Coming of Age Day at Celtic Park

478

Celtic Park was packed with an expectant crowd 11 years ago when Celtic took a two goal lead into the second leg of a Champions League play-off round.  Many of us felt it was to be a sort of Coming of Age.  After our long hard slog throughout the 90s we were champions and ruthlessly swept aside Ajax in the first leg.

After the full time whistle arms were aloft in celebration but only after an incredibly tense 90 minutes which saw the visitors win the game and fail to convert some decent chances.

Four years after our last entry into the Champions League this new Celtic side have a Coming of Age opportunity tonight.  Last season they showed their mettle to overcome a daunting deficit early in the season to win as comfortable champions, with or without penalties applied to opponents for employing more footballers than they could afford.

While the players may reach a new stage in their development tonight is as much about the supporters who have been part of the struggle in recent seasons.  This is your reward for all those hard times when your club paid their bills but had victory snatched away from them by others who were playing to different rules.

Bring your singing voice tonight.

Watched the V T again yesterday. He's a right wee character isnt he? He's got so much love to give and just loves his wee sister. Looked at my to youngest grankids last night and thank the Lord they are so healthy.

  2. Philbhoy – It’s just the beginning!

No don’t live there the company I work for has offices not far from the course so I occasionally pop over to hook balls from the driving range in prep for our annual Algarve golfing trip.

  3. Talkback on BBC Radio Ulster.

Spokesmen for both the Church of Ireland & the Presbyterian Church have just roundly condemned the disturbances by Orange/ Black Parades at last weeks trouble outside a Catholic church & questioned the claim to Christianity by these orders.

    Fair play to them.

These marchers are fast running out of apologists.

This only highlights the hypocricy of Lisburn City Council who have just decided to give the Orange Order the Freedom of the City.

What a crazy world these people inhabit.

    Thanks!

Good to have that over and done ;-)

BTW: No offence, but I think we dodged a bullet with Markus Henriksen. He’s had a few good games and was regarded a wonderkid, but this year he’s not been on the same level.

    Sounds familiar?

I really hope he was being cute saying that. We have 3 strikers ( excluding Murphy who should be away tomorrow) of whom 1 is out till the end of September and another is an 18 year old kid

I am very much in the ” Don’t count your chickens ” camp .. Strange things do happen.

The game in Helsingborg was a strange one . They could have won 3-2 . Celtic could have won 6-0 .

Helsingborgs are not a great team but they do have the European basics -pace and the ability to play pass and move football.. Had their final ball been better Celtic might have had a big problem .

Tonight ——- avoid those risky passes across the defense / avoid those risky going nowhere square balls across the midfield . Don’t give the ball away . don’t play hit it and hope football . Close the glaring gap between the defense and the midfield .

    Concentrate ! Concentrate ! Concentrate !.

There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig

“Well, whatcha’ gonna do about it?” he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears.

“Come on, man,” the biker says, “I didn’t think you’d CRY. I can’t stand to see a man crying.”

“This is the worst day of my life,” I say. “I’m a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don’t have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife with another man . . . and then my dog bit me.”

    “So . . . I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve;

and then you show up and drink the whole thing!…. But enough about me,

    How are you doing?”

    The act of a desperate hun I’m afraid… ;)

  12. I’m not in the slightest bit nervous….lots of anticipation, though. I hope TW at least gets a run out at some point….Bhoy to Mhan,he’s earned it.

After consulting my Confessor,I have received dispensation to get SkySports after a fruitless quest to find somewhere decent to watch tonight’s epic match here in rain sodden Bournemouth, which is kinda crazy.

Now…a thought…if Celtic got its media rights in its own grip, the a pay per view deal could be an earner. I’ve just paid £22 essentially just to watch tonight. Sure,I’ll take the rest,la Liga etc.,. for the 30 days, but I’ve basically shelled out to watch Celtic tonight, because it cannot, must not,be missed!

Apologies for the sweary word in my first ever CQN post. I should stop visiting the enemy sites. Best leave them to fester in their own mire.

  18. £21Mn riding on tonight according to Evening Times.

The money is made up of £4.4m for qualifying for the group stage.

There is then a match bonus of £2.75m for playing the six games in the group.

But the bulk of the cash from Uefa comes via the TV pool, which has been significantly increased year on year, and this season would guarantee Celtic at least £8.3m.

As Scotland’s sole representatives in tomorrow’s draw, that would mean a cheque for £15.45m firing straight into the Parkhead club’s coffers.

With three home gates from the group stage games to be added to the pot – 58,000 fans paying on average £100 per package – another £5.8m would be accrued.

There is also £833,000 up for grabs for every game won at the group stage, and £416,000 for a draw, plus commercial spin-offs in the form of merchandising and bonuses from sponsors.

All of which combines to make tonight’s second leg tie against Helsingborgs, in financial terms, the most important ever staged at the famous stadium.

  19. Firstly congratulations to BB for Wee Oscar podium a very proud moment for us all :-)

Absolutely gutted to be stuck down South today and missing the game I know the atmosphere is going to be something very special indeed. Hoping I can talk the bar man into putting on the football rather than the Opening ceremony fingers crossed for me!
