Colts and 40 years of appalling development

468

For close to two decades Celtic youth teams have dominated Scottish development leagues. We invest more in youth football than anyone else, we flood the Scottish leagues with graduates from our academy, and we harvest the occasional gem for the first team.

The current squad has Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Eoghan O’Connell (who I think has a genuine chance) and Liam Henderson, who all made the step-up but for 40 years our record in maturing youth talent has been appalling.

Care to guess the last successful striker Celtic brought through the system?

Clubs who regularly finish behind Celtic in the youth league table produce far more first-team talent, some of whom Celtic pay money to sign later in their careers. What Dundee United, Hibs, Hamilton Accies and others can do, which Celtic have been reluctant to do, it blood young players in the first team early.

Celtic’s reasons for this are valid. They have championships to win every season, and even when that is a formality, dropping points to anyone is cause for a crisis. We do not have the most conducive environment for youthful endeavours.

In recent times we’ve tried to help players bridge the gap between youth football and the Celtic first team by sending them out on loan. Callum McGregor benefited from this but it’s hard to find evidence the strategy is delivering.

Celtic have wanted a ‘colts’ team for 50 years, a place where youthful talent can come up against the harsh environment of fully grown men. I know one chairman of a successful developer of youth players who believes that if they are not thoroughly exposed to ‘real’ football between the ages of 16 and 19 they will be lost to the game by 20.

Frustration at a perceived lack of progress kicks in, then unhelpful habits take over.

No one can say with any great conviction that a colts team will solve anything, but it might. For that reason, it’s worth trying.

Time is running out for orders of books and DVDs for Christmas from the CQN Bookstore.  We’ve a great range of new and classic titles, fill your boots!

    The Celtic board have Regan under their thumb?

    Thats hilarious.

    Probably the reason for the brilliant refereeing in the last two games.

    They have been told to give us everything by the football authorities.

    What you’re saying is true, but you also have to remember that some of the folks doubting the club were in the meeting, and were therefore able to read tone, and body language of those involved. Any doubts they have will be very real.

    It also needs stated that others believe progress might still be made. I become more pessimistic all the time.

    If it turns out that Celtic PLC have been giving us the runaround on res12 these last 3 years I am going to write a strongly worded letter to my local MSP. Yes Sirree Boaby! Enough is enough. I will use words like PSV Eindhoven mourinho and Karagandy.fingers crossed.:)

    I was attempting to provide an explanation rather than a justification.

  5. If the reaction time of the board on Res12 is anything to go by, how far into the 2020’s will it be before Celtic object to the SFA trying to fudge Sevco’s 2017/18 UEFA License application?

    What will you do if they haven’t. Id like to know what that

    will be more Maggie please.

  7. I took my five year old to celtic park for the first time on Saturday. Despite a very early start and a long delay getting a flight back home he was buzzing all day and has been ever since, he was most upset that he wasn’t able to wear the hoops his kit for the third day in a row today.

    Its funny how seeing things though the eyes of a five year old gives you a different perspective, and great to see what simple pleasure football and celtic can bring.

    Firstly, it was a suggestion about Regan, not a known fact.

    Secondly, even if he is, I doubt that would extend to influencing referees. If Madhun was told to favour Celtic you would be reading about it on the front pages of the red tabs.

  11. Duties under the Companies Act 2006

    There are seven general directors’ duties set out in the Companies Act, which are:

    A duty to act in accordance with the powers set out in the company’s articles;

    A duty to promote the success of the company for the benefit of its members;

    A duty to exercise independent judgment;

    A duty to exercise reasonable care, skill and diligence;

    A duty to avoid conflicts of interest;

    A duty not to accept benefits from third parties; and

    A duty to declare to the company’s other directors any interest a director has in a proposed transaction or arrangement with the company.

    “I can immediately see 2 which I think the PLC are falling foul of in relation to Res 12” – is what I was going to say namely 2 and 4. Is that actually the case though? It has taken until really very recently to prove that the licence shouldn’t have been issued to TRFC.

