Cluj rested 8 ahead of Celtic clash

64

We are more familiar with what it is like facing opponents who have little to play for when we need a result, than the scenario we face tonight.  Celtic have secured top position in their Europa League group, while Cluj require a point to ensure qualification as runner up.  If Celtic win, a win for Lazio in Rennes will put the Italians through.

While Neil Lennon will field a vastly weaker selection, the team will still be full of effort.  We should not expect anything other than a Cluj win, but a side released from the burden of expectation and players with a point to prove could throw up an interesting night.  Leigh Griffiths, in particular, will surely make the most of the occasion.

As is his way, Cluj manager Dan Petrescu, made eight changes to his side’s starting line-up on Sunday to ensure his team were in peak condition for the Europa League.  That decision resulted in a defeat that cost Cluj top spot in the league.  The former Chelsea player’s methods are not universally liked by the team’s supporters.

Those concerns will fade into the distance if they manage to eliminate Rennes and Lazio and reach the Europa knockout rounds.

Tom Rogic signed shirt raffle for Celtic FC Foundation – FINAL DAY!!

The Celtic squad wore a special shirt for last month’s league game against Motherwell, bearing the Celtic FC Foundation Christmas Appeal logo instead of the normal Dafabet logo on the front, and the words “Christmas Appeal” on the back, instead of the Magners logo.

Tom Rogic’s signed shirt from that day is available for raffle.  Each donation of £10 or more will be entered into a draw, which will take place on Friday 13 December.  The shirt will be posted on Monday 16th (or available for collection at the Hibs game on Sunday 15th).

The Celtic FC Foundation do incredible work throughout the world all year round, but their work with those most in need in the winter months, and for children and families coping with chronic poverty, can give warmth, nourishment, self-respect and  human compassion that some people struggle to find.  All donations go straight to the Foundation.

This is why Celtic exists.  You can enter here at JustGiving.  The competition closes tomorrow, good luck and thank you!!

  1. Dead Rubber – Its origin is actually from the card game ‘rubber bridge’ where in a three-competition game one team wins once it scores 100 points or more. If that is done before completing the three competitions, the remaining one is said to be dead rubber.

A vastly changed team tonight should let us see how well some of the fringe players and youths can play.

Gordon in goal? Some game time to put himself in the shop window as I believe he can sign a pre-contract in January as his contract is up at the end of the season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up back at Hearts.

    Big Wavy,

I still think Gordon is a great keeper to be honest. I really hope we can pull something out the hat and sign Fraser Forster tho.

  4. I see the huns are building for the future with contract extensions for:

    Defoe (38 next birthday..)

Davis (35 in a couple of weeks)

    McGregor (38 next month..)

Two of them are literally twice the age of Frimpers…

    ‘WHERE did socialism work ?

    Gimme a list.

    OK. Just one place.’ ”

People often ask that question. Less often , if at all, do people ask `Where did Capitalism work?`.

The answer would be, of course, that it works for the top ten per cent ( and much less than that in many countries). Alao, one would have to define what is meant by `works`.

Very good ( Although I always thought it was Yiddle :-)) ).

  6. No idea what the midfield will be like tonight. Christie & Rogic stayed in Glasgow. Does that mean Ntcham at number 10?

Does that mean both Robertson and Coffey at central midfield?

    Nice light leader Pablo.

Have to admit I am thoroughly enjoying the political debate on this, and the previous, thread. Thank you guys.

A fair bit of discussion recently on the value of this blog?

I’m a simple soul, easily pleased.

As long as this site (by virtue of it’s contributors) continues daily to raise a smile, a laugh or an eyebrow ….

    It’ll do for me.

    :)

    Hail hail

  8. B2B – couldn’t agree more; still enjoy my daily read & look forward to the “better” contributors – all points of view welcome, civilised arguments preferred.

Be good to watch the game tonight as an ‘interested party’ rather than a heaving mass of nerves and heartbeat with a mouth!

  10. Vote Tory and you endorse austerity, homelessness, hunger, the wholesale destruction of the NHS and countless other cuts to essential public and social services. By supporting Boris you actively endorse racism, sexism, Islamophobia and homophobia. Please be compassionate today ❤️

Unfortunately sense like yours falls on deaf ears among the true blues in the north east, Ayrshire and assorted crimplene wearers who would rather see their children bare footed the give up ‘ra union’! Add to that general smattering of selfish, greedy torags and you have their constant 25%.

Strong statement without any evidence. Don’t recall Blair or Brown doing much apart from Blair leading us into a war causing death to many. Not saying the current PM is brilliant but JC has a very strange history when one looks at his bedfellows.

Yes it should be interesting to see what the ‘less regulars’ bring to the table.

A good attempt , but anyone on here even vaguely entertaining the idea of voting Tory , is unlikely to listen to (or even recognise) reason.
