Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

  1. Morning all

Day off today, but must go to Glasgow… no choice, duty calls.

Pat Nevin, yep that’s all I’ve got to say on that.!

Now Celtic, well, looking forward to the game on Saturday with LG likely to make his debut, but even more importantly, my big son 14, is going to be sitting next to his auld Dad for this game only…. see how that pans out, looking forward to it greatly.

So, if someone says, for example,” All Scottish people are arrogant, pompous and racist.”

and you called that person ` ignorant and thick` because you strongly believed that not to be the case, would you be wrong to have so labelled him?

67, if a person is going to denigrate a place, which I assume that he has not visited, and make untrue statements then it is incumbent upon others to dismiss his outburst as nonsense.

Thanks for that extract. Brings to mind that I actually saw three Chelsea games while Pat Nevin was there, all against Liverpool it has to be said, and two in which Nevin definitely played. One was an FA Cup tie, January 1986, pay at the gate, when I ended up in amongst the Chelsea fans on the main terracing, which Liverpool won 2-1. That had to be among the worst experiences I have ever had, stuck among the National Front spewing hatred and bile for the whole match. I might have felt more comfortable at the Rangers end at Ibrox. Do not recall what wee Pat might have written about that in the NME. Main point, Nevin played at Chelsea when they were the nastiest club in London by a long way. And yet he has no problem with his son identifying with them. Hypocrite of the highest order.

Doubts over fans’ bid to buy Rangers

RANGERS supporters today expressed serious doubts an ambitious fan ownership scheme being spearheaded by a splinter group will succeed.

Fresh hopes have been raised about Gers fans taking control of the Ibrox club in the past week after Hearts supporters successfully rescued the Tynecastle club from administration.

Supporters Direct Scotland is set to hold a meeting with groups interested in fan ownership at the Louden Tavern in Glasgow on Friday, February 14.

But many involved in the three main supporters’ organisations – the Assembly, the Association and the Trust – are disappointed at the scheme.

It is being fronted by former board members of the Trust which had been looking into the possibility of setting up a Interest Company (CIC).

They resigned from the Trust en masse and now appear to be looking to set up a CIC themselves.

The CIC would allow greater sums of money to be raised by fans than is currently the case – and therefore a greater number of shares to be purchased.

SDS chief Paul Goodwin has previously estimated that 25,000 Rangers fans paying £20 a month would be enough to gain control of the Ibrox club.

It is believed that fans could be asked to part with £18.72 a month – Rangers was founded back in 1872 – in order to achieve this goal.

However, doubts have been expressed about whether there would be any shares to buy in Rangers – even if larger sums of money could be raised.

There are also fears it could have a negative impact on an existing scheme being operated by the Trust, Buy Rangers.

One supporter, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Hearts are available to buy at this moment in time.

“Rangers, on the other hand, aren’t available to buy. Unless, that is, the group driving this know more than the rest of us know.

“Maybe some institutional investors will indeed look to cut their losses in the future. But even then there is no guarantee that fans would be able to buy shares.”

The potential formation of a new fans’ group has also not gone down well among many representatives of the Assembly, the Association and the Trust.

The supporter said: “The last thing we need is an additional group on the scene. I don’t think it is what fans want to see.

“My concern would be that it would create division and undo a lot of hard work.

“In the past year we have presented a united front. We have all come together under one umbrella.

“The last thing that we need now is another organisation.”

Is this Sevco sharesave scheme to buy shares in the club or the holding co.? Why invest in holding co if its not the club? #sevcologic

  9. There have been some complaints that we are discussing Pat Nevin overmuch. Maybe we are but at least that is a Celtic matter and deals , in no small way, with the bigger issue of the BBC`s anti-Celtic bias. For that alone, it is worthy of discussion on a Celtic site. More than can be said of the Independence debate on here rather than on a site created for that purpose.

So, we are only two days away from an interesting encounter with Aberdeen. Do CQNers have any views on that? Will our previously OK relationship with Aberdeen take a nose-dive because of a few nutters at Tynecastle? Will our winning run continue? Will Neil pick his strongest side? Will Leigh G start? Will he score? Will a big Aberdeen support spur our subdued support into vociferous backing?

Not unless they are forced to. Lately, I have come to the view that the BBC (Scotland) bias is worse than the MSSM `papers and `phone in shows. At leas the latter might have sales figures/responses as their motive. The BBC does not have even that excuse and I am left to assume that there are bitter Huns in positions of power.

Can we collect evidence of this bias and present it to BBC (London) ?

    Good Morning all,

In many respects, Big Nan has hit the nail fairly and squarely in the head.

The point of the Nevin interview was to hear what Pat Nevin had to say and examine and debate what happened on that day.

Now, on his decision to nor return to Celtic park I have heard his explanation and as a parent I could quite happily accept his reasoning and motives.

