Climbing the mountain, confusing perpetrator for victim

396

It wasn’t a glorious performance last night but I’m delighted to be through to the League Cup quarter final nonetheless. Cup games against lower league opposition are there to be won, nothing else. There were a few bright spots: Saidy Janko looks like he has a sound future in the game, while Efe Ambrose seemed to enjoy his role as senior partner in the defence.

While we struggled for an opening, Kris Commons again stepped forward with a crisp strike from outside the box into the corner of the net. He remains the key to a large number of locks. We should have added more before Stefan Johansen grabbed a late goal to tidy things up.

On the way into the game I predicted Aberdeen’s defeat. With winning 8 league games in a row and being clear at the top of the league, every game has been a cup final for them, until last night. A game against lower league opposition is just not the same (see above). Footballers are not robots, so it’s difficult to ‘climb the mountain’ for every game.

How they react to this defeat will be interesting. Last season they won seven games in a row before Dundee took a point from them, heralding an immediate slide in form and the end of their title challenge. They have a trip to Inverness on Saturday to prepare for.

Charles Green’s apparent claim for legal expenses from Newco Rangers is jarring, but far from surprising.

The Rangers Football Club Ltd (formerly Sevco Scotland Ltd), a member club of the SFA, was the vehicle Green used to strike the Sale and Purchase Agreement for (oldco) Rangers’ assets. It is the beneficiary of that deal, not the victim. The alleged victim is the rightful owner of the assets, which may be Sevco 5088 Ltd, (oldco) Rangers creditors, or someone else altogether.

It is no surprise whatsoever that the beneficiary of a deal would be legally obliged to defend the officers who signed the deal on its behalf.

Still, there’s more to this episode than a simple case of alleged wrongdoing. Fans are caught between affection for the football club and anger at what was allegedly done in 2012. By the football club. I wouldn’t want to have to reconcile those emotions.

We have two big games to look forward to in the next week, both at Celtic Park. Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s game. To win the tickets you need to answer the following question:

Who do Celtic play on Saturday?

Blackett I think. As they lost their first game, Fenerbahce will be going for a win I reckon. We will need to be on our toes defensively.

  4. Thought Blackett looked decidedly nervous at left back compared to centre half, the bhoy Tierney looks at least settled as a left back.

  5. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Agreed Blackett has looked better at centre half. I just think Fenerbahce will have watched the Malmo games and will target us with long diagonals, which appears to be our weakness, and Blackett offers more arial strength. Just my opinion.

  6. Having seen Tierney and Blackett the former filled me with more confidence at LB. though it was on the basis of precious little time watching them.

Bigger concern is where will our goals come from and who now is our designated penalty taker in the absence of Izzie???

  7. Mulgrew had a couple of balls go over his head in Malmö and he’s 6ft 3.

It’s about the quality of the ball and the positioning of the defender.

I’d probably have Tierney at left back against Fenerbache.

  8. Hunderbirds are Gone on

To be fair I haven’t seen enough of either of them to be sure. Not even sure Ronnie is sure. I think recently he has used the “Pick names out of a bag” selection system for the back four.

  9. Good morning CQNers,

European opposition will give our defence a much sterner test than any Scottish opposition and for that reason I trust Ronny won’t deviate too much from the defence that lined up against Ajax.

  10. Worst comes to worst I’d rather see one of our youngsters learning from his mistakes than another teams player.

  11. Thanks to GG for the transcript of the Pope’s speech to the USA congress yesterday – on reading it I think he make be a CQN lurker….

But there is another temptation which we must especially guard against: the simplistic reductionism which sees only good or evil; or, if you will, the righteous and sinners.

The contemporary world, with its open wounds which affect so many of our brothers and sisters, demands that we confront every form of polarization which would divide it into these two camps.

We know that in the attempt to be freed of the enemy without, we can be tempted to feed the enemy within. To imitate the hatred and violence of tyrants and murderers is the best way to take their place.

Saw your post last night about the wee girl with the holes in her shoe.

I’d like to buy the wee girl a decent pair of shoes.

Is there a any way I could do that?

I could get the money to you asap for the wee one.

You might already have my office email address as we did correspond a few years back.

If not lots of ghuys on here could let you have it or ask Paul67.

It was wet and windy in north Glasgow today but as the rain had stopped at lunch time the children were allowed out to play.

Before going out I told all of them to put their jackets on because it was cold and still damp. Eleven of them hadn’t a jacket with them and it transpired that eight of those eleven didn’t even own a jacket.

After the break one girl was complaining that her feet were wet. I asked her to take off her shoes so that I could put them on the heater to dry. When I looked at the soles, there was a hole the size of a 50p in each shoe.

  14. Does Ronny know what his best back 4 is?

I’d imagine that he would probably pick our more experienced fullbacks and the big signing from Croatia.

That’s incredibly kind and thoughtful of you mate but thankfully the school are in a position that we can do something about it.

Delighted that Olivia got such good news recently I can only imagine how difficult a time it must have been for you all.

Right offski for now, have a great day.

  17. West End of East End on

Lustig was on the bench on Wednesday so he might feature at left back against Fenerbache, but not sure he could play tomorrow and Thursday.

Hamiltontim – I know it’s a sticking plaster solution but if there’s some way to donate could you let us know, hit me hard with those comments. On my way to work I pass 2 schools and I see many children walking to school without coats on, must admit my first thought was it was a fashion statement but now realise how stupid to think that. Filled up reading that…

  18. I would play young Tierney at LB. I have only seen him twice but I have been impressed with him. Hearts first, of course, but with a view to taking Izzaguirre’s place in the Europa League.

I don’t know if the young Croatian is fit for tomorrow. If he isn’t, I would play Efe at CH. He has been very good in the last two games, albeit against limited opposition. I would choose Lustig for RB and Boyatta for the other CH position.

In midfield, I would play Commons, Brown, Bitton and Rogic, leaving Forrest and Griffiths as forwards.

    _________

    Hail Hail Fella.

Like HT, I was delighted for Olivia and all the rest of your family’s good news the other week.

Also, I was blown away with yer offer to come and pick me up and, drive me back from Bobby’s Hootenanny-thingy….God Bless You for that offer…that was a mark of, quality Sir.

I thank you very much for your wonderful gesture though, I’m not as bad as all that seems…thankfully…hopefully, it will stay that way but, who knows how things will be in the future.

The sequence of events regarding me was, I was required to attend hospital last December to have a colonoscopy…which I did but, I didn’t take the preparation thing properly as it was a liquid-mixture that had to be taken to flush out my bowls but…I vomited some of it back up as the taste of the mixture was sickening. So, I had to go through the prep-procedure again in January and, this time it worked…allowing the surgeons to remove the affected area which resulted in me losing a lot of blood so, had to stay in the hospital on the drip, overnight. I was released from hospital the next day being told that everything was ok….the same from my GP a week later informing me that there were no issues…nothing to worry about. That was fine….so, I

moved on happily with peace of mind….my wife has been my rock every step of the way through this as, she works with the NHS and has been of invaluable help…thankfully.

So, myself and my family got on with life as normal and thought nothing of it.

Then, in June….I received a phone-call at home from the Cancer Consultant’s secretary…asking me to attend Monklands hospital the next day re: my bowl operation back in January. I asked what the reason was for that as…I had been given the all-clear from both, the medical team at the hospital and, my own GP that there were no issues.

The secretary told me that she couldn’t discuss this with me over the phone and that I must attend the hospital the next day. So, of course I went there with my wife who knew that something was up. She was correct, the Consultant explained that, the tumour removed from my bowels was cancerous…was the size of a mushroom.

