Climbing the mountain, confusing perpetrator for victim

396

It wasn’t a glorious performance last night but I’m delighted to be through to the League Cup quarter final nonetheless. Cup games against lower league opposition are there to be won, nothing else. There were a few bright spots: Saidy Janko looks like he has a sound future in the game, while Efe Ambrose seemed to enjoy his role as senior partner in the defence.

While we struggled for an opening, Kris Commons again stepped forward with a crisp strike from outside the box into the corner of the net. He remains the key to a large number of locks. We should have added more before Stefan Johansen grabbed a late goal to tidy things up.

On the way into the game I predicted Aberdeen’s defeat. With winning 8 league games in a row and being clear at the top of the league, every game has been a cup final for them, until last night. A game against lower league opposition is just not the same (see above). Footballers are not robots, so it’s difficult to ‘climb the mountain’ for every game.

How they react to this defeat will be interesting. Last season they won seven games in a row before Dundee took a point from them, heralding an immediate slide in form and the end of their title challenge. They have a trip to Inverness on Saturday to prepare for.

Charles Green’s apparent claim for legal expenses from Newco Rangers is jarring, but far from surprising.

The Rangers Football Club Ltd (formerly Sevco Scotland Ltd), a member club of the SFA, was the vehicle Green used to strike the Sale and Purchase Agreement for (oldco) Rangers’ assets. It is the beneficiary of that deal, not the victim. The alleged victim is the rightful owner of the assets, which may be Sevco 5088 Ltd, (oldco) Rangers creditors, or someone else altogether.

It is no surprise whatsoever that the beneficiary of a deal would be legally obliged to defend the officers who signed the deal on its behalf.

Still, there’s more to this episode than a simple case of alleged wrongdoing. Fans are caught between affection for the football club and anger at what was allegedly done in 2012. By the football club. I wouldn’t want to have to reconcile those emotions.

We have two big games to look forward to in the next week, both at Celtic Park. Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s game. To win the tickets you need to answer the following question:

Who do Celtic play on Saturday?

With its’ daily circulation now under 30,000 it looks like its’ editorial direction has proved a sure-fire loser. If their supporters could not save the erstwhile RFC what made Tony Carlin think an appeal to them would save the Evening Times? I read that its’ original slogan, back in 19th century, was; “Nobody knows Glasgow better!”, might have worked then, doesn’t work now. Maybe “Doomed ah tell ye” might be a better bet..

  2. Kevin Bridges – is this really the best we can come up with? – a parochial chav – not so much the poor man’s Billy Connolly, more the bankrupt brain-dead man’s bankrupt and brain-dead, Billy Connolly – this type of tripe together with stuff like Mountain Goats and the Tank Commander shit, just shows how many in Scotland are stupid without a chance of salvation.

There is all sorts of talk about a merger between the Scotsman & Evening News in Edinburgh and the Herald & Evening Times in Glasgow, am guessing the resignations may be something to do with that.

  6. Caught the beginning and the end of Clyde1’s SSB tonight. Gordon Dalziel started by saying that none of the Ibrox team would get picked if he had both their Squad and ours to choose from.

He finished by stating that Danny Wilson, in his opinion, is a Championship player.

Wilson was on Celtic’s shopping list for the summer but RONNY decided against moving for the player.

It seems that the English based magic hat guy isn’t a big fan either. Oh dear.

How come the MSM guys who read this never ask Mr Magic if he has moved to Scotland. Surely they don’t fear a disappearing act?

Newcastle fans always appreciate fast flowing attacking football. Anyone know how they are doing at the moment?

Watching the All Blacks v Namibia and Nir Bitton must be playing for the All Blacks as the commentator is talking about a metronome in the middle of the field for the All Blacks :-))

canny understand the rolling maul with the defending team unable to get near the guy carrying the ball

  14. The BBC’s blanket coverage of the Sevco game and the subsequent erasing of the result from any news reports would put the North Korean media to shame. Can we now call them Pravda?

If any Kevin Bridges fans have an hour to spare, try to listen to the podcast with Graham Hunter and Kevin.

Its a really good listen , a great mixture of football chat and comedy.

Kevin is a big football fan and talks about his love of Celtic and the game. Great stories about Henke’s autograph and his dad meeting Alex Ferguson.

I can’t do the link for it unfortunately but it is well worth a listen.

Graham Hunter , in my opinion, is the best football journalist from Scotland. His other podcasts with Gordon Strachan and Davie Moyes are very good also but not as funny as the one with Kevin, unsurprisingly.

Haven’t heard that but noticed that the Scotsman’s circulation is worse than the ET, at less than 24,000. Two different companies mind you. The problem for the press in Scotland is that when they cut costs it is invariably journalists who lose their jobs, as is happening in Glasgow right now. The ET must be down to a few staffers now, doubt that they really need an editor now. I would make the ET a freebie, a la the Evening Standard in London, allow adverts for jobs free especially for small firms and companies, and create a bigger market for potential advertisers. Maintain the present direction and oblivion awaits.
