Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

  1. Eddie, I have heard it sung since but it was certainly not widespread. Some individuals. However, away grounds may have been a different matter. Anyway, it has been condemned by many Celtic supporters thankfully.

    “Cheer up Walter Smith/Ally McCoist/Stuart McCall…”

In my opinion that is a sectarian song and shouldn’t be sung at Parkhead or anywhere else.

The Orange Order is not a religion – it’s an anti-Catholic organisation and not much else.

Should “Hitler Has Only Got One Ball” be considered sectarian because it offends Nazis?

    Natknow,

“Soon there’ll be no Protestants at all” is one example. Foul and moronic but thankfully not a widespread sentiment.

    ——————————————————

I honestly think the last time I heard that add-on was in the 80’s or 90’s.

But fair point – it’s a legitimate answer to my query.

  4. Benny and John

When was the last time either of those songs was sung at Celtic Park?

  5. John O` Neil,

The only time I have heard a song with the word `Protestant` in it sang by Celtic supporters was one to do with ” Brave Protestant men”.

Re Nevin, I don’t know how anyone can be taken in by him. I haven’t seen his interview and don’t need to.

No journalist worth their salt would react to second hand unsubstantiated rumour as if it were fact. The BBC guidelines expressly forbid it when it concerns criminality and this accusation did.

He was at the CIS League Cup Final for BBC and never said a word when the bile being belted out was unbelievable. He is a rat.

    ================

If you had read the interview you could not have commented as you did above as Nevin covers it.

Ok you might not accept it but surely everyone is entitled to a fair hearing?

    ………………………………………

He didn’t give the Celtic support a fair hearing.

Last heard Roamin in the gloamin(at CP) en masse at the New year game the season we stopped the 10(when Lambert and Burley scored vs the deadco). Think it got a bit of an airing at the 6-2 game to a lesser extent but certainly not common now,

  9. Jungle Jim, good evening.

I haven’t heard those add ons being sung at CP for some time.

The Celtic manager said he was verbally abused and had a coin thrown at him as he watched the League Cup semi-final at Tynecastle stadium in Edinburgh.

The Football Coordinating Unit Scotland are investigating the allegations.

The stadium is the home ground of Hearts Football Club, which said it was looking at CCTV footage.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

Oh come on he reacted on live TV, in the moment. A reaction to sectarian singing NOT the singers, triggered by what he had been told and what he felt strongly about..

He went off on his hobby horse.

He is not the first person to do that and will not be the last.

I thought the Celtic support were big enough, mature enough and all inclusive enough to at least factor that in.

He made a mistake and it was not out of vindictiveness, so I’m cutting him the kind of slack I would hope others would cut me if I made a mistake in the moment.

It’s true, but one thing that will make my out, go burst, is Celtic fans that

repeat sectarian slurs against Celtic fans. Celtic fans do not in unison

sing any sectarian songs at Celtic Park, and haven’t since the new stadium

    went up.

Especially the example given by John O’Neill which collectively in a League

Cup Final “Famine Song” type choral get together, hasn’t been sung since

    the jungle was all standing.