    Let’s say that was accepted by the club and they decided to act. What can they then do in order to fulfil their duties as above? They can’t sue for lost earnings, to do so may prevent us from participation in competitions, They could try and ensure that such a thing doesn’t happen in future and that there is much more transparency. They might argue that steps are in place, although there’s no evidence to support that really, We might not know until such time are TRFC are or are not correctly given the next Euro licence.

  12. Celtic40Me,

    Lovely post @ 3.30pm. I did the same with my son when he was 5 years of age. He bought a Celtic strip with his first wage packet last year too.

    You should save your post and remind yourself of it when he gets older!

    There is fight going on for the heart of the club at the moment, it’s worth fighting for in my opinion.

    If the suits have their way special moments like you experienced on Saturday will be lost.

    IT is a sad indictment of our PLC that they are not even prepared to go public on it.

    I think the Res12 guys have (& still are) done a great job, the thing for me is the vast majority of Celtic fans are still unaware of Res12, the vast majority of Celtic fans probably don’t care, the vast majority of Celtic fans, especially the younger generation ala the thousands at Firhill the other Friday probably want to play a team from Govan in the seasons to come…… Some have posted about their disgust with the board, which is fair enough, but am afraid it’s a very small minority in the larger scale of things, by the way I was brought up to never trust any Celtic board, I can honestly say Cqn is the only place where I even think about the board, by the way I totally understand some of the dissapointment

  15. mike in toronto on

    When I cancelled my Celtic TV, I wrote to JP Taylor and told him why I was doing it (Celtic PLC’s silence on the many issues), but that I would return if and when Celtic, at a minimum, came out and addressed the issues.

    I received a short, but polite reply from Mr. Taylor which (i) stated that, “in terms of Res 12 Celtic has been on this since 2011, prior to any other groups. Celtic has fully assisted the requisitioners in every way it could” (I’m not joking .. that is a direct quote), but (ii) otherwise didn’t seem to care whether I stayed or not.

    If enough people do the same, I suspect his answer will be very different.

    So, if supporters want things to change dont give them your money. Cancel Celtic TV or dont renew your season ticket … and, importantly, write to Mr. Taylor, tell him that you will not be renewing , and tell him why you are not renewing …..

    If you dont, accept that nothing will change.

    If enough people do, then perhaps something can still be done (although I think that it is likely too late, but we wont know unless we try ….)

    Otherwise, what will happen is that the decision will come in the big case, and Celtic will tell the world what a great job THEY did, and how this is proof that they system works, and that, there wont be an increase in the cost of a season ticket … and, if enough people give them their money, Celtic will move on like nothing ever happened.

    On a more important note …. I didn’t get a chance this weekend to post about JFH. If you are reading, I hope things turn out okay for you and your wife.

  16. It is with real disappointment I read Canamaalar’s post.

    These 4 guys have done a fantastic job to get res.12 this far.

    To read such negativity about the Plc does not surprise me and in some ways , according to type.

    It seems we may have to pin all our hopes of justice in the Supreme Court .

    Even if HMRC win is anyone confident on any action from our PLC?

    If I had any cahonas I should walk away.

    I just can’t bring myself to do that.

    So depressing

  17. Was there a big fat wummin singing after the Res12 meeting I wonder ?

    Michelle Mc Manus perchance ?

    Is it a secret ?

    Was any of the board wearing broon brogues ?

    Where they hidden under the big table ?……….

    So many questions……….

  18. MIKE IN TORONTO

    Mike i’ve had CTV since it came into existance, but i am going to post on the wall tomorrow night about res12 and see what the oversea’s guy think about it.

    Probably be deleted by Admin :-)

  19. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 19TH DECEMBER 2016 2:15 PM

    The failure/reluctance to pass Res12 and go to UEFA is the sum and substance of it all but perhaps the consequences of doing it would be worse than the consequences of not doing it but how will we know?

    The other part is not to divert from that point which was forcibly made at the meeting, but if there is another way to put SFA on the spot and it is taken then as long as the cat is skint does it matter.

    The simple fact is no one knows the grounds on which a licence was granted and that needs to be established and there can be no excuse for not doing so or at the very least making the effort.

    I thought your summary spot on.
