Cluj, give Jullien a run, Ian Holloway

403

They may have ejected Celtic from the Champions League, but Cluj did not have the look of genuine contenders for the group stage.  They lost 0-1 at home to Slavia Prague last night, with Masopust (no relation) getting the goal.  The Romanians will almost certainly drop to the Europa League.

AIK arrive in Glasgow today smarting from their home defeat on Sunday.  Scouts from both Celtic and AIK will have taken in each other’s games at the weekend, but it is unlikely much of consequence was learned, or at least, I hope AIK learned little about Celtic.

Whatever reasons lay behind Neil Lennon’s team selections at home to Cluj, Boli Bolingoli and Christopher Jullien both have an additional 90 minutes under their belts, so are more likely to make the line-up, especially if concerns remain about Kristofer Ajer’s shoulder injury.  I know this is not a universal feeling, but I want Jullien to be given a run in the team.  We have scouted this player, there is more to come than we have seen.

Ian Holloway’s comments, where he blamed the EU for football’s new handball rule is a perfect metaphor for our time and the entire Brexit debate.  The world is full of clowns who believe simple answers exist to complex problems.  No weight of logic will shift them, and they are not limited to the Brexit loons, football problems are easy to solve, just ask anyone with no experience.

    Gene….

But if you’re going down that route, then yes there is a general pattern of spending = achievement although obviously there are always exceptions

    —————

Correct – all of the evidence shows that there is a clear correlation between expenditure and success – to attest anything else is to be blind to the obvious.

It is not a 100% direct causal relationship – there is of course variability – but the strong correlation is unarguable.

    Embramike,

Meling looked like a guy playing left back whereas Boli looks as though he’s a winger from the under 14s playing there for the first time. Even when we tried to convert Ross Wallace into a left back he was positionally more attuned than Boli.

Don’t think we will sign Meling until next Friday if at all.

Bet he ends up a multi million pound player or some other club comes in for him down south.

I’ve always wondered how long PL would last in DD’s business empire, not the Celtic networking community he dwells in , looking after a business that looks after itself, check the figures over the last 15 years, champions league money we,re up, no champions league money we,re down , the odd player sale to balance off the books, this guy has brought nothing to Celtic to justify his wage but his wage has gone up from 150,000 to 3,000,000 with bonus he’s one lucky guy

One of Cluj and Slavia plus one of Rosenborg or Zagreb will be in the group stages and we’ve accepted that the Europa League is now our level. Let that sink in.

Yup! And I can tell you , having watched both games , that none of these teams have our talent going forward . The big difference is the solid defending……..no horror shows like we served up last week.

Must be something in the name that wants to spend beyond the means

The annual Government Expenditure and Revenue Scotland (GERS) showed total public spending in Scotland was £75.3 billion in 2018/19 but the country only raised £62.7 billion in revenues.

The 2018/19 report showed the £12.6 billion deficit was the equivalent of more than half the £23.5 billion recorded for the entire UK, despite Scotland having only 8.3 per cent of the population.

This of course is despite the advantageous Barnet formula which Scotland receive

    ———

You’re correct in one respect Gene. GERS is basically made-up financial pishy pie in the sky, the principal intention of which is to substantiate a continuity myth of WATP, North Brit hegemony.

“This club has provided 8 titles in a row”

True, we have won 8 titles. But that doesn’t necessarily dispel the fact that we are not particularly well run in the boardroom. In the same vein, the banks were making record profits right up to the crash; there was an underlying, systemic issue but they were still fantastically successful…for a time.”

I don’t think that the analogy holds up.

During the unregulated Bear market ALL banks were motoring ahead; all of them were winning the league.

Only one team won 8iar. The analogy would only work if RBS had trounced all the other banks and Bank of Scotland had to become a menage.

Is that you disagreeing with the Growth Commission and Nicola again?

In 2018 the SNP, to their credit, tried to be honest with their electoral base and tell the truth about the immediate hardships we would face at the start of the Independence project.

