Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv gives Celtic generous draw

258

If Celtic overcome Nomme Kalju in the Champions League second qualifying round, they will face either Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the third qualifier.

Cluj are one of those clubs who will never be taken lightly, after a remarkable win away to Roma in the Champions League nine years ago, but recent times have not been as prosperous.  They lost out in last year’s Europa League qualifiers to Luxembourg’s Dudelange.  In the first qualifying round this season, Cluj recorded an unexpected win against Astana, who are seeded only slightly lower than Celtic.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv went out of the Europa League playoff round last season to Norwegians, Sarpsborg.  This was a poor showing by Maccabi, but there are caveats – the Norwegians were midseason and subsequently put on a decent showing in their Europa group.

Apart from Saturday’s Super Cup, this will be Maccabi Tel-Aviv’s first competitive outing of the season, so you would not bet against Cluj taking down their second seed of the campaign.

There is work to do, but it we cannot reach the payoff round from this draw, we do not deserve to be there.

Just passing this on before any you get started

Douglas Parks business has been in effective administration & has been run by the bank for the last 18 months. The bank have now instructed that Park sell the car sales part of his business immediately, all of this because he believed King, and King has rode him bareback. His loans to Sevco have been converted into worthless shares and he possibly has lost anything up to €12.5m propping up Kings ego/mouth. And King had the balls to ask him to put in another €2m last week so that they could pay the 1st instalment of the Swedish guy & their legal teams bills. Who by the way are working strictly on a cash basis only. Celtic are planning around them going bang again. Top it off, Dorrans, Murphy have been told to leave & if they don’t think they will be training with the youths. Barasic has been told that he has no future and should be looking for a new club. The problem is that no one in Croatia will be or are paying anyone over €20k per week to any player there. They’ve left 5 people behind the scenes go just so they can make payroll for the players. Hummel have withheld the €1.4m start of the season bonus coz of the Commercial deal fiasco. Jimmy Bell has been busy buying kit without badges from the Hummel UK guy and then getting the badges etc put on. They’re f#####

My own personal favourite from their thread.

And ‘appeal’ seems to be the new word for ‘denial’. If you keep appealing it won’t happen is the logic.

Hope this doesn’t sound trite – is this window the opposite to the Willow window?

  5. Bada,

I don’t know how much of that is true but I was told by a well known CQN’r, who doesn’t deal in rumours, that Park’s accountants warned him about a year ago that propping up sevco was being detrimental to the business and no more money should change hands as the company could not afford it. Good money going after bad when you should consider cutting your losses.

Two things today about Mr Stewart Robertson:

1 – he was appointed to the board of the SPFL

2 – he was described thus by Lionel Persey QC (sitting as a Judge of the High Court)

“Five witnesses gave evidence at the trial and a considerable body of documentary evidence was produced.

    The witnesses were:

(1)Mr Justin Barnes, a business consultant to the Sports Direct group.

(2)Mr James Don Blair, Rangers’ Company Secretary.

(3)Mr Stewart Robertson, Rangers’ Managing Director.

(4)Mr Neil Friar, the Chairman of Elite.

(5)Mr Mark Underwood, the Managing Director of Elite.

With the notable exception of Mr Underwood I found much of the witness evidence to be unhelpful and unsatisfactory, as I will describe below.

    ……

Mr Robertson was appointed as Managing Director of Rangers in June 2015. His statement also contained evidence and argument about the intention of the parties and the meaning of the Agreement. He was shown documents that clearly suggested that Rangers were having discussions with other kit suppliers from as early as 12 July 2017 (ie very shortly after the Agreement was concluded and in breach of the non-solicitation provisions in the Agreement). Although he did not accept this there was, in my judgment, considerable force in the point . Mr Robertson was, in my view, a mouthpiece for Rangers.”

So, a judge in THE HIGH COURT OF JUSTICE, QUEEN’S BENCH DIVISION, COMMERCIAL COURT describes him as “unhelpful and unsatisfactory” and “a mouthpiece for Rangers”.

Happy days ahead for Scottish football.

