Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv gives Celtic generous draw

258

If Celtic overcome Nomme Kalju in the Champions League second qualifying round, they will face either Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the third qualifier.

Cluj are one of those clubs who will never be taken lightly, after a remarkable win away to Roma in the Champions League nine years ago, but recent times have not been as prosperous.  They lost out in last year’s Europa League qualifiers to Luxembourg’s Dudelange.  In the first qualifying round this season, Cluj recorded an unexpected win against Astana, who are seeded only slightly lower than Celtic.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv went out of the Europa League playoff round last season to Norwegians, Sarpsborg.  This was a poor showing by Maccabi, but there are caveats – the Norwegians were midseason and subsequently put on a decent showing in their Europa group.

Apart from Saturday’s Super Cup, this will be Maccabi Tel-Aviv’s first competitive outing of the season, so you would not bet against Cluj taking down their second seed of the campaign.

There is work to do, but it we cannot reach the payoff round from this draw, we do not deserve to be there.

Phil B points out that the Ashley court case will cost the new mob millions, unless my eyes are deceiving me seen nada from the smsm on this, wonder why😂😂😂

  2. Good luck to Mittyland and big Erik Sviatchenko in their tie next round.

It looks like progress neiderkorn who are confident, the last time they played the fledgling 7 year olds they inflicted defeat on them, and providing Scottish football with its most embarrassing result ever.lest he forget(am no:-))

David 17’s quote (point 95) from the judgement seems to imply that Sevco are in clover. If that is the outcome, then why did Ashley bother and, effectively, who cares.

Looks like all the litigation was pointless.

Gird your Loins Celtic – they will through their own and everybody else’s money to the winds to stop us, and it looks as though the law will be toothless.

    Get into them!

  4. Any of the more legally astute chaps on here tell us if the `many millions of pounds`claim is likely to come to fruition?

  5. Does anybody else think that with Peter Lowell and the other guy from Dundee leaving the board

Of the sfa , and with Stuart Robinson of theme and the guy from Hamilton

    Getting onto the board.

Think that the fix is being put in .

Or will it free up Celtic to complain vigorously?

  6. Jinkyredstar,

    I read the judgement differently,

Sevco were tryin to restrict SDs claim to £1 million,

the judge ruled againt it saying SD losses could be much more than that

  7. Hot smoked

    James Coleman reports

For those asking the judgment today in Sports Direct V Rangers Football club is a “declaratory judgment.”

That hands it back to the parties to come to an agreement, the court will only get involved if this cannot be done.

If you are on Twitter j doleman suggests it’s likely to be in the £millions also the longer it takes to settle the higher the damages will be.

    AT, I’m fine thanks.

I knew that the story had appeared in the SMSM but that every version was a word for word copy.

So a Level 5 Black Ops thing.

As for Park, it makes sense that this is his own dosh he’s throwing into the Newco Money Pit.

We on here have always been discomfitted by that club’s ability to sign managers & players while the club have no appreciable source of income to support this largesse.

Loans, loans and more loans from “amis du Club” but as you say, none of these friends are able to write off the loans.

I do hope that Bada Bing’s transcript from whatever source is half way accurate.

Park’s problems, Sports Direct’s win & nervous short term investors sounds great to me.

    Stay well & happy.

  9. Park, has an alleged personal fortune of £85m

Surely it is his own personal money being used – again allegedly driven by a son, to fund the new club ?

Why would this impact on the Parks business model, and its separate divisions ??

Does Park have £85m in the bank?

  14. 2nd rangers prize money from pre season tournament’s means they can go on for another 17 days at least.

  15. I agree with Tiny Tim.

They will come out of this smelling of roses, they always do, time after time they have been banged to rights, nothing ever happens to them, sure they died, or did they, what I see in front of my eyes tells me they didn’t die, the millions that pours into their coffers tell me they didn’t die, the day they really actually die will be the day that the football world will celebrate.

