Cole, Kazim-Richards, keeping the receipt

566

“News” broke this morning that Carlton Cole has left Celtic. Next they’ll be telling us the Berlin Wall has fallen.

Carlton had ‘left the building’ some time ago. Last month I asked about him in unflattering terms “Didn’t look like a Celtic player on paper or on the field, so why did we sign him?”. He was a pay-as-you-play punt, available to sign between transfer windows. If he could cut it, he’d get a game and be paid, if not, he wouldn’t cost a penny.

He didn’t work out (of course), but there’s no real harm in taking punts like this. I suspect Celtic also had a break option in Colin Kazim-Richards contract which allowed them to encourage him out of town this month. He was another bizarre looking signing who didn’t work out, but unlike Carlton, at least we got the odd shift out of Colin.

Don’t look for top-level strategy in all this but you’ll find a low-level strategy known at Celtic Park as ‘Keep the receipt” business. Get them in, get an option to make the move permanent, but give yourself an out, in case the warning signs have substance.

In short, the Carlton Cole-Colin Kazim-Richards strategy looks indiscriminate but it’s not really. Making transfer mistakes is a problem for all, but if you’re going to do it, and every club does, make cheap mistakes.

Away game first. Breaks the tradition of the champions playing at home first. Maybe we are getting to them:-)

We have nothing to fear from Hearts. It’s more about getting them off to a bad start and playing catch-up on Sevco. Hamilton home – shockeroonie! A few easy games for them early on so they can make a good start and promote themselves as being “back at the top” to prospective transfer targets before the end of August.

First game v Sevco at home. Helps them perpetuate the same club myth – Rangers had the first home game in 2011-12.

    Paranoid? Yes. Wrong? Probably not!

    Go Celtic!

So sacred that RD’s 1st SPL fixture was away to St Johnstone on a Wednesday night.

  5. If Celtic want to play friendlies once the season has begun, and wish to opt out of a league game to do so, then it should be a home game they opt out of. Why should another team have a weekend game v us moved to a midweek in November/December?

  6. Why are people complaining about fixture list ? bizarre

Celtic FC are happy and fully compliant with all the regulatory bodies running Scottish football

In the statement below Celtic FC thank said regulatory bodies, Celtic hoping to cash in with C/L qualifier and Flag day

Due to the club’s involvement, and with Celtic playing Inter Milan on August 13, the Scottish Premiership League flag will be unfurled at Celtic’s first home UEFA Champions League qualifying match, the date of which will be confirmed on Monday, June 20.

Celtic would like to thank the SPFL, UEFA and league sponsor Ladbrokes for their assistance with this matter and as this is a season book match, our season ticket holders will be able to join in the celebrations that evening on what we hope will be the start of another exciting year for the club.

August for Celtic comprises the anxiety of Champions League qualifying, and a set of intial league fixtures against the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best teams in the country.

I guess Brendan’s mettle will be well and truly tested by the end of month.

We’ll have to play Hearts away at some point, better straight off the bat than after a CL qualifier.

  10. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Hearts away first is a good omen. I remember being at Swinecastle for an opening game in the early 80’s. I think it was Jackie Dzanowski’s (sp) first game, and unbelievably Tommy Coyne scored a hatrick. I think we won 3-0.

It was some day for me. After I had escaped the environs of the stadium, with the usual (at the time) poisonous barracking and scuffles. I met up with a few people to get beers and a few African Woodbines and go to Meadowbank to see simple minds that night. I think it may have been The Beasts’ first game for Deadco, as I remember Jim Kerr getting a good laugh at the opening day results.

Ah the 80’s :))) ……………..were you there KEVJUNGLE

Yes – everybody plays everybody at some stage. My point was that an easy start for Sevco (if they win the games) helps them attract players before the window closes by allowing them to promote themselves as being “back (sic) at the top”.

Hearts and Aberdeen both have difficult starts – both play us and each other.

Maybe the computer just randomly threw things up that way.

Maybe it just randomly gave the champions a home game on the first day for the last 30 (or more?) years and this year it’s away.
