Colts and 40 years of appalling development

468

For close to two decades Celtic youth teams have dominated Scottish development leagues. We invest more in youth football than anyone else, we flood the Scottish leagues with graduates from our academy, and we harvest the occasional gem for the first team.

The current squad has Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Eoghan O’Connell (who I think has a genuine chance) and Liam Henderson, who all made the step-up but for 40 years our record in maturing youth talent has been appalling.

Care to guess the last successful striker Celtic brought through the system?

Clubs who regularly finish behind Celtic in the youth league table produce far more first-team talent, some of whom Celtic pay money to sign later in their careers. What Dundee United, Hibs, Hamilton Accies and others can do, which Celtic have been reluctant to do, it blood young players in the first team early.

Celtic’s reasons for this are valid. They have championships to win every season, and even when that is a formality, dropping points to anyone is cause for a crisis. We do not have the most conducive environment for youthful endeavours.

In recent times we’ve tried to help players bridge the gap between youth football and the Celtic first team by sending them out on loan. Callum McGregor benefited from this but it’s hard to find evidence the strategy is delivering.

Celtic have wanted a ‘colts’ team for 50 years, a place where youthful talent can come up against the harsh environment of fully grown men. I know one chairman of a successful developer of youth players who believes that if they are not thoroughly exposed to ‘real’ football between the ages of 16 and 19 they will be lost to the game by 20.

Frustration at a perceived lack of progress kicks in, then unhelpful habits take over.

No one can say with any great conviction that a colts team will solve anything, but it might. For that reason, it’s worth trying.

Indeed but how long did the liability exist and was there a promise it would be paid before 1st June, the last day that the list of licenses granted had to be with UEFA? There might have been an extenuating circumstances plea on the quiet.

Your email is remarkably similar to the one I sent to JPT. I can tell from your post that it was not something you did lightly.

I suspect that yours will not be the only such email they receive in the next few months. Hopefully, you and others like you will help the Board come to their senses. I wont say that I am confident, but I am hopeful that something good will come as a result.

Until then, I still go a bit stir crazy when the games are on …. I may have to start a CQN support group for those not watching the games! Wanna join?

Yer also far from being anybodies mug.

But, yer niceness dwarfs yer muglessness…imho

Ye see, Cellic FC should have hammered the nail through the cheating hun FC’s heart when they applied for a licence to enter div 3.

Some will say that it wasn’t Cellic FC’s call to intervene well….I think that this was along the same lines as the shame-game got-summit p#sh…..imho.

At the shame-game, Cellic should have called they’re own media conference to inform everybody outside of Scotland, why they wouldn’t be attending and, at the same time….projected the ‘truth’ as to what type of country Scotland really is and, as a consequence….Cellic would probably be playing outside of Scotland by now…imho.

At the huns request for a licence to get into div 3….Cellic FC should have insisted that, the huns be banned from football whilst under investigation of….

    The £140 million swindle….

The 22 trophies all won whilst cheating the tax man, never mind concentrating on 2011….Mo Johnston came to the huns from Nantes coz…the hunslooked after his £150,000 tax bill….aye!

Ye see, what I don’t get is….2011 is the switcherydoo season right….?

Well, how come Cellic FC’s Dr John Reid pointed out at the time that, Cellic FC had a ‘dossier’ re: all the honest-mistakes on the pitch to help the huns get the CL-money-pot….for 3 seasons in a row ???

Ye see, the Cellic supporters have / will historically fight a war vs the Scottish establishment.

Now, how can Cellic supporters expect to win this war when, Cellic PLC are in bed with this establishment and, they have been since the days when Fergus McCann got control of the club.

Do ye think that the Kelly’s and White’s would have looked away from….

    £140 million ?

22 trophies stolen despite the dossier ?

    LNS’s white wash ?

Do you think that the Kelly’s and White’s would have come out and said that…

….”Putting Rangers FC out of the same league as Celtic FC, was the worst decision ever!”

…as Fergus McCann did a couple of years ago when, season tickets wurny shifting ?

Also,…BRTH said on these pages that….”Fergus set up a PLC at Celtic Park…to keep the fans on the outside.”

Ah mean, how many souls have been sold at Cellic Park since 1994 ?

The gang of four will one day, reach the high levels that they desrve to but,….I think that the PLC set up will have to be ripped apart for that to happen.

God Bless the Gang Of Four !!!!

Right need to go MissGFTB wants to play Pokemon triumphs

  7. Well if you had dump like Barrowfield ,which is still ,then what chance had any youngsters, progressing to the first team,I have said that Lawell and co, should have upgraded Barrowfield,a long time ago, there are good pitches down there,so I don’t think it would cost much to build another academy, with a couple of stands, and upgrade, the changing rooms,

The time to modernise and clean up Scottish football has well and truly gone. Statistically it is on a downward spiral. Sir David Murray´s reign as Chairman of Rangers was sandwiched between Dundee Utd. getting to a European final and Celtic getting to a European final.

It should have been cleaned up then Instead of embarking on a financial arm´s race like the USA V Russia problem being that once the arms race was won by Celtic we found out that we were communist`s as well.

I truly believe that the board want to see a vibrant Rangers with it´s history intact so that the Old Firm can get into a bigger league. Pie in the Sky stuff.

