Climbing the mountain, confusing perpetrator for victim

396

It wasn’t a glorious performance last night but I’m delighted to be through to the League Cup quarter final nonetheless. Cup games against lower league opposition are there to be won, nothing else. There were a few bright spots: Saidy Janko looks like he has a sound future in the game, while Efe Ambrose seemed to enjoy his role as senior partner in the defence.

While we struggled for an opening, Kris Commons again stepped forward with a crisp strike from outside the box into the corner of the net. He remains the key to a large number of locks. We should have added more before Stefan Johansen grabbed a late goal to tidy things up.

On the way into the game I predicted Aberdeen’s defeat. With winning 8 league games in a row and being clear at the top of the league, every game has been a cup final for them, until last night. A game against lower league opposition is just not the same (see above). Footballers are not robots, so it’s difficult to ‘climb the mountain’ for every game.

How they react to this defeat will be interesting. Last season they won seven games in a row before Dundee took a point from them, heralding an immediate slide in form and the end of their title challenge. They have a trip to Inverness on Saturday to prepare for.

Charles Green’s apparent claim for legal expenses from Newco Rangers is jarring, but far from surprising.

The Rangers Football Club Ltd (formerly Sevco Scotland Ltd), a member club of the SFA, was the vehicle Green used to strike the Sale and Purchase Agreement for (oldco) Rangers’ assets. It is the beneficiary of that deal, not the victim. The alleged victim is the rightful owner of the assets, which may be Sevco 5088 Ltd, (oldco) Rangers creditors, or someone else altogether.

It is no surprise whatsoever that the beneficiary of a deal would be legally obliged to defend the officers who signed the deal on its behalf.

Still, there’s more to this episode than a simple case of alleged wrongdoing. Fans are caught between affection for the football club and anger at what was allegedly done in 2012. By the football club. I wouldn’t want to have to reconcile those emotions.

We have two big games to look forward to in the next week, both at Celtic Park. Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s game. To win the tickets you need to answer the following question:

Who do Celtic play on Saturday?

Watched a documentary ON RTE ( irish TV station for anyone not familiar with it)

It was called Born Addicted, and it was about junkies and their children, some newly born, some almost teenagers now.

Tragic sad and yet uplifting in ways .many of the parents had such tragic childhoods that we can’t imagine and yet were determined to be better parents to their children and not pass on the cycle of neglect and addiction.

  2. HT-Tragic post earlier, what an ill divided world we live in,2015 and we see kids without the basics,as Cowiebhoy said,i wish we could do more as a group to help out.

There seems to be some speculation that rifc funding greengo in court would deplete rifc coffers substantially ….but, if it’s insurance, surely it will be paid by an insurance company ?

For the same reason, no insurance company would touch them.

    Wee shame.

Would it not be ironic if the spiv Charles Green, the creator and founder owner of his sevco monster, was the guy who took their last 500k and liquidated thus killing his beast.

I didn’t intend to bring such issues to the blog as I very rarely get involved in domestic politics on public forums.

    However :-)

We have too many politicians and too many commentators (here and elsewhere) who discuss poverty and the ‘poor’ when in reality they’re understanding of these issues comes from multi national, multi millionaire media owners.

The sympathy is great and I’m sure that the parents of the children I referred to appreciate it but in reality that won’t fill the holes in the shoes.

A big question with no easy answer.

The poor will always be with us?

I always felt uncomfortable with that.

    It might be true however.

The alternative might involve a radical overhaul of society.

Where that might end up? ??

    And how.

  21. Was on a plane from New York to Houston on Tuesday afternoon. The old Latino couple were watching the coverage of Pope Francis arrival on their IPad. They didn’t seem to mind me watching also. The US coverage has been fantastic and generally very positive. Some of my New York colleagues were particularly pleased, but that may have been due to being allowed to work from home tomorrow due to his visit.

  22. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

    The issue is very simple.

Ensuring assistance goes to those most in need. (Each according etc.etc.)

Achieving that is the difficult part.

    And the divisive part.

That`s what ensures that the political left right divisions remain.

Inbred mistrust and the misunderstanding of intention fuel that fire.

It`s all so avoidable when so many want the same outcome.

    Yeah.I know.

    Pie in the sky.

  23. CIARANS DAD 2 on 25TH SEPTEMBER 2015 2:23 AM

Your New York colleagues would have had to suffer the inevitable gridlock in Manahattan due not only to the Pope’s visit but also due to the UN session.

Today in his address to Congress, among others, Pope Francis mentioned Dorothy Day.

No not Doris Day, although due to the language difficulties and His Holiness’ low key speech, I thought that initially.

I had never heard of it, so I looked her up earlier.

She was a Catholic pacifist and activist and founder of the Catholic Worker publication.

She had an interesting life, fighting the struggle for workers’ rights, often finding herself at odds with the New York Catholic hierarchy. And often finding herself in a odd juxtaposition between her beliefs and her actions.

She is being considered for canonization.

  24. GG,

Thanks, I hadn’t heard all of the speech today, had to do some work so only caught some bits on the news tonight and some of the Internet coverage. CNN and MSNBC seem to have lots of good coverage. Barack Obama and family looked genuinely thrilled to meet him.

Is this how the eu ours of losing the dressing room started?

CELTIC manager Ronny Deila has admitted to facing resistance from some of his players to the demands for improvement he has made of them since joining the club.

The Norwegian revealed he has clashed with every member of his squad at some point and says the response from some of them has disappointed him.

Aidan Nesbitt was handed his debut as a substitute in midweek after impressing Ronny Deila. Picture: SNS

Aidan Nesbitt was handed his debut as a substitute in midweek after impressing Ronny Deila. Picture: SNS

But Deila believes he has now successfully got his message across to the majority of those under his command and is confident Celtic are gradually feeling the benefit of his methods.

“I can’t see one player here who I haven’t had a confrontation with,” said Deila. “But that’s good, because a culture without confrontation is dead. A marriage without confrontation is dead. If you have the same problems all the time, then you have to give up.

“Not everybody has reacted as I would have wanted to these confrontations. But I treat them with respect and I have given everybody a chance and never give up. But sometimes you have to take decisions because this is not a kindergarten, it’s a high performance team and we have to get results, so you don’t have time to wait for everybody all the time.

“Here you have to learn quick and that’s something that has to be in the back of their minds.

“When you have competition for places, you can stretch them and that’s why so many players have been in the team and then been out for a little while but then they are back again and they are improving. So it goes in circles and I think we are slowly going upwards.”

An obvious example of someone who has flourished under the challenges posed by Deila is Nir Bitton. The Israeli midfielder was unable to command a first-team place at the start of last season but has now become one of Celtic’s most valuable and influential performers.

Others have remained out in the cold, such as Anthony Stokes. The Irish forward has made just one starting appearance this season and even remained an unused substitute for Wednesday night’s League Cup tie against Raith Rovers which saw 18-year-old Aidan Nesbitt sent on ahead of him to make his debut.

“With Nir, last year I didn’t understand where I could use him,” reflected Deila. “He was not giving me anything but again we had a very good talk and he understood what I wanted and he started to do it. Now you can see what kind of improvement he has made.

“I accept everyone does mistakes and does good things, but I ask how much do you learn from mistakes?

“If I have to have the same conversation with him five times in five months, then you give up. Those players are finished at Celtic because they can’t handle the way it is going.

“The others are improving and one man can’t afford to stand still. That player might have been good enough at one point but it won’t stay that way. In the dressing room after the game on Wednesday night, I congratulated Aidan Nesbitt on making his debut and then asked him why he had been given it. He said he didn’t know, so I told him it was because he had earned it.

“He had shown enough in training and had also scored four goals in three games for the under-20 team. When you have maybe five players ahead of you in the queue for a place in the team, you have to believe in yourself.

“The younger players now train with us three or four times a week and they are not afraid to be there, they really like to be among the top players and they start to understand ‘I have a chance here’. That’s the culture we are creating and it will come. I know it will come.”

It’s been emotional for us all.

I choke back tears regularly, but I’m not sure how much is caused by my medication regime.
