Commons future beyond 2017

341

When Kris Commons’ new contract expires in 2017, he will be the same age Lubomir Moravcik was when he joined Celtic as a 33-year-old in 1998.  We now mock those who mocoked Celtic for signing the Slovak genius.  While this may be Commons last contract, if the player applies himself as professionally over the next two years as he has since arriving at Celtic four years ago, his twilight years will continue to be effective.

He is our fulcrum.  When you write Celtic match reports these days you find yourself sampling your Commons notes, whereas pretty much everything of note the rest of the team does is recorded.  He is not the most industrious and will not feature high on many recorded metrics, but he’s the archetypal Moneyball footballer: an over 30 and apparently the wrong shaped marvel.

  1. I’m happy Commons has signed a new deal, but I wouldn’t have been gutted if he left.

He’s been an excellent player who hasn’t been at his best so far this season.

I don’t think he would make our strongest eleven, I would be surprised if he starts v Inter at home, and shocked if he starts against them away.

I don’t think he’s nearly as creative as some make out. That said, he offers the squad something different, in that he is absolutely lethal around the 18 yard box, and that threat is invaluable when playing packed defences.

All in all, as I said I’m glad he stayed, he and his missus seem genuinely delighted, and it adds to the feel good factor of the last few weeks.

On a separate note, noticed a few posters assuming the league is won since we reached the top of the league, and I’d just like to point out that Aberdeen have also strengthened, and only have the league to focus on.

    Game on.

Ha it could also be an indication of how we’ve downsized but I see Commons as the guy in this team who might create us something from nothing, similar to what Lubo did in his time.

Speaking to a D Utd fan a few mins ago, he is ragin that Celtic bought their 2 best players. Said it reminded him of Murray doing same with RFC, says we’re basically buying the League Cup and distroying competition in Scotland.

Can’t print my reply to him.

Commons should start at home vs Inter, chances may be at a minimum and he is one you can rely on to at least work the keeper when in good positions. I would drop Stokes for that game – can make things happen but often needs a number of attempts to do so, not as clever as Commons and decision making sometimes poor. Apart from that I do love him though:)

I agree with that. So many who have gone now, would have smiled the broadest of smiles after all that they put up with in the past.

  11. Commons won’t lose his pace (he doesn’t have) or his ability. The key is to keep him motivated.

Kris Commons has shown more recently why he is such an important player for us. I think he also showed by his earlier absence how pivotal he is to a team playing football.

Whether it was the faltering contract renewal negotiations or a short term fitness issue after injury, he seemed listless for a spell but he is more energetic now and Ronnie is seeing exactly what he brings to the team.

    Sadly,correct.

There are policies out there crying out to be grasped to our bosom which would engender faith in the party as being, once more,of the people.

And pull in votes like nobody’s business at the same time.

For example, renationalise rail and the utilities. Stop and reverse creeping privatisation of the NHS.

Redistribute the tax burden in a fairer manner. I recall my Dad telling me never to worry about paying tax. It meant you were working. Not paying tax meant you weren’t.

Not now. It just means you can afford an expert in tax avoidance.

There are loads of examples of where Labour could do right by the country, and by themselves. That no-one has the balls to grasp the nettle and take on self-interest explains why such as yourself will no longer have anything to do with them.

    Back to my beer.