The tumour had been removed…sent to Dundee to be examined by a group of expert professors in that field and was found to be cancerous. Thing is…this information had been lying on a Consultants desk since March…three months after the operation and, four months later I was informed about it. Thankfully the cancer hadn’t spread as, that’s what the Consultant had feared so, the next month was crammed with more tests, scans, examinations then, the stress of waiting for the results. The Consultant had feared that the cancer had spread to my lungs and liver…thankfully it hadn’t,

But, the Consultant told me not to think that I was home and dry as, the cancer was only in remission and, that they’d be keeping a close eye on me and bringing me back for regular check-ups….every six months I think.

The Consultant told me that, as I don’t smoke or drink that that would give me a better chance.

    We’ll see.

I’ve had some aches and pains from the start of the year and, during the period of ‘not knowing’ I was trying to join the dots and, for example, I’ve been given strong, really strong medication for neuralgia, arthritis and, painful hip-joints and subsequent examinations have ruled that these aches and pains arent related to the cancer stuff…thankfully….that’s all down to being auld n crabbit:)

Anyway, and more importantly….Olivia is on the side of good. It’s important that you know that, everybody on here and their families will be praying that it stays that way.

Re: Bobby’s Hootenanny…I’m trying to get some stuff organised behind the scenes to make it possible for me to attend. If Olivia could make it, that would be a grand occasion indeed.

I don’t want to sound defeatist but…for all I know…this could be the last chance that I get to meet some of the world’s greatest ever fholk!

I’ll have to try and get Bobby’s e-mail info from him as, I don’t know how to do those things when my son isn’t here…old fogie – CSC

Anyway…may God Bless All Celtic supporters.

    …..off oot. YNWA.

  21. Went to Adams Park to see the young Bhoys play Benfica B last evening.

Wonderful night, meeting some Tim’s I hadn’t seen in ages, some Wycombe Bhoy’s who like their Football, some Tim’s I’d never met before and the usual suspects together, it happens so rarely these days and of course my Daughter for the tickets and my boys for coming along.

It really makes me so jealous of you ghuys who can make Football a family occasion in a regular basis.

Great seeing the Hun Skelper General in such good form after such a serious health scare (thanks to all those who prayed for him, he was especially made up by the top the GB sent him:-)

I wasn’t expecting much, with so many of the U21’s out on loan and around the League Cup first team – but the Benfica boys looked a class above.

Still nice to get a look at some future prospects like Calvin and Aiden.

To my amateur eyes, the young bhoys seem to be struggling with the system as much as the first team.

    Still, worth persisting with IMO.

SETTING FREE THE BEARS @ 8:50 AM,

I think you need to put PeteC’s comments in context, for me he seems a very devout Religious man but he isn’t Catholic.

Different Christian denominations have different approaches to the Scriptures.

For me, albeit a non practising Catholic, the Pauline writings have been upper most in the Church, I.e. The writings of St Paul and St Luke.

Even when the Gospel is read out in Mass it is often put into a contemporary context in the Homily.

I certainly see no reason why the Pope should read Scripture to the U.S. Congress, or why he would need to reference it.

I believe he would have been aware of his Bible Studies when he was doing Seminary 101 stuff.

    Just~a~thot

BTW GG – Thanks for posting.

It’s heartbreaking to read such a tale but sadly it’s all too common. For many of our young people the classroom is the only constant in their life that is safe, secure and nurturing. Keep applying the ‘plasters’ mhate you do make a difference.

I would be delighted to help in any way, just let me know.

I will ask Paul67 to let you have my work email (my laptop at home is goosed)

You have had rotten luck with the NHS but hopefully they have got their act together and you will continue to stay healthy and recover completely.

It is very kind of you to remember Olivia when you have so much going on in your life and believe me, the wee one appreciates it very much. She sailed through the whole thing thankfully, however, I must report that my hitherto good looks have started to fade due to worry and lack of sleep!!!

I will continue to remember you in my prayers and hope your recovery continues apace.

I hope one way or another you manage to get to the Hoot as it would be great to meet you.

Take care and God bless and keep posting.
