Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv gives Celtic generous draw

258

If Celtic overcome Nomme Kalju in the Champions League second qualifying round, they will face either Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the third qualifier.

Cluj are one of those clubs who will never be taken lightly, after a remarkable win away to Roma in the Champions League nine years ago, but recent times have not been as prosperous.  They lost out in last year’s Europa League qualifiers to Luxembourg’s Dudelange.  In the first qualifying round this season, Cluj recorded an unexpected win against Astana, who are seeded only slightly lower than Celtic.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv went out of the Europa League playoff round last season to Norwegians, Sarpsborg.  This was a poor showing by Maccabi, but there are caveats – the Norwegians were midseason and subsequently put on a decent showing in their Europa group.

Apart from Saturday’s Super Cup, this will be Maccabi Tel-Aviv’s first competitive outing of the season, so you would not bet against Cluj taking down their second seed of the campaign.

There is work to do, but it we cannot reach the payoff round from this draw, we do not deserve to be there.

I am aware of the T&Cs re tickets and have purchased for this match (not in HCTS, as per Hot Smoked – actually, was in it previously, but withdrew because of SFA governance situation). In previous seasons, if ticket was purchased before a certain date, then ST was activated rather than having to obtain a paper ticket from Ticket Office or, indeed, a print at home ticket. Can’t see any reason why this would change.

    Thanks for your assistance.

  4. Ajax v PAOK is a result. We now cannot meet either of them in the play-off round as the winner will be seeded, as will we.

  5. No idea who is the better team, but I dont want the Palestinian thing starting again.Dont think UEFA will be as lenient this time.Would prefer Cluj.

  6. I think Cluj will win that tie.

Not by much, but think they might have the edge over Maccabi Tel Aviv

Poor you. Must have really suffered last time.

I am with you in that I don`t want us fined for showing support for Palestine.

On the other hand, I think it dreadful that UEFA feel they have the right to act as out moral guardians.

  9. This is what I received from Ticket office:

`Any items that are sent via post would be delivered to the following address unless you have chosen another method of delivery:

    Mr James A Barr etc`

  10. Rangers director Stewart Robertson and Hamilton’s Les Gray have been elected to the 2019 SPFL board.

Celtic chief Peter Lawwell and Dundee supremo John Nelms have left their roles while Motherwell’s Alan Burrows retains his place as the three Premiership representatives were finalised.

i scanned that really quickly and the points i picked out were:

    1. huns are cheats

    2. huns tried to limit damages to £1m

    3. SD gets to have full benefit of matching the Hummel/Elite deal

what i wasn’t sure on was:

    1. do SD take over the deal and get damages from Hummel/huns for the shirts sold ?

    2. or do Hummel continue but have to pay SD the profits and then take it up with the huns?

Sounds like SD hold all the cards but if the fans boycott SD shirts, SD may go for a lump sum break clause. Could be £10m???

    Titter ye much

I think we are ok for STs being activated for Wednesday. Just read on the official website that “Season Ticket cards can no longer be activated for the match”.

Mike Ashley doesn’t give a fig if they buy,the jerseys or not, he makes money from Sevco even if the fans don’t buy them as Sevco have to pay him for every jersey that doesn’t sell. He’s in a win win situation and they cannot do anything about it.

The real mistake was made selling the jerseys for a pittance just to keep the lights on.

Sevco the gift that keep on giving the next instalment will be when Hummel and Elite take them to court

  17. Wee skim of that beauty of a document – but can’t tell whether Sevco damages are limited or unlimited and the judge didn’t seem to think it would make a material difference to the huns surviving, whihc is soemthiung they pleaded in mitigation?

    Anybody clarify?

  18. Reading the judgment it seems they could owe anything between 5 & 10 million to Ashley. How is this not front page news on the Rags. Has any journalist at all highlighted it.

  19. !!Bada Bing!! on

A text doing the rounds saying Douglas Park having to sell part of his business, as King has done him over, converting £14 million he’s owed, into worthless shares, and King asked him for another £2 million last week for legal fees, and 1st installment of the Swedish van Dijk’s transfer fee…

  20. Went on to the FF cesspit and they’re in tears.

    so….

I’m now eating a large bowl of jelly and ice cream and cackling loudly !!!!

  21. That explains the squirrel today about being open to everyone, deflection , everything is alright dont ask about accounts, but no interest confirmed by Robertson in morelos, how is this mob a viable concern?
