Club 9, selling empire and Rangers European Champions 1967

628

Club 9 Sports released a priceless statement tonight indicating they are considering an investment in Rangers only as part of a consortium and will not be bidding for the club on their own.

So far, so clear.  They then entertain us with a remarkable interpretation of liquidation, saying:

“We understand that it has been strongly rumored that our group planned to “liquidate” the club. It should be made clear that any party that attempts to acquire the club, eliminate the debts, affect a turnaround, invest monies and put the club back on solid ground is in fact “saving” the club from liquidation and preserving its past and its future.

“In an asset purchase, all of the good and valuable assets (records, marks, names, trophies, players, staff, history) are preserved and separated from the bad and harmful liabilities (tax bills, bad contracts, creditors), which have put the club into administration and which act to force the entirety into liquidation.”

“Saving” the club from liquidation by putting the entirety into liquidation.  Don’t laugh, they honestly wrote this.

For the record, you can’t sell history or records.  Can you imagine?  Britain could flog off our whole empire period and maybe use the current economic crisis in Greece to buy their classical period from them. Aristotle, from Scotland, perhaps.

Personally, I would love to be the first Briton to hold aloft the European Cup, maybe Billy McNeill would sell me that record?  He’s had it for 45 years now, it can’t be worth that much to him anymore.

I wonder how much Messi would sell his record breaking Champions League history?  Barca are playing catch-up with Real Madrid in the European Champions stakes.  Instead of buying expensive footballers they could just offer Real cash for some of the trophies won during the 1950s.

David Murray should have saved himself all the trouble and just offered our old board a few million for the Lisbon history, just think:

Rangers, European Champions, 1967. Opportunity missed. Murray should have had a word with Club 9.

I’m enjoying these guys already, hope they are given the green light tomorrow.  What terrified Brian Kennedy floats my boat. They even finished off with some sweet platitudes about a “legendary fan base”.  I think we have a winner….

Yeah i’m looking forward to doing that, Nearer the time i will speak to Paul & see if something can be done for the magazine. Yesterday got me thinking…for everyone who has sent me strips i might get their CQN name printed on the back of a shirt for the photos. I think that would be a good way to thank everyone for their help. I’ve been told by the local guy i am dealing with here it will be in the newspapers so will be good to get the good name of Celtic & CQN around Jordan.

Sorry but I can’t agree with either of you.

The reality is if we share our income we have less to spend on better players.

Inferior players will reduce even further our chances of performing well in Europe.

We would be lowering the quality of our squad , and our current competitors would be improving theirs.

The overall standard would not be improved , although it may be a bit more competitive.

Also in my own business several established competitors have actually gone out of business.

    But .

New competitors have come into the market.

One of them is a big hitter who saw an opportunity for a good market share.

Philosophy is all good and well, but in the real world , you have to make things happen for yourself.

    Eg,

Why dont Heart’s improve their scouting network to find the likes of Izzie, Kayal, Wanyama, etc.

These other club’s have not shown enough business acumen.

    As for sporting competition .

    Sport is for amateurs.

This is the business of sport.

    Business acumen is required.

  19. Rebel 10 damaging SPL, claims chairman Ralph Topping

    By Jim Spence

    BBC Scotland

Scottish Premier League chairman Ralph Topping has claimed that two potential sponsors have pulled out because of recent events and bad publicity.

And he has urged the 10 non-Old Firm clubs to withdraw their attempt to change the voting structure, suggesting it is damaging its commercial future.

Three club chairmen have told BBC Scotland they have been angered by Topping’s letter to the 10 clubs.

And they question whether the SPL’s board can now be viewed as impartial.

Both companies have now decided to withdraw their interest in the light of recent developments in the SPL

    Ralph Topping

    SPL chairman

The board arranged a 12 April general meeting after the 10 clubs called for the 11-1 majority for major changes to be reduced to 9-3.

But Rangers’ administrator, Duff & Phelps, has since indicated that it would vote with Celtic to oppose any change.

