Colts and 40 years of appalling development

468

For close to two decades Celtic youth teams have dominated Scottish development leagues. We invest more in youth football than anyone else, we flood the Scottish leagues with graduates from our academy, and we harvest the occasional gem for the first team.

The current squad has Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Eoghan O’Connell (who I think has a genuine chance) and Liam Henderson, who all made the step-up but for 40 years our record in maturing youth talent has been appalling.

Care to guess the last successful striker Celtic brought through the system?

Clubs who regularly finish behind Celtic in the youth league table produce far more first-team talent, some of whom Celtic pay money to sign later in their careers. What Dundee United, Hibs, Hamilton Accies and others can do, which Celtic have been reluctant to do, it blood young players in the first team early.

Celtic’s reasons for this are valid. They have championships to win every season, and even when that is a formality, dropping points to anyone is cause for a crisis. We do not have the most conducive environment for youthful endeavours.

In recent times we’ve tried to help players bridge the gap between youth football and the Celtic first team by sending them out on loan. Callum McGregor benefited from this but it’s hard to find evidence the strategy is delivering.

Celtic have wanted a ‘colts’ team for 50 years, a place where youthful talent can come up against the harsh environment of fully grown men. I know one chairman of a successful developer of youth players who believes that if they are not thoroughly exposed to ‘real’ football between the ages of 16 and 19 they will be lost to the game by 20.

Frustration at a perceived lack of progress kicks in, then unhelpful habits take over.

No one can say with any great conviction that a colts team will solve anything, but it might. For that reason, it’s worth trying.

  1. Is it possible that Celtic plc have a skeleton or two hidden away in a cupboard. Never to see the light of day, so long as we don’t rock the boat re Res 12?

People in glass houses, and all that…

Let me state categorically that I have no thoughts on whether this to be true, or not. But would it be a great surprise to find that a plc board bent some rules at some point in our long history.

Again, not suggesting Celtic plc did anything as bad as the Govan mob, but just throwing it out there that perhaps the boards hands are somewhat tied.

    Is this even remotely possible?

    TET,

I think BRTH covered it a while ago when he identified that the clubs in Scotland prefer self-certification hence their reluctance to sign up to make the FFP rules mandatory.

It would also introduce transparency and accountability and any organisation not having to operate under the restrictions of transparency an accountability will be repulsed at the idea that they will have to acknowledge and respond to all stakeholders, the crux is, they do not want to be answering to minority shareholders or supporters and any change would have to take this into account, the status quo with fine refinement is the IMO their limit, they like the opaque and secretive operation conditions it suits their elitist structure, reaffirming their ‘we know best’ arrogance, they really don’t like hard questions or identification of obvious inconsistencies that show them up in a bad light, which is why they practice strategic responses to deflect and distract to try and kill the topic or at least create animosity that indicates their resistance to such questions or observations.

See it every week at project meetings and it works on some people,

I agree mistakes can be rectified somewhere down the line, but one of the Gang of Four as we speak is posting that he does not trust the CFC board , so I fear mistakes are being made by both sides, as I more or less said in my post, I think this has ran its course, a little bit of decorum and respect should at least be given a shot, and I don’t think it’s proper that one of the Gang of Four is on this blog slagging the CFC board, only my opinion.

The meeting was a bit of a litmus test to try and establish how matters stood in terms of handing over ownership of the issue.

It was made clear from the outset of the meeting the requisitioners could not take matters any further as result of the final response from UEFA.

    …Gerry,

fair question and if its true for our Plc, then it needs to be addressed, making a public statement admitting to any such breaches would simply undermine anyone who thought they had power over us and would show everyone they were serious about change. While we fear disclosure of breaches we submit to corruption and accept nothing will change.

What is abundantly clear is that the process adopted so far is getting nowhere so no point continuing with it.

This was discussed and alternatives proposed that I think would address the issue of process as well as producing a result acceptable to the majority, regardless if it is what they want to hear or not.

Feelings are neither right nor wrong, they just are, but what is done as a result of those feelings can be right or wrong.

The trick is channeling those feelings in the direction of right.

On a lighter note slagging the Board is the raison d’etre of some CQN bloggers and defending the Board of others.

    Tony D..,

Three years of respect had led us nowhere, we are almost exactly in the same place we were three years ago, asking the Plc to request the CFCB to investigate the granting of the license. The difference is, now I understand the Plc never intended making that request, and that you were right all along they strung us along and wasted our time and effort regarding criminal fraud that impacted Celtic CFC’s market and brand value, hence my distrust and reduced respect are justified, like you have always said and I now agree, I do not expect any change in the Plc’s position so I will call a spade a spade, its how I see it and you are allowed a different opinion however your opinion is not based on experience mine is.

To be honest I fully expect res12 to die now in fact I’m thinking of pulling the plug myself as the Plc have never been serious and have more in common and show more loyalty to external stakeholders such as the SFA, UEFA the SNP, the Scottish Police than those they depend on to financially support the club, just my opinion like.

