Cocky Dutch

1147

I’m older than Virgil van Dijk and I’ve seen more football scenarios than he has, so in this respect it is forgivable for him to be talking about Celtic going through the entire league programme undefeated, but Virgil was in the Celtic team who lost at home to Morton less than two months ago, so he really should know the only place to do your talking is on the football field.

Celtic have a rather important game on Tuesday, which the manager will quite rightly be preparing for, making tomorrow’s game against Aberdeen an open race.  If Virgil’s (reported) mind-set is shared by many in the dressing room the 7/1 odds against Aberdeen look generous.

Better all-round if we knock any ‘undefeated all season’ talk on the head.  It’s fine fare for fans but not for players.

Feeling gutted for the five Celtic fans who failed to get justice in Amsterdam yesterday.  The rest of us can busy ourselves campaigning on their behalf but verdict will be a blow to the five and their families.

Have you heard the ‘Tommy Burns – single’, in aid of the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust?  Available on iTunes, 99p.  Wire in.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the current edition of CQN Magazine, not that I want to divert you away, but…  The Football Pink magazine is well worth a read.  We don’t get to read about Hugo Meisl and the Winderteam enough.  Hugo’s in the current issue, along with an excellent article on The history of Irish centre backs, the player loan system, and an article on Gunter Netzer, the midfield general who brought West German football into the modern era.

Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight, 8pm, me, Phil, Paul, Lourdes Fund, Q&A, general revelry.  Tickets on the door.

We have both bitten. Better to leave him in his own sad world. You and I were both there and know exactly what happened

Celtic supporters turned police vehicles over, I was there, but what shamed the police has never been written, they were cowards beyond belief, except for those nutters on their horses who were living out the battle of the boyne in a warp.

  5. allthough i am several years younger than Catman, I a mere teenager at the time, was at the Janefield riot match and caught up in the events, and have my own clear recollection of what happened.

the Police actions started the trouble.

Celtic supporters reacted, but after having violence against them

will tell it another time, still busy in work.

  6. I was there and it was scary but what I remember about it was that – the Blantyre fans who I often stood at no 9 exit with near the huns end with – got stuck right in or it was a case of get trampled.

For those who call me whatever…where you in the ‘entirity’ of JFS ?

No ye weren’t so – shut it.

  7. …62 pages let in the album.. Will save them for tomorrow… Then the game… Then WW’s book.

Good night Timland: and play nice!

The game was the day before my 21st. I was happy to be alive to celebrate it.

  9. how do you wind up polis with the handsome hun song ?

    thats funny.

everyone knows there is not one.

  10. Good to hear that Kano’s still in so many of our thoughts…….

E-mailed Ramie a couple of days ago and no doubt will get a reply in his own time. That man is certainly (for me) the epitome of comradeship……….

If you ( the blog) would indulge me, I would like to re-post a message sent to Martin and Ramie some months back. It’s important that we keep the flame alight………

Reason in part being that my young brother and a nephew bumped into Paul (Kano’s brother) in Amsterdam the other week and I was overwhelmed by the resultant phone calls asking if me and mine were OK etc., which we are for sure…….

    HAIL HAIL KANO

Must be seven years or so ago now when Paul called me and asked if I fancied coming over for a couple of drinks as his brother Martin was passing through on his way back to Australia……… Asked Paul if it was a party but he said ‘no, just a Sellik gathering’ So Virgie and ‘me’ headed out to Mirdiff……. Expected a party type crowd but there was just a ‘select’ gathering, and it worked well………. It was late by the time we got there but it was daylight by the time we left the next morning. More on that later……….

Introductions were made- I had met Matt (Paul’s and Martin’s Dad ( God Rest his soul)) on numerous occasions but had never met Martin, Carolyn or their kids prior to that night. Nonetheless, soon settled in the company and Martin says ‘where’s your drink?’ when Paul interjects ‘it’s chilling, be poured in a minute or two’ Suddenly Martin roars ‘No feckin way, no you an aw’………… I’m like, whit???

‘Is that a pint of red wine you’ve goat there?’

