Colts and 40 years of appalling development

468

For close to two decades Celtic youth teams have dominated Scottish development leagues. We invest more in youth football than anyone else, we flood the Scottish leagues with graduates from our academy, and we harvest the occasional gem for the first team.

The current squad has Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Eoghan O’Connell (who I think has a genuine chance) and Liam Henderson, who all made the step-up but for 40 years our record in maturing youth talent has been appalling.

Care to guess the last successful striker Celtic brought through the system?

Clubs who regularly finish behind Celtic in the youth league table produce far more first-team talent, some of whom Celtic pay money to sign later in their careers. What Dundee United, Hibs, Hamilton Accies and others can do, which Celtic have been reluctant to do, it blood young players in the first team early.

Celtic’s reasons for this are valid. They have championships to win every season, and even when that is a formality, dropping points to anyone is cause for a crisis. We do not have the most conducive environment for youthful endeavours.

In recent times we’ve tried to help players bridge the gap between youth football and the Celtic first team by sending them out on loan. Callum McGregor benefited from this but it’s hard to find evidence the strategy is delivering.

Celtic have wanted a ‘colts’ team for 50 years, a place where youthful talent can come up against the harsh environment of fully grown men. I know one chairman of a successful developer of youth players who believes that if they are not thoroughly exposed to ‘real’ football between the ages of 16 and 19 they will be lost to the game by 20.

Frustration at a perceived lack of progress kicks in, then unhelpful habits take over.

No one can say with any great conviction that a colts team will solve anything, but it might. For that reason, it’s worth trying.

Time is running out for orders of books and DVDs for Christmas from the CQN Bookstore.  We’ve a great range of new and classic titles, fill your boots!

  1. Oh dear,

    So the doomsayers were correct.

What have our board signed up to?

They have their cake and they’ll eat it.

I recall a somewhat prescient post from 2012 with the author saying Rangers will be back stronger than before and the real losers in this debacle will be Celtic.

Have we sold our soul for a generation of domination?

Can you confirm and\or deny Canamalar’s understanding that the representatives of Celtic made it clear that under no circumstances will they be taking Res12 to CFCB?

surely something as fundamental as this with regards Res12 could not be misunderstood\misconstrued by only one member in attendance of the four Res12 guys.

Canamalar, I am not trying to put less or more weight on yours or any others opinion of the meeting but looking fro clarification on a fundamental point of Res12 which should not have been left open to misunderstanding at the meeting.

  3. WC,

How about…”I have not been updated on the reported meeting between the Board of Celtic PLC and the 4 representatives of the Resolution 12 campaign. Over the weekend there was conjecture about the meeting on another Celtic site. (starting on Saturday evening 40 hours ago) When I have had the opportunity to discuss what happened at the meeting and the outcomes I will comment further.”

Anyway the meeting seems to have got the PLC through the AGM. Let’s hope ‘the ball in Celtic’s net ‘ isn’t an own goal.

Fair play to the lads for their efforts, nobody could have asked for any more.

If you keep those t-shirts for a 100 years they’ll be worth a fortune.

  6. Could it not be the case that the Celtic Board are waiting for the final conclusion of the Big Tax Case before taking appropriate action.

As that case is finally up this March, I think those venting their venom should do the same.

  7. So the death of R****** COULD end up seeing me walk away from Celtic.

What a bloody mess. Should know for sure where I stand before the season

    is out. Roll on March.

  8. Until this has played out I don’t think anyone should be jumping to conclusions. There could be several reasons why Celtic PLC are not taking this forward at the moment. As I understand it the ultimate goal of Res12 is to expose the SFA? If Celtic have Regan under the thumb, why expose him? Is it not better to have him in our pocket for our longer term benefit. Let’s see what happens.

    Awe_Naw..,

It matters not a jot who was representing and implementing the boards views, what matters is that they either did not understand they were doing that job therefore could not be the subject of personal insult or as I suspect attempted to deflect from a very important discussion with the goal of bringing it to a premature closure. I think the term is termination by murder.

  10. JHJ

Res12 doesn’t hinge around the BTC finding though. The overdue payable that caused the licensing issue relates to the Wee Tax Case, which has long been resolved (it was admitted as being due back in 2011).

If that is the excuse that is being used, then it is rather flimsy.

If that is what Celtic are doing, i.e. controlling Regan, then we are actively participating in a bent game to an even greater extent than feared. The CEO of the SFA shouldn’t be under the thumb of anyone.

Oh and they reinforced their demand for secrecy as they don’t want everybody knowing what they are doing or how they are responding to our evidence and offered strategies, enough of that, when they do nothing and contribute only negatively then waiting to let them control the narrative at a later date does not make sense. In fact it indicates serious risk which is no longer plausible considering their stated intentions.

Gerry Creaney came through the youth team to become a Celtic Striker of some regard…

A fair few of us suggested a couple of years back that the biggest losers in Rangers going bust would be Celtic.

Get them back into the league, and we would want to know why.

Of course,no-one imagined then that they would still have their five stars,et al.

That our board are being seen increasingly as complicit in this really beggars belief. Do they really not give a damn about how their supporters feel?

The problem is that they only have 55k seats to sell. They can do that no bother with a decent team, such as now.

The rebels have lost, mate. Truth is a victim.

Aye we could wait for the next rumoured scandal to materialise and keep our powder dry for that to mature too, wow what an impact that would make eh.

Or we simply take each one in turn and address it that way there’s no room for confusion or obfuscation.

There is current discussion on combining res12and LNS I must say I’m not in favour.

I think, as is often the case, you are a bit touchy when it comes to posters raising questions of Paul67 and CQN with regards Res12 and jump on the defensive way too quickly.

I am sure we all understand the work you have put into this this along with the Res12 guys and appreciate your efforts in this regard on behalf of CQN and thank Paul for providing the Engine to afford you and us this effort.

However many deem CQN to be aligned with Paul67 and vice a versa and therfore would like to hear Paul67’s view on Res12 and on the boards actions or inaction as he perceives them in the form of one lead article.

Personally I don’t think that is too much to ask. A lot of posters put far more weight on Paul’s words than they do on yours or my words.

I too am interested in what Paul67 has to say in this. This is not attack on Paul67 or CQN but a basic interest in his viewpoint with regards 3 years of effort from 4 of our own posters who have given up many hours to this. CQN generally is about Paul’s viewpoint in the lead article while all the other articles are enjoyable and worthwhile it is the lead that generally adds to debate.

Do you think that if their appeal is successful in the BTC they will somehow be ‘unliquidated’?

Do you believe that Big Hauns will ask for his money back for having had to “buy” the history?

If not, you’ll know that a failure to object to the nonsense on the SPFL website, which basically declares that a 4 year old club is Scottish football’s most successful, at our expense, is not justified by the still-to-be-resolved appeal.

From reading the bits from the guys involved, this issue isn’t over yet.

Just because the club is keeping quiet does not mean they are not on top of this.

If it comes to light the club is not pursuing this matter then I will be angry as some on here. Until then I think we should refrain from insulting each other as we all want justice.

    JHJ,

And if the Plc own the narrative how will you find out they have taken no action ?

Do you expect them to provide a statement with justification for no action with all the evidence currently available ?
