Clowns falsifying the Rules

423

As recently as December, Sky Sports contributor and very, very, lapsed Celtic fan, Neil McCann, accused John Guidetti of cheating while simultaneously acknowledging that the player didn’t claim for the penalty McCann thought he didn’t deserve. The mental contortions required to allow McCann to accuse a Celtic player of cheating, while not cheating, was worthy of awe.

Yesterday the same open sore was evident. Craig Gordon fouled Jackson Irvine 23 yards off his line, to the side of the field. Virgil van Dijk was back inside the six yard line with other Celtic players storming back.

McCann waxed lyrical that the Celtic goalkeeper should have been ordered off, claiming “The new rules are simple. Is the Ross County player being denied a goal scoring opportunity?”

He’s half right, the Rules of the Game are clear, they note three sending off offenses for fouls:

Serious foul play
Violent conduct
Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity

Referee guidance on the third offense is crystal clear; denying a possible goal scoring opportunity is not a sending off offense. Referees are only allowed to show the red card when an obvious opportunity has been denied.

Jackson Irvine could get an early shot off with his left foot (he’s right footed) but it would need to be a spectacular effort from a tight angle. The potential chance was never an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The yellow card decision was correct. These are the Rules of the Game and the guidance referees are given.

The only thing you need to know about yesterday is that if you have a career in the football media, and before you cite the Rules of the Game, you’d better read them. Otherwise you might appear to be a bitter clown who falsifies the rules to suit an agenda.

Not that anyone on here is bothered but Tomás O’Leary aint from Tipperary. He is Cork like myself, his father Seanie was a legendry Cork hurler and Tomás was a great prospect as a teenager but was tempted by professional contract (who wouldn’t) and switched to Rugby.

Who was from Tipperary and an absolute star hurler in the making was Shane Long, the two Hunt brothers from Waterford Noel & Stephen were good underage hurlers as well. Niall Quinn played for Dublin in All Ireland Minor Hurling Final, I was actually at the game as Cork were playing in the Senior Final the same day. No winners medal for Niall as they lost to Galway.

I saw the penalty Hearts got earlier when one was of their players was brought down by the St Johnstone goalie.

Was there a clamour to have the goalie sent off for preventing a goal scoring opportunity?

McCann and Tanner very rarely say anything positive about us . I would love to ignore both wee nyaffs but they emphasise so much on things that go in our favour.

I don’t believe they made the same hoo ha about Davies pulling Virgil’s shirt twice, in clear sight of Collum, in the second half nor Foster bringing down Scepovic.

Scepovic wasn’t very effective yesterday but at least his one attempt at goal was on target when he had no one in the box to aim for.

The Picadilly Bar in the Old Town usually has the games on, if not, there are about 10 others in the same street/lane who will be showing most of the games during the week, they usually have what games they have on written on a chalk board outside. There is also an “Irish bar” in the same street/lane upstairs from the Hotel California entrance in the shopping centre. As others have mentioned, if you are up on the Strip, Jinkys will have it on.

Try and ignore Tanner & McCann….. As you posted not a word said about the St Jo goalie, by the way I thought both were yellow cards and even Willie Collum got one decision correct, I wish he was my teacher the wee clown could never try and correct my work, he is incompetent the bigot Kirk Broadfoots penalty at Celtic park must be one of the worst decisions I have ever saw, Collum had his back to it ! And face the old jungle there was no flag face the faraway linesman so the cheat gave the penalty on presumption that a foul was committed …. Cheat

Corkcelt, your post about a sense of entitlement struck a cord with me.

I don’t like the way EPL luvvies in the media along with EPL fans look down their nose at us and Scottish football . That’s why I very rarely act in a similar manner to other Scottish clubs with one obvious exception.

Anton Rogan was another who played GAA and preferred it to football. He moved to football as he could make a living from football but not GAA.

Welcome to this hallowed site. No, honest.

McCann does not need to admit to his EBT it is now part of the public record.

Thus far the authorities have classed it as a loan, ie not earnings. A £500,000 loan!

Anybody know offhand his anonymised title in FTT hearing, was it Mr. Puce perchance?

Going by EPL prices, that’s about 4m light. I certainly don’t want to lose Virgil while there’s a chance of CL qualification. If and when he goes I hope there is a decent replacement lined up, although the thought of going into a CL group with 2 new CB’s would be far from ideal.

Gerryfaethebrig, I’m so glad I ditched Sky Sports three years ago.

Tanner , McCann and Walker were driving me bonkers with their mince about us.

If they had put as much emphasis on favorable decisions other teams got , I wouldn’t have got so het up about them.

Tanner only got the gig as he was pally with Jim White when both worked at STV together.

Tanner and McCann are nae use nuthins fae nae where that know hee haw about hee haw.

I was in the Vodafone shop in Sauchiehall Street a few years ago. Tanner came in and came over as a complete dunderheid. He couldn’t get his phone switched off and the Vodafone guy got it switched off at the first attempt.

I had a wee chortle as I went by the wee nyaff when I left the shop.

  20. If reports of the Southampton bid are correct that will be the boards fall back option should we fail to win on Wednesday. Big Virgil will be very quickly sold to the highest bidder.

Packie was never a fav of mine, up himself comes to mind when I think back.

Myself and my 2 brothers had season tickets just behind Celtic dugout in main stand right next to the tunnel. Every week we would get autographes off the players as they came out for the warm up. Every week Packie would never sign an autograph always using the excuse that he couldn’t write with his gloves on.

We all laughed when my brother Tony shouted “take them fucking aff then ya prick” after 2 years of hearing the same excuse.

Saw mention of some classic films on the ol’ box, don’t know if it is the ol’ sky box mind you. If you can’t find ‘The Searchers’, you can certainly look out for ‘The Guard’ on C4 at 11.05. Forget MOTD when Brendan Gleeson is on the other side!

Bow to your judgement about Tomas O’Leary and Cork.

As for Shane Long, a Baggies fan told me all the new players had to sing a song as an initiation ceremony.

He did ‘My Girl’ like a professional singer – he is quite a musician.

Next new player up just said ‘HTF I am supposed to follow that?’

    Dallas Dallas…..

I am 45yrs old, their bias used to annoy me but now I actually revel in their stupidity, I totally understand people earning a crust but it is laughable the lengths they go too to appease their audience, I love it…… By the way I would hate any ex-Celtic player just to say good things about us because they played with us, I loved big Sutton, but in Ronny’s early days I think the big man was totally out of order, he has brought it back a touch but there is no way I want an ex-player to say good things just because he played for us but also appreciate the legend Tommy Boyd who actually just says it as it is……honesty is always the best policy, by the way young Mark Wilson is pretty good on the radio as well, although like Tommy Boyd I wish my fellow St Ambrose bhoy to get another contract as he is only 31 and still got a bit to offer