Sheepishly I said ‘aye but I’ll only have a couple’……

Martin then starts to tell me of his great pal in Oz who also shares/shared my liking for said tipple……..

CQN comes up in the course of the conversation ‘so who are you then? Naw no The Barca Mole guy that does the Dubai Hoops website, you’re nuts’…

’awe naw you’re no Kano, you’re an argumentative bassa’

We talked about the Celtic, golf, family, the Lions, friends – especially Ramie and the red wine – Springburn, work on the house in OZ, EK, Dubai, and on on and on……… Bored, tired or a combination, Carolyn and the kids said goodnight and went to bed and Virgie went to sleep on the sofa but Paul, Martin and me were still going strong as the sun came up…… Not sure but think their flight was later that day………

Much, much more to write on this and the events that overtook the convivial gathering referred but really the emotion is a bit raw so maybe just call this chapter one for now………….

Part two to follow one day……..

God Bless Kano, Carolyn and the weans……

  11. What I recall the most about the Blantyre fans that I used to go to the games with in the late 70’s – early 80’s was that they were amongst the ‘Cellic’ fans on the pitch who chased the huns all over Hampden at the 1980 SCF.

  12. KevJungle:

You said you were there, I was there, so how far down the Janefield St. did the horses charge?

What happened when the turned around?

How many times di they charge?

(you only need one hand to count)

And only an absolute fool would stand in front of a horse and try to pull its rider off.

    So write your story.

  13. Sevcomedians ponder the independence issue:

“I am from Northern Ireland and it will hurt my heart and soul to see this Once Great Nation split up and with me having Scottish roots in my family it makes it hurt allot more as during the plantation of Ulster my family came here from Scotland, not just for a better life but to bring this vacant land into this Great Nation Of The United Kingdom we tried to make it feel like home by naming some of our Streets, Villages and Towns after places in Scotland it was where our hearts lay and it made us feel more British.”

    ——

“Always horrific to see words like papish’ on RM.”

    ——

“Completely agree. I can understand ‘tarrier’ ”

    ——

“One of my worries over this is if Scotland leaves the union,if England is isolated what happens to the Falklands. No Britain to defend them.argentina would invade and claim the area as its own.the inhabitants are British, god help them.”

    ——

” I think if Scotland voted for independence there’d be a sense of defiance from Rangers fans. The Union flag would still be flown even though what remained of the Union would have to make another flag, one with the Saltire removed.”

    ——

“Shetland would probably vote to re-join the Union in much the same way that Ulster did, then we wouldn’t need to remove the blue bits of the flag.”

    ——

    On Nationalists:

“They wouldn’t know the truth if it walked up and slapped them on the face with a wet fish”

    ——

Any assistance in translating the following would be appreciated:

” I believe that in an Independent Scotland , Freedom Of Speech would be restricted to those who don’t agree or not on the side of Nat’s as Nationalism is basically a smaller form of fascism and we could see a form of government to that Hitlers should the Nat’s take full control of this country”

There’s more of a residue of goodwill between our supporters and the supporters of most EPL clubs than there is between us and any Scottish club.

In an ideal world if we got into the EPL without being shackled to sevco all the bigotry and sectarian baggage could be left at the border.

    HH SOS

Not sure about that – there are still the NF faction within a few of English clubs, Chelski in particular – I lived in London for 15 years man, and let me tell you they still have their chip onthe shoulder about us “jocks and paddy’s” it still exists. That said I know things have improved in policing of games etc. But there would be trouble no matter what becasue we ar the foreigners and if we win games at their pads, you can be assured, there will always be the faction in Manc and London, Brum etc who would want to let us know we are not welcome! such is life, but we as Celtic supporters know how to behave when we go anywhere, after all Education begins at home!! By the way, before you start your story about the charge of the horses, it happened at the Celtic end, not the Rangers end.

I had a wee look on hun media there to while away 15 minutes before dinner and there’s a barking mad deid heid by the name OlegKuznetsov who’s come up with a conspiracy theory that we planted Craig Whyte. Even some of his hun brothers are calling this nutter one a total crackpot.

Is there anything that happened to them in the past two years that they’ve not tried to pin on Celtic or Peter Lawwell?