  12. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Below is the email I just sent to JP, after I had sent notice to Celtic tv that I was cancelling my subscription. It’s clumsy, and I am sure a futile gesture, but I feel better. Of course it might not be so futile, if they received a lot more like it.

    Dear JP

I have just sent notice to Celtic TV that I do not wish to renew my subscription. I have not been a regular attendee at games for a number of years due to the fact that I worked weekends and live in the Highlands. However I did my best support the club through Celtic tv, regular purchases of merchandise, and subsidising my daughters purchases of season tickets for four consecutive seasons.

Unfortunately, from this point onwards I feel I can no longer offer any support, financial or otherwise, of the club, whilst the current board continue their stance of inaction on the issues surrounding Resolution 12. I shall also be asking my daughter not to contribute.

I can not understand the board’s current policy of inaction in this matter, and can only assume they are in some way complicit in the recent instances of apparent mal-governance by the Scottish football authorities.

I understand there is nothing you can do for me directly on this issue, but would be grateful if you could at least report this gesture to the PLC Board.

I am a fourth generation Celtic supporter, and have supported the club all of my 57 years, so this is not a stance I take lightly, but can see no sense in offering my continued support to the club.

What the SFA presides over does not seem to be a sport, and I can no longer financially support a club that does nothing to challenge this state of affairs.

    Yours sincerely

As punishment for wearing poppies in the World Cup qualifier against England, FIFA have told Scotland that they must play Lee Wallace in the remaining games in the campaign.

  17. Many of the supporters I speak to don’t know about Res12 and some of those that do aren’t that bothered. I can only speak for myself but I find that CQN is not representative of the Celtic support. Fair play to those that take a moral stand but such gestures will ultimately be futile. Plenty of others will pay the 49 quid to see thems and more at that. The PLC know this and will calculate accordingly.

Please don’t shoot the messenger, I’m merely expressing how i’m seeing things from my point of view.

As members of the SFA and the SPFL Celtic FC have been party to a fraud. A fraud that many on here have called the biggest scandal in sporting history. Possibly even within a CQN article ..my memory is fading. If you can just shake that off due to your love/need of Celtic then fine I understand that I have the same problem, but this is all been done for the love/need of the Old Firm. Don´t kid yourself on. If the BTC finds in favour of HMRC then Celtic have to come out and gut the entire Scottish football industry. If they don´t then they are part of the problem.

I as you all know since my very first post here on CQN in 2005 truly believe that they are Old Firm. On a personal note I am looking forward to it´s conclusion this spring one way or another.

If the PLC do the proper thing and pursue the exoneration of our descendants treatment and support everything they stood for then we there will be no stopping us on and off the park.

I am pretty convinced that there will be a final parting of ways this summer.

Which will be good for everyone.

So again thanks to the Resolutioners for shining a light where it really needed to be shone.

  19. Braw,

I wonder what made me think of this;)

    Cat got your tongue?

The English Navy used to use a whip called “Cat-o’-nine-tails” for flogging. The pain was so severe that it caused the victim to stay quiet for a long time. Another possible source could be from ancient Egypt, where liars’ and blasphemers’ tongues were cut out and fed to the cats.

Not enough room to swing a cat,

The original phrase was probably ‘not room to swing a cat-o’nine-tails’, and dates from the time when sailors were flogged on board ship.

    Auldheid,

what dirty linnen could our board possibly have hidden, come on now, this board is by all accounts the bee’s knees and far more savvy than anyone else in the world.

    ==========

Actually I wasn’t thinking of Celtic having anything to hide. I was thinking more of UEFA who might not want their new system questioned.

UEFA are not in the business of putting clubs out of existence. FFP is meant to prevent that happening, so it’s UEFA, who only gave verbal approval to the June submission in Sept 2011 after RFC had gone out of both UEFA competitions, who might prefer no questions are asked about what took place between March 2011 and May 2011 when they were provided with the list of licences granted.

Against that UEFA would be taking one hell of a risk in allowing their rules on fair play be circumvented because it was inconvenient that RFC would pay the price of full application, but who knows who spoke to whom in those circles?

A risk magnified btw had RFC put out Malmo and 7 days later tax collectors turned up.

I speculate but the resistance to providing an acceptable answer, including msm not giving the questions the light of day, sort of points suspicion that there is a lot more at stake here than we think.

    Auldheid,

And as long as the Huns remain too shoitey to rob us of trophies then indeed Res12 does not matter.

However we Auldheid lived through the days when they were not that bad that with a little help from friends in the right places we were consistently robbed.

The SFA and the SPFL and it´s member are in the business of putting clubs out of business.

This is why Dermot Desmond chose the word relegated to describe what happened to Rangers (note no break in the timeline) and his wish to play them “every week”
