men.
It reminds me of the Curious case of Shane Duffy.
I remember reading how he was “a die hard Irish Celtic fan”, bleeds green and white” and “would run through brick walls for Celtic”.
Turns out Shane Duffy was an unmitigated disaster.

Big Jimmy/Bognorbhoy,
Thanks, that’s great. I don’t think I’ve seen him before.
St Stivs,
There was a caller on SSB – the Rangers players should have their chest puffed out when they pull on that blazer 😂😂
Not a mention of the strip…
The Hand of God
Thanks for the feedback. It is appreciated. I have a busy day on work matters but will get back in detail re your co efficient question.
Short answer re the teams mentioned is that it is a mix of sources for them. Some CL and some Europa. Shakhtar Salzburg Copenhagen and Zagreb are more like us with a mix of CL and Europa. Bodo and Olympiakos are more like rangers with mainly Europa.
Our manager does some good and some bad re our club. Just as some have before. I tend to take a medium to long term view on things. I worry re any individual running things rather than a proper structure controlled without ego in decision making. We have had incredible times at Celtic this past 25 years or so. I want this to continue for another 25 years and not end up in a car crash like Advocaat / Murray influenced at rangers.
The facts on Europe are really clear. We did not get to the last 16 despite an easy draw and a well funded squad. Only WGS twice and Lenny have done this as managers. We are highly unlikely to get as good an opportunity as we had for some time but it is not impossible.
None of that takes away from a really great performance, in defeat, last Tuesday and the previous Wednesday and great progress in playing style. The manager and players deserve real credit for that.
Chairbhoy
You seem very thin skinned in your failure to accept any criticism of our manager and indeed appear to have become aggressive of late about it. Just an observation.
As for VAR and your ramblings about old school CQN. I don’t understand that really. Paul overall was not so bothered about the performance as it was post European game and felt the ultimate decision of the officials seemed the right one to him. That’s his view. He also commented on the lack of dignity at our city rivals.
Re VAR most CQN folk were with the manager who was clear in his interview as a club we don’t issue statements etc we deal with these things properly which he was happy we were doing. As someone who has sat in Doncaster’s office when a former Celtic CEO was putting Celtics point of view across on phone to the guy I am aware of the level of influence the club seeks to exert to get things done in a balanced and fair way by our authorities.
I think I was clear personally that my own view aligned with this and we need to address the process undertaken by on Saturday by Muir / McLean and have action taken for the future. I don’t think this varies from BR and the Clubs view.
Not sure if that is old
Schools or new school or borstal school but it’s my thoughts.
Stanley Unwin!?
Brilliant Big Jimmy:))))

The
No thin skin here my friend, the Hyde of an Elephant I can assure you…
It’s the duplicity that gets me
Look at my comment…
You will see All the recruits good or ill
You will see five R2ngers Co-effs
You will see five Celtic Co-effs
Just the full facts and the good fholk of CQN can make their own minds up.
POV: People have seen through your “perception” nonsense now.
On officiating
Brendan Rodgers called out the cheating at Tynecastle last season and got a ban for hos troubles.
After the new year R2ngers match, Celtic had Engels and Kuhn do the pressers.
After the weekend cheating BR and AJ called out the cheating and Alistair did thr presser.
Foreign professional and smart footballers showing up Scottish duplicity is the smart way to do it.
There is more than one way to skin a cat…

Yes the old guard stiff upper lip, Jock Stein
“ they can’t chalk them all off “ . They can’t touch my bonus money either, don’t rock the boat.
Hopefully this is only the public face of Celtic, VAR inadequacies exposed again, they chalked a point off, but the supporters are silly if we get riled, as we’ll never get it back.
If the board of directors at Celtic ever get aligned with the support, it’ll be a monumentus day. Apparently we’ll never see all the angles so we have to make do with Alan Muir and all his previous.
BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 11:10 AM,
Well exactly…
It seems that the Celtic support are a wee bit immune to the aul’ Stockholm syndrome, they try to affect us with.
Not so sure I’m overly impressed with big Pedro calling his mate Neil and putting his point of view across either…
If BURNLEY78 was any sort of mate, he would have interrupted the conversation and asked Mr Doncaster to remind Peter that it’s the SFA he wants, not the SPFL…
Hail Hail
As an aside, I think that using last 16 as a yardstick to compare old with new is not now realistic.
Under the old CL format, last 16 only involved 6 games – and you could indeed get lucky if drawn within a relatively weak group.
Under the new format, last 16 will require at least 8 games – and more likely 10 games in our situation – a much tougher challenge.
Celtic definitely made progress this season. Whether the gamble on bigger transfer fees and higher wages is sustainable is a legitimate question – but there is always that £100m in the bank if and when we have to hit the reset button.
On a different topic, I think The Rangers must surely be lining up Bomber Brown as Barry’s language translator and cultural guru?
In England the Refs have ” Smart Watches” that tells them whether the WHOLE Ball has crossed the Goal Line ?
I dont think that the Refs have them in Scotland…or do they ?
Maybe it can be taken further, with Refs using a ” SMART WATCH” that covers the ” WHOLE BY LINE “, which covers the ” Goal Line” from Corner Flag to Corner Flag…If someone can invent such a watch ?
I am sure that someone COULD come up with such a Device ?
HH.
It’s difficult to understand the appointment of an ill-assorted boy band to manage RIFC. Patrick Stewart’s thinking may be: give the moronic fan base the management they want and let them fail and fall out publicly. This might, just might, demonstrate the need for professionalism.
FRITZSONG @ 11:50 AM,
Exactly…
All those ultra smart pundits who have been laying into the R2ngers manager and Sevco Board, now have a chance to prove how easy it is to put Celtic in their box:))))
Any crystal ballers out there….