Doesn’t make sense, if the bank was running Douglas Park, they wouldn’t allow them to give millions to Sevco. And if Celtic are planning around them in any way shape or form Lawwell should be sacked immediately.

It’s clear however that they have a funding shortfall, whether they rely on European football, players sales, loans or anonymous backers to cover their losses is unknown.

  13. !!Bada Bing!! on

Found this amusing also……………… Every Celtic fan should buy something from sports direct now and post a picture of their purchase on the internet. Reverse the huns boycott 🤣🤣🤣 I’ll be heading over tonight.

  14. From the SDI Court Judgement,

    95. As to the first point, I am not satisfied that Rangers will lose significant revenues. It has already received the revenues due in respect of the 2018/2019 season and, given the limited nature of the injunctive relief now sought, will likely receive those due from Elite in the 2019/2020 season. It will also be entitled to receive revenues from SDIR in respect of the 2020/2021 season. In any event the potentialloss of revenues and exposure to claims from Elite are both ordinary and natural consequences of Rangers’ breaches of the Agreement. As to the second point, the limited nature of the injunctive relief now sought means the supply of kit and other products will not be interrupted for the forthcoming season. There is in my judgment no sensible risk that fans will be deprived of the opportunity to spend their hard-earned money on purchasing the forthcoming season’s kit. Nor do I consider that there is any risk that Rangers’ ability to function as a football club will be impaired. The Elite Retail Units Agreement96.I need finally to address the Elite Retails UnitsAgreement. Rangers has admittedthat it was in breach of this agreement and, as I have set out in paragraph 34 above, Rangers has treated it as subsidiary to the Elite Non-Exclusive Rights Agreement and, it would appear, consider themselves to be bound by the injunction that Teare J granted in respect of thatagreement. SDIR nevertheless wishes to regularise the position and seeks declaratory and injunctive relief at paragraphs 34(5F)-(5I) of its AmPoC in order to do. Rangers did notargue against this in itsskeletonargumentor in its oral submissions.I consider it appropriate to grant the relief sought by SDIR.Conclusions97.In summary:-(1)Rangers was in breach of the Agreement by entering into the Elite/Hummel Agreement and by failing to offer SDIR the opportunity to exercise its matching rights in respect of Elite/Hummel’s offer.(2)SDIR is entitled to the declaratoryrelief which it seeks.(3)SDIR is entitled to an injunction in broadly the terms set out in paragraph 87above, althoughI will hear counsel as to the precise form of that injunction.

”There is in my judgment no sensible risk that fans will be deprived of the opportunity to spend their hard-earned money on purchasing the forthcoming season’s kit. Nor do I consider that there is any risk that Rangers’ ability to function as a football club will be impaired.”

  15. My thanks to the CQNer who put up the film of Shane Lowry (I forget who) singing the Fields of Athenry. I haven’t enjoyed anything so much for a long time. His sheer delight was a joy to watch.

He should be invited to Celtic Park to lead the singing at the flying of the Flag at the start of the season.

  16. There is no way Douglas Parks business is being run by the bank, and they sanctioned him spending its cash on Sevco.

    Sorry , missed your reply

I thought the Huns paid off SD on the ‘onerous’ Deal you described I.e, the Goodfellas ‘FU pay me anyway ‘ deal.

Part of that pay off was that SD could match any future deal; hence the fans were told all was sorted and buy yer taps.

The latest wrangle, if I am correct, is because the clause was reneged upon

That is why I am interested in what kind of deal the three parties cut and why SD might take damages rather than a contract

Hummel and SD vs der Hun and der Hun have no money. The fans money from sales needs to happen

Can’t believe they ignored a negotiated clause

I remember clauses that are 7 years old and I am not a lawyer

The thing that gets me is they are now flogging their merchandise out of tents, and a pub yet there are still ‘supporters’ that don’t recognise GLIB for what he is.

I really don’t think much of Hummel or Elite at this stage either unless they were shafted also, regarding the SDI clause.

It was interesting when announcement was made the reportage across Scotland was uniform.SD won and and that was it.little reporting of why the case arose in the first place. I wonder how much analysis will come in the future and I would bet if any it’ll be on behalf of the convicted criminals victim fc.against his mikeness.