However, we point out in the article that he has told a slightly different story on other occasions and left a completely different flavour with other audiences– whether by design or accident that is simply so.

Again on his evidence to the justice committee, his entire opening statements are focused on what happened to him and his experience, and with respect to his stated point of view he conflates what he sees as his position on his son with the abuse he received after the cup final— which abuse I have reason to question.

In that respect, the real value of his evidence to the justice committee is only seen when he depersonalises his opinions and arguments– and again it is pointed out that many people give far better opinions and arguments when they depersonalise and exercise far greater objectivity.

However, where Big Nan really scores, in my opinion, is his assertion that the cup final was a contrived situation.

Last night I asked “was it that easy?” to manipulate a position whereby a presenter and a summariser are able to effectively use the public airwaves to tarnish a support yet the BBC are not able to find any recordings of the behaviour mentioned on the programme?

And sadly the answer is a resounding YES!

I do not blame Pat Nevin or Rob Mclean for that manipulation as both were innocent to the entire situation being contrived.

McLean clearly sought to distance himself from what was sprung on him ( and I am not surprised by that ) but Pat Nevin fell head first into the temptation to emphasise his own position and did not have the foresight to in anyway caveat his position or make it conditional on what he was told through the earphones being accurate.

He does say in the interview that he wished he had done that — though in the eyes of many that may be too little too late.

However, of greater interest to me was just how easily one rogue producer was able to bring about this most obvious and unwarranted piece of broadcasting “whataboutery”!

    AND

How this just happens to have taken place just one week after the so called “briefing” on the meaning and definition of sectarian chanting or singing.

I know quite a few journalists in the BBC ( various departments ) and have seen first hand how certain words go into a script which are just plain inaccurate and which rankle with the journalists concerned.

Sometimes they get there because of “policy” and other times they get there because of one senior editors personal preference and exercise of power.

Note, that the guidelines and mission statement quoted in my editorial state that you, the viewer, should not be able to discern a news reporters personal views on a topic– but what is to stop an editor or producer bringing about the reporting of their particular stance– as appears to have happened here?

One well known and respected ( I think ) Celtic supporting journalist will tell you openly that most BBC sports reporters support a team other than Rangers or Celtic — yet the public perception is somewhat different.

Might that be because of the script they are meant to follow which of course is dictated at times by someone else.

Again many journalists have a private view on things which they are happy to share in private, yet they have to tone down their opinion on air because of “policy” or direction.

Somehow, the 2011 cup final interview was corrupted and we all know the result.

Pat Nevin would undo some of that if he could — that much is clear — though whether that redeems his stance in the eyes of many is doubtful and anyway each individual is entitled to his or her opinion.

I can’t quite fathom his differing comments to different audiences – or perhaps his different emphasis on different occasions— and that is for him to reconcile or explain.

However, what I think is plain is that just as he did not see the broadcasting trap coming, he did also not see or was insensitive to the obvious opinions of genuine Celtic fans who were rightly annoyed at the broadcast, and has been taken aback by the abuse from whomsoever it came from.

With the abuse issue and the effect on his family I have considerable sympathy as no one should be subjected to such abuse.

However, again the issue for me is not just about Pat and his family, but also about the fact that whoever a was truly responsible for the imbalanced and improper broadcast doesn’t give a tupenny shit about how their actions ultimately impact on Pat Nevin or any other presenter —- or how the impression left by the non enquiring mind effects you— or me!

Anyway, time to move on as there are other topics and matters to pursue — unless of course further info comes to light in which case……………

  22. Phew wow, the.Uni. Mob got tossed a bone there with the PN interview, oh man they chewed it to death, to be honest I didn’t read it so it’s kind of hard to give it any oxygen I just wasn’t interested because as far as I was concerned it had all been said before, although some got right into the marrow more than others as is there right to air there greviences, BUT! All in all it just ended like a wet fart, only left everyone with opinions that went no where as could have been predicted according to the posts I read that is, ohhhhhhhhh those Unis. I also went to Stamford Bridge a couple of times around 1986/87. I was working in London and made a point of going to watch all of the big London clubs. I watched one Chelsea game from ‘the Shed’ and I would agree that there was a strong and deeply unpleasant right wing element among the fans in there.

However, although you can rightly criticise Nevin for his comments on BBC, his comments before the justice committee, for being small, for wearing specs, for going to see Hibs, etc, etc….. I think its a bit daft to have a go at him for having played for Chelsea. I clearly remember Nevin publicly shouting down the Chelsea supporters and writing about it in the club programme for their booing and chanting against their black player Paul Cannoville (sp?). I don’t remember any other professional footballer in the UK at the time sticking their head above the parapet and doing anything similar.

Nevin played a significant part in watering down the racist element among the Chelsea support, although I suspect Sky TV and Roman Abramovic have subsequently had an even greater affect in this regard.
