Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

Despicable a some may see it, Nevin is simply playing the SMSM game to turn a copper.

He is no better or worse than some with Celtic connections who happily write for rags like the Sun, Record etc.

    ………………………………………………..

Quonno I fully understand the predicament workers have in any trade profession or business to comply with requests that might not be to their liking.

To some extent we all comprimise our principles when we have to earn a buck. I have been in the unenviable situation whereby I had to go along with people I wouldn’t have given the time of day to, were it not for the fact that I had to get work to keep my engineering business going, and my workers employed.

That said, whereas I might have bit my tougue (sorry SadiesBhoy) I would never have turned on my own as blatantly and deviously as Nevin did, when he didn’t hear a thing!

He should have ignored the comment or said he would need to hear what was said/sung he didn’t he dived in with great gusto. A put up job.

We all tailor our conduct to the company we are in but come on. This was treason without good reason! Sorry about the aliteration again.

I’m glad you had a season ticket and hope you get another one, or support Celtic the best you can, – so I was wrong there.

I just wish Celtic fans would be more discerning with comments like saying ‘we sing’ in multitudes and in choir “soon there’ll be no protestants at all” *you posted *

It really is so yesterday, to suggest it’s a current add on to a song, especially when non Catholic Celtic supporters acknowledge and are content, this sectarian singing is generally if not wholly, extinct.

  6. If I read this wrong then apologies as I didn’t have much time to read the article… Did Pat Nevin say that he has no problem with political singing? If so, would he tolerate a fascist or Communist display at a football game?

Looking back on it that particular line must surely have been our lowest point as a support together with the execrable Roamin’ in the Gloamin’. I admit to my embarrassment and eternal shame that I sang both of them as a teenager. I’ve lost count of the number of Protestant Celtic supporters I have spoken to since.

Hopefully in the comming week I will have an answer for you from GCC. They have now accepted my Freedom of Information request after several attemps at trying to get me to drop it.

First they kept saying that it was directed to the wrong department and as such they couldn’t comply. Then they gave it the wording is to vaugue and the cost prohibits their complying with my request.

Then out of the blue(no pun intended) I received an email from a Gmail account that contained a link to an online GCC site where you could make FOI requests, the email also contained some advice on how a person might fill in the form to guarantee a positive response.

So here’s hoping they don’t take to long.

BTW if any GCC workers are lurking on here and saw my last post on this issue. Thanks ;)

  9. A wee note regarding the badges.

We can’t reply to all the emails we are getting, not until the email addresses are all collated.

But names will be noted and demand supplied, hopefully!

  10. Bournesoupe, thanks. The problem is that I did not say that the song was sung in ‘multitudes’. That is why I clearly stated that the sentiment was not widespread and was actually rather the fault of individuals. I also don’t believe that sectarian singing is a problem at Celtic Park, nor indeed at away grounds. If you wish to respond critically to a post, please at least have the good grace to read it properly. Take care over there.

If memory serves, I think it was actually ‘Soon there’ll be no Provident at all.’

The lack of foresight in that line – especially in light of current austerity – has left a lot of us with egg on our faces – hence the lack of it about the terraces.

I did and it gave me a good enough insight into his family decision. To me, it seemed like an element of self sacrifice was involved.

I do not think we should provide any more details on here because we have more class than that.

Brilliant will ask him that on Saturday. I can hear it going into orbit over his head already.

  21. Good interview and article with Pat Nevin. Looks like he was stitched up by someone at the BBC but as they are still a paymaster he is reluctant to say so.

He was still extremely naive to accept that Celtic fans would be singing sectarian songs. He clearly knows the difference between political and sectarian songs.

Had we been singing sectarian songs his comments would not have been misplaced.

He has trod the neutral path to enhance his career.

Wonder if he will be working on the Ramsden Cup Final outside the sound proof box.