It is not easy to understand why the resolution 12 debate appears to be drawing to a close I have no idea why that should be ? Auldheid has told us frequently that things were moving along but he could not reveal anymore at these times but he would eventualy udate everyone when he had enough information to make it worthwhile. It appears from the outside looking in that Celtic do not wish to take this any further I believe the four Bhoys who were pursuing resolution 12 on behalf of the support will have done there best but they were up against a board of business men when the board and the four should have been on the same page I dont believe they ever were but now it appears only Celtic know why that is and do not look to want to tell the support why.My thanks to the four Bhoys you have done your best.H.H.

    You were all told.

  12. Res 12 was always going to be a loser. Celtic alone could and would not do anything. Much to the disappointment of most of us, but understandable.

  13. My friends in Celtic,

Supporting Celtic is emotional. It’s like a drug.

I enjoy my days out at Paradise, I enjoy watching on the goggle box when I cannot go.

Put simply I cannot give it up, nor do I want to. Far too many memories, far too many future glories.

May I again share my admiration for the Rrs12 guys. Down, not yet out and definitely not forgotten.

If I could walk away I would attend the Glasgow Warriors games. Fabulous entertainment at Scotstoun. But it would never, never, ever be the same.

I need my Celtic fix, especially to detract myself from a mad world. Getting madder by the day.

  14. GFTB,

It’s like when an economy is going great and everyone (mostly) is doing well and working. Their houses are going up in value and things are good.

Then the cycle changes and bang. Job losses, foreclosures etc.

The same will happen in Scottish football at that point the lads you describe will start asking questions.

The game for the PLC is to try and make as much money as they can right now.

DD is the majority owner of the ‘Celtic Franchise.’

He is described as a ‘Financier’, that is another way of saying ‘profiteer’.

He will squeeze as much as he can out of ‘the Celtic Franchise’, that’s what he does. PL is there to micromanage that.

That’s why we have areas in Celtic Park that Paul67 described as ‘family targetted areas’.

It’s all about a return on the dollar.

Who knows what they are scared of?

    All the best.

  17. Thom

I have said many times that I would rather we jacked it in all together than be part of the sham that is scoddish football.

As has been said the time has gone for cleaning up the the game, the game is so bent in scotland it will never be clean, the corruption starts at the very top.

I also believe that the will to clean up is not there, a clean level playing field is not good for business, imagine if we did have a level playing field on the park, a game with honest and fair referees, we would prob win the treble every season, that is defo not good for business, it stands to reason that competition is the aim, but the rest are so far behind……………………….the corruption and a cheating cabal is the answer.

    HH

  18. CLOGHER, what we need is some Celtic supporting millionaires to fund us for free. How much per year to cover wages alone? Or if one of our CQNEer moaners wins the lotto, let’s say 6 million, I wonder how much he would gift to Celtic.

  19. TET

I dont think a clean game exists in football, too much money involved now for it to be sport , this news today on Res 12 has further sickened me,I was holding onto the hope that given the evidence the board would act, silly me again, any inclination of me going back has been shelved, a personal gesture but thats all I can do as an individual.

  20. Can any of the Res 12 guys please advise the definitive position of the Celtic board….. have you been told that they will not be taking Res 12 forward? And that it is now at an end… or…. as the chairman indicated at the agm, they are considering all the NEW facts provided and, I assume, discussed at the recent meeting of board and Res 12 guys…

We have all been very very patient for too long now we need to know if it is finished or still a progressing… if it is the former we need to DEMAND a statement from the board to that affect….failing that I and I would encourage all other shareholders to write to The Chairman demanding an answer…..

We all at least can decide as individually and collectively what action we might wish to take to let these custodians know we will not be taken for second class mugs …..I note on etims that apparently the board members attending were disrespectful to the Res 12 guys, is that the case ? If so it is absolutely shocking and beneath contempt …. “who are these people we demand to know”

Apologies for the rant but please can I have answers to put me out of my misery and can get on with life ……HH

  21. Dessybhoy

I think most of us are a wee bit gutted with the news, but some have said from the onset that the suits wouldn’t do a thing.

I honestly thot that as this is about the governance of the game they would have been keen to show the support that they were indeed wanting to see the game and the rules applied fairly, obviously they don’t see things that way.

What really gets me is the SFA and UEFA have invited the club to persue things with the CFCB, yet they refuse to do so, that bothers me big time.

    HH

  22. I cannot understand the boards stance, I wont even try, if they wanted to tell us they would, clearly dont think enough are bothered and hope it dies a death.

  23. DD is the majority owner of the ‘Celtic Franchise.’

DD is not the majority share owner. He is the largest shareholder, but does not hold a majority.

  24. Bob Loblaw

Correct, but it was agreed at an AGM that he could increase his shareholding in excess of what would usually trigger a complete buyout of other shareholders, without him having to launch a takeover.

I think you are wrong with the young team, we have been cheated forever but now the good guys are in the driving seat (Brendan & co) the economy can go up or down, house prices likewise but the love of Celtic is unconditional, I refer to one of my nephews a lot on here, during the BoS sponsored 9 @ row he actually cried one day Laudrop (who they couldn’t afford) broke away and scored through his 14yr old tears he asked “uncle, do we ever beat them” my reply was days like this will make the victories even sweeter, he is now in his 30s with 2 teenage girls who attend Celtic park with their STs…….