When the backlash came from all the McGlashans in the party, they backtracked but Nicola did not disagree with any of the figures in the GERS report; she just talked up the positive in that the projected deficit is not as severe as was projected a few years back.

But the McGlashans will not let the facts get in the way of a good theory.

Neil Lennon claims not to know how much cash reserves Celtic have.

The accounts state £38.6m cash at the bank on the 31st of December.

Since then we have received £9m for Brendan Rodgers. I expect there to be some deductions in cash for capital investment before the financial year end so let’s call the cash then £45m. This is the figure I expect in the year end published figures after the transfer window is closed.

Since June we have impacted cash again to the positive tune of £13m net. I estimate we have around £57m in the bank today and at least £50m.

Last years accounts and the interims did not contain any narrative that cash would be required for unplanned for events.

I also assume that all revenue costs will be met by income and not by cash reserves.

If Lawwell works tirelessly then his work is not enough to cover the demands of the transfer window on his own.

  18. At the moment our senior defenders include Julien Simunovic Ajer Bitton Hendry Abd Elhamed Bolingoli ralston Calvin Miller and Johnny Hayes. You might add Luca Connell to that group but he is yet to be seen at LB with us.

In the reserves only Kerr McInroy and Stephen Welsh look ready enough.

Given that we are trying to punt Hendry, Ralston is unconvincing and Calvin Miller remains an attacker rather than a convertible left back, we are well short of numbers.

I make that 7 plus 3 youngsters from which to form a back 4 over the next few months. How can anyone seriously think there won’t be defender buying before the window closes? Are we going to play a Calderwood 2:5:3 system?

  19. Should we not just buy Bury ? Or even Bolton ?

  23. The rumour is that Brown and Lennon had a ding dong before the Cluj game over the team selection. The fact that Brown liked a Tweet (accidentally apparently, which i don’t believe, I’ve got Twitter and that never happens to me, so it’s some coincidence) slamming Lenny after the game and then wasn’t involved at all on Saturday adds fuel to the fire. Brown also has issues with Deila and John Collins previously. Hopefully nothing in it but we shall see what the teams is tomorrow.

Ah-ha! The old spurious relationship argument (and I know you are only kidding!!).

Evidential correlation PLUS plausible cause and effect, I should have specified :-)

Famous (but most likely made up) argument made in a southern American coastal town’s newspaper was that there were two facts that were – with excellent and reputable evidence – correlated. The correlation was factually correct as follows:

    – As the number of ants observed during the summer at beachside locations increased…

    – …the number of thefts from cars near the beach increased in line with the observed population of ants.

The hypothesis based on the clear (and factual) correlation was that the ants were a buch of no-good, low-down, scum-bagy thieves.

That the summer period was when:

    1. ants from colonies adjacent to the beach were most active gathering plant debris to feed their pupae, and…

    2. …rising temperature drew more people to the beach…in their cars…which got hot…the impact being that more people left their car windows down slightly…,

…was, of course, immaterial to the hypothesis.

    Dirty thieving ants.

Yeah I’m seriously concerned that we won’t win the league now.

They don’t have to be brilliant or to have moved forward if we are moving backwards … and we very clearly are moving backwards.

There are many, many reasons for my dip in optimism, but top of the list is that the manager seems as if he is out of touch with reality.

That press conference today was another shocker.

    Morning all.

We are not gonna sign a player that could play in tonight’s game.

We are not gonna appoint a new Manager to take charge of the team tonight.

Peter Lawwell, and/or any other Board members are not going to be relieved of their duties before tonight.

We do have a group of players that currently seem to be suffering from a bit of a crisis of confidence.

So can we bury the torches, pikes and pitchforks and get behind the team today and tonight? You never know, it might make them play better. 🤔

If tonight doesn’t go well, I will join everyone and help dig them up again tomorrow, but let’s support our team today. 🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀
