Clyde flows west but tide of football history flows east to Parkhead

574

Dalglish, we are told, ran to his bedroom to rip posters off the wall, in case Sean Fallon would see them and reconsider, but Celtic have always been open to all. Kenny will tell you, he was assured Rangers were preparing to sign him, but this was Celtic. In 1967. He knew which way the tide of history was flowing.

Sean’s boss, The Boss, once spent his free Saturdays following Rangers. Stein didn’t just become a lapsed Rangers fan, according to his friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson. As Celtic manager, he made it his business to wholly and completely end the dominance they had over the then humble team from Parkhead. I’ll spare the detail of how that sentiment translated down to the vernacular.

Scott Allan made no secret of his boyhood allegiances. He would have gone to Ibrox in a flash, as would so many of our historic greats, but this decision came down to a simple truth. The basic salary on offer at Celtic is around three times what the jungle drums were offering across the city. This disparity means it’s not just about the money, it’s about that tide of history, which Kenny Dalglish knew so well.

Today is witness to one more veil being peeled off, exposing more of the consequences of what happened when Rangers decided not to make provisions for the inevitable challenge to their aggressive tax avoidance schemes. Their Discounted Options Scheme was found to be illegal, as were several of their Employee Benefit Trusts, with the remainder subject to appeal, but the club went to the wall because that inevitable challenge made it impossible for them to borrow other people’s money.

Liquidation followed and hundreds of creditors were left unpaid, but while a newco from such ashes could change their name to Rangers and wear the same jerseys, it was always going to look like an off-key tribute act. This was never going to be about three years in the lower leagues.

Scott Allan is a project not the finished article only time will tell if he can force his way into the Celtic midfield. He will need time and we should give the bhoy that it is a big step up in class moving from Hibernian to Celtic.H.H.

Hello again all you young rebels.

What a slap in the puss to all the Celtic haters if we sign this young

lad, if he had signed for the stickies it would have sent a shot across

the bows of the Scottish football that they were back in the big time

but now just crawling away meekly with tails between their legs.

    Isn’t Karma wonderful.

Bouncing now, so down to the caravan tomorrow on the peninsula,

not long bought the van to save the princess having to drive me home

from our Celtic club days, so now she can have a wee wine ( carnage )

and relax, fingers crossed, Paddymacoz has likened it to one of the

old travellers vans which were horse drawn and has now christened

me gypsy Mick and reckons i should decorate it to suit, the wee mhan

said ” just paint green hoops on it Papa and we’ll call it the hoopy van

i think thats the way to go.

Well plan for tomorrow, maybe 10 klms run along the beach , although

all those babes stopping me and asking about the hoops top takes time

could always go out on the wee mhans board and surf a few waves for

an hour or so, or just have my usual ten pints of Guinness and practise

    my Irish dancing with Paddy.

    mmm.it’s a hard one.

  12. Now that we’ve signed Scott Allan (almost)…

Who honestly thinks that that carthorse Danny Wilson was ever being seriously considered?

Thems could never ever compete if we wanted a player that they also wanted

  13. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm BBC Scotland news on bbc1 Golden Eagles in South Scotland, pipe band championship and something else irrelevant about him that was in a film…. That one Burt Lancaster was in oil and a red telephone box. Nothing at all about doing the huns one

I do not reckon that the smsm were doing anything except trying to create the impression that the huns were wheeling and dealing at the sharp end …stop laughing….in order to sell ST’s and upsetting the huns biggest rivals this season.

  17. Allan worth a punt at that money esp since it seems Dylan isn’t going to make the mark at Celtic… But without doubt it’s another project.

I’d be more excited if Allan was 19… Surprised Henderson wasn’t sent to a SPL team instead … Does anyone remember his pass to guidetti against inter for the goal ? First class

  18. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

I’ll be glad when this deal is finally done and will want to extend a very warm welcome to Scott to Celtic. I think he will be great for us in the fullness of time because he is a very talented, skilful player who can unlock defences with a killer pass. At the moment he is possibly not up to our levels of fitness and might struggle with the pace of the SPFL Premiership initially but it won’t take him long to get there.

Come on Scott, sign on the dotted line and become a Celtic legend like Dalglish, McGrain and many others. I know you’ll get 100% backing from the Celtic support when you run onto our hallowed turf.

  19. I am amazed about the excitement this young man has caused signing for our beloved hoops.JOCK STEIN.DANNY MCGRAIN .KENNY DALGLISH>to name a few .who givsafk. If he can produce.that wee bit of skill-panache.Who cares.Seriously that other mob will be greeting in their Penny Arcade.Dyllan and Lyam have a great time in the Capital.I”m sure there will be lots of Celtic fans following your career.YNWA>

  20. Scott Brown, we”re gonny sign Scott Brown, we’re gonny sign Scott Brown…….oh shit

    Aw FFS no again!

Och he’s shite anyway, we didny really want him

  21. glendalystonsils on

Maybe now I can go into Newsnow Celtic without seeing a liberal sprinkling of ‘Celtic and Rangers tracking/ interested in/ battling to sign….etc.

In regard to the transfer market, as in every other respect, we are on a different planet to them.

  22. mullet and co 2 on

The official site lists 12 midfielders in our first team squad. If Henderson and McGeouch go and Allan comes in that’s 11 competing for 5 places. Normally that would be enough but the quality is in question particularly down the flanks.

Our net spend this transfer window is about 800k. I’d be looking for Boeerigter to go and get replaced by someone like Christie.

  23. BILLYBEAR…… are you bugging ma work? The office hun has been wandering around all day muttering exactly that!!!! lol

  24. All this talk about players being Celtic supporters as young lads is strange given that only one of the fourteen who player at Kilmarnock was a young Celtic fan, viz., Mulgrew.

Other thought can someone who is able to do so post a petition to be sent to the editor of the Hearald complaining about the serious consequences of racist / sectarian statements by reporters on his paper.

Been reading your posts since you came on here, bud.

Either yer a Tim at the wind up,or one of those genuinely pleasant fellas who just support the wrong team-through no fault of your own,of course!

Natch, loads of us know real good but misguided football supporters. Some were even lucky enough to meet EDWARD URSUS. Closest I got was leaving the price of a double JD and Coke in his local.

Stood up again, but heyho,I’m kinda used to it now!

Point is,by this transfer-as I said overnight, and others have done also-Hibs have been strengthened by this, and Rangers have only themselves to blame.

PS- I expect that this time next year,Liam Henderson and Scott Allan will both be vastly improved from their relative experience. And it might be the making of Dylan McGeough.

Fingers crossed, keep playing the good guy, bud. It’s appreciated.

  26. Surely a chance for the SMSM to dig out Allan Signs For Old Firm headline?

Even if he never kicks a ball for Celtic, this will still be £275,000 well spent just for the pleasure of watching their over-infalted bubble go pop.