  16. Karma bites yer bum…

Sevco, in the HC in Edinburgh (I think) argued successfully that they weren’t a busted flush because their directors had made a committment to always ensure all necessary funds would be made available to keep the Club/Company afloat (as stated in their annual accounts).

In the case vs SDI they try to argue that a hefty fine will be hugely detrimental to the existence of the Club/Company.

Leaving aside the “You should thought about that before…” obvious response, haven’t they also shot down their own argument by previously stating that the directors would always guarantee sufficient funds to keep the Club/Company afloat?

If you argue, in court, that you (the directors of Sevco FC) will always guarantee funding, shouldn’t you be pleased that the judge takes you at your word?

You can’t have it both ways…. not that it stops them trying….

  17. All I can see from the court ruling,is that SDI,are owed”Many millions”from Sevco.Thats the bottom line.

I am sure Elite and Hummell will be involved as well. What their actions will be,time will tell.

I know people keep saying “I have heard it all before”and I understand, but it is a gradual build up to financial disaster. We know last season they ran once again at huge losses. This year, they have signed a further 8 players, even at 10 grand a week, thats another 4 million onto the wages,+their signing on fees.In reality, probably around £ 6 million all in.Its been building for years, and it cant go on.Just be patient. No group stage in the Europa will scuttle them even further.

  18. FATHER TED,

“They always come out smelling of roses”.

They don’t look dead to me.

  22. Is the ‘rangers’ shop in Belfast run by elite?

I was past it the other day.

The gear they were selling looks even less elite than the gear you get on the sale rails at a sports direct. Unbranded knock off gear including an orange hoodie with theRFC logo.

    It made me chuckle.

  23. If Sevco have to cough up between £5m and £10m isn’t that just an arm and then a leg of their £20m Colombian early-bath merchant?

  24. Rumours abound at times like this. Just stick to facts. I go back to 2011/12 when the oldco was coming to an end. Rumours were rife. Facts dictated that they were humped.

The facts at present point in a similar direction.

    They are gubbed.

Everything about their day to day operations screams fur coat and no knickers.

  25. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

I think this is another nail in the coffin – of the already dead ‘club’. I agree with Turkeybhoy – an accumulation of financial realities will scupper them.

In terms of the ruling – and admittedly I am not an expert – I think the paragraphs 87 and 88 are the ones that will kill them again:

Para 87 – “…Mr Sa’ad Hossain QC,who appeared on behalf of SDIR, acknowledged that as matters now stand SDIR is reduced to a damages claim in respect of the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons…”

“Reduced” ‘to a damages claim’ is an interesting turn of phrase – and I think a tad sarcastic by the QC. Para 88 goes on to define the scope of the potential ‘problem’ for The Rainjurz:

    “…Rangers shall:

(i)not perform the Elite/Hummel Agreement (i.e., will have no dealings with Elite / Hummel under the terms of their contracts – I expect Elite/Hummel will have a contractually problematic view on that!!!)….

    …Rangers shall:

(i)not propose or agree sale dates in respect of Replica Away and Third playing kits (i.e., can’t sell their Orange kits)

    …..

(iv) not create a Hummel branded area within the Rangers Megastore at Ibrox Stadium (probably means the death of the Louden Mega-Pop-up too – shame :-(( )

    (v) not deliver (insofar as not already delivered) any of the items noted in points under “Sponsorship” on pages 5 and 6 of the Elite / Hummel Agreement for the football seasons 2018/2019, 2019/2020 or 2020/2021 (really feked by this one – 32Red will be delighted !!)

(vii) forthwith terminate the Elite Non-Exclusive Rights Agreement in the event that Elite fails to comply with any of its obligations under such agreement …” (..one for Elite to examine, although I expect really feked by this one too).

All in all – not a positive for Dave King and his merry band. Remains to be seen whether the unseen ‘Rainjurz’ hand is powerful enough to thwart the legal system.