“Having spoken candidly to Rangers’ administrators, they have made it clear to me that they will not be supporting the members’ requisitioned resolution on 12 April,” said Topping.

“On the basis that it appears likely the resolution will not achieve the 11 votes in favour that it requires and there is now some damage being done to the league’s commercial prospects and, by implication, your own club’s potential future distributions, I would ask you to consider whether you would, especially given current circumstances and uncertainties, wish to withdraw the resolution.

“It would seem to me that progress is far more likely to be made by 12 clubs engaged in debate about the future than by forcing a vote on a resolution that on the face of it has no apparent prospect of success.”

Rangers’ administrator will vote against the change to the voting structure

Topping points out that he would comply with the wishes of the clubs but points out that he has gauged the reaction of the SPL’s broadcast and commercial partners to what he suggests is comment that does not paint Scottish football in a positive light.

“On the commercial front, I am aware of two companies who were strongly attracted to the idea of sponsoring the SPL when Clydesdale Bank’s tenure comes to an end in summer 2013,” he said.

“Both companies were viewed as serious potential bidders for the title rights.

“Unfortunately, both companies have now decided to withdraw their interest in the light of recent developments in the SPL.

“It will not have escaped your notice that Sky and ESPN have so far failed to return draft contracts sent to them in 2011.

“I have spoken to one of our live broadcast partners who is concerned about current uncertainties with Rangers and who at the time of our conversation was anxious to learn more about recent talk of clubs resigning en masse from the SPL.”

The SPL did not wish to respond to the criticism of Topping’s letter by the three club chairmen

  27. Mags, I’m all for free speech too, however, with free speech comes responsibility and accountability otherwise every time you go to the movies and a numptie screams FIRE you can’t say “what a muppet”.

Or if you’re walking down the street and ten neds point at you and scream PEDOPHILE, then what do you do. What do you say.

And when the huns sing BJK for twenty minutes without break then should we applaud their inspired banter?

Canamalar, I know what you are saying and I agree too (I know the literal definition of bigotry), but I also think you are humouring semantic distinction. Like free speech there are responsibilities that come with being a bigot. If you abuse those responsibilities you will go to jail. (Depending on which country you are in and which demographic you are abusing) Or the person you are abusing will just slap you into today. That is my personal favourite.

There are times you can be in the pub and laugh at the ‘banter’ and there are times you can be in the pub and you end up in a fight over the ‘banter’. Why? It is just bigots being bigots and indulging banter after all. Who makes the distinction as to what is acceptable and what is not. Who draws the line?

Now being racially or religiously bigoted, there are only fools that can’t make that distinction.

SPL chiefs rule out any chance of Celtic trophy presentation on Old Firm day

Apr 4 2012 By Gavin Berry

CELTIC won’t be presented with the SPL trophy against Old Firm rivals Rangers despite the derby almost certainly being the Hoops’ first home game after clinching the title.

Neil Lennon’s men face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday and need just a point to secure their first

championship in four years which would wrap it up before the split.

And following the announcement of the post-split fixtures, Celtic then face Motherwell away on Sunday, April 22 followed by the visit of Rangers to Parkhead seven days later.

The Celtic players will be desperate to get their hands on the trophy but they’ll be forced to wait until one of their two other remaining home matches in May.

Lennon’s men host St Johnstone on Thursday May 3 before Hearts visit the east end of Glasgow on the final day on Sunday, May 13.

An SPL spokesperson said: “We’ll make an announcement in due course but Celtic won’t be presented with the SPL trophy at the Old Firm game.

“I don’t think anyone would expect us to present it especially to Celtic after the Old Firm match but we’ll let everyone know soon.”

Saints are the club to suffer this season from an uneven number of home and away games, with the Perth men forced to play 20 away games and 18 at home due to the controversial split.

But SPL secretary Iain Blair said: “St Johnstone are losing a home game but they have gained one in the past.

“Various versions of the round 34-38 fixture list are produced and we select the one that provides the best fit.

“In the regular season, Celtic/Rangers and Hearts/Hibs always play at home on alternate weekends but it can be impossible to avoid a city clash after the split.”
