Cluj, give Jullien a run, Ian Holloway

403

They may have ejected Celtic from the Champions League, but Cluj did not have the look of genuine contenders for the group stage.  They lost 0-1 at home to Slavia Prague last night, with Masopust (no relation) getting the goal.  The Romanians will almost certainly drop to the Europa League.

AIK arrive in Glasgow today smarting from their home defeat on Sunday.  Scouts from both Celtic and AIK will have taken in each other’s games at the weekend, but it is unlikely much of consequence was learned, or at least, I hope AIK learned little about Celtic.

Whatever reasons lay behind Neil Lennon’s team selections at home to Cluj, Boli Bolingoli and Christopher Jullien both have an additional 90 minutes under their belts, so are more likely to make the line-up, especially if concerns remain about Kristofer Ajer’s shoulder injury.  I know this is not a universal feeling, but I want Jullien to be given a run in the team.  We have scouted this player, there is more to come than we have seen.

Ian Holloway’s comments, where he blamed the EU for football’s new handball rule is a perfect metaphor for our time and the entire Brexit debate.  The world is full of clowns who believe simple answers exist to complex problems.  No weight of logic will shift them, and they are not limited to the Brexit loons, football problems are easy to solve, just ask anyone with no experience.

Can Callum McGregor play at right back?

    ====

Genius! Then he can cut inside onto his strongest foot and make a simple pass to Brooney to start the attack.

What could possibly go wrong? ;)

Absolutely, but big Bayo’s reggaeton moves aren’t half bad;)

Clearly we all – you, me, David etc – want the best for the club but many of us, mibby rightly, are fearing the worse as 9 and 10 loom.

    That’s the thing about expectations – they’re resentments-in-waiting.

James Forrest – season 9 in the 10 was always going to be tough, the establishment – and we all know who they represent – will use every dirty trick in the book to destabilise our club, they will accept anyone in their ranks as long as they proper hate Celtic and are willing to demonstrate that by putting the boot in at every opportunity.

IMO you are now amongst their ranks and anything coming from you or your blog can no longer be trusted, and you shouldn’t be coming on here ridiculing Paul, as a fellow blogger that’s well out of order.

We, at the minute, are a shambles.

    We are throwing away 9.

Money in bank burning a hole whilst very short at the back.

Sort it out or you’ll hear/feel the wrath of the support

yes but who or ‘we’ recommended him is the question , do you have the answer.

Impossible as it may sound, its actually worse than that, as the interview stage appears to have been skipped altogether.

We may be lucky and get away with it, but right now huge improvement required from boardroom to dugout to pitch.

Ron – if you mean the name of the actual person within the Celtic Scouting Network who initiated the deal then NO, cant help you there. Not sure why you would want the guy’s actual name when the player himself confirmed he agreed to join Celtic after meeting with Neil in Paris. But hey ho, we’re all different.

  15. Never mind all these malcontents, Pedro.

I’m looking forward to the Super Dooper Light Show against … em, Partick Thistle in the Betfred Cup.

    It will be spectacular!

Mind you, it will probably only be me and a few thousand others who will see it as everyone else will have chucked it because of the complete shambles into which we have been blundered.

What has actually happened to Lennon? Can he really not see it?

The fact that he is accusing the fans of ‘hysteria’ and overreaction would suggest that he is in denial . He isn’t of course , he has no doubt closed ranks with PL and is merely trotting out the party line while desperately hoping that his outward show of confidence settles the players for Thursday.

Everyone and his dug knows how precarious and thoroughly unsatisfactory the situation is.

    Paul,

In this Brexit metaphor are the board the snake-oil merchants belonging to Leave or are they the “establishment” (for want of a better word) who have been asleep at the wheel as political discontent grew amongst the general populace?

Pistol Pete must still be on holiday in Europe.

Looks like old Pedro waiting for the outcome of the next few matches. Nice way to treat your supporters after selling your best asset for such a small amount in real terms. The Celtic way though……..

    Ron 67 – you’re flogging a dead horse mate – give them a call and ask them – 0871 226 1888.

  23. My thoughts on this season so far – yes, there’s hysteria among the support because of last week’s result against Cluj. Too many are exaggerating the state we are currently in.

It was a shocking result caused by bad transfer planning IMO. We had a choice of McGregor, Hayes or Bolingoli (just in the door) for a CL qualifier. That’s not acceptable. Our centre back pairing was poor and our keeper has had a poor start to the season. We weren’t as prepared as we should have been for the most important games of the season. I blame the board for that mainly. Heads should roll, or at the very least there has to be a change in structure so it won’t happen again.

The CL horse has now bolted, unfortunately. £40m gone and an extra £10m up for grabs in the EL. But for the league the problems are fixable. Make the right buys in the next couple of weeks and we’ll be fine. We’re pretty good going forward – just need to add a few to make us more solid defensively.

  24. So much to say, so many questions to ask but what is the point? Our treble treble winning club is doing what it does best – being small-minded, being tight, being overly cautious, being amateurish and taking its support for granted and for fools. Our board are, quite simply, masters of dicking around.

The average tenure of a CEO in a top 500 company is 5 years.

We have had PL for 16 years.

We have much to thank him for. But it is time for new blood at the top. We need someone who can ruthlessly exploit our dominance rather than keep it to its bare minimum.

Sadly, nothing will change, at least not as a result of our views.

  25. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

ROCK TREE BHOY on 21ST AUGUST 2019 3:49 PM

People are complaining because we are run by, frankly, an amateurish board who have little ambition and engage in zero forward planning, led by a CEO whose (basic) wage has increased by circa 500% since he took over.

We have made the same mistakes repeatedly and then produce the same platitudes: about running out of time; CL qualification; blame it all on the EPL etc ad nauseam. However, we can now add Brexit as an excuse, so that’s good.

Etims used Brexit as an excuse today for the potential signing of the Killie players and McKenna (can’t buy foreigners now, you see)- I wonder if Etims and Paul are in league together!

  26. The most important figure at a club like Celtic is the manager.
