Commons future beyond 2017

341

When Kris Commons’ new contract expires in 2017, he will be the same age Lubomir Moravcik was when he joined Celtic as a 33-year-old in 1998.  We now mock those who mocoked Celtic for signing the Slovak genius.  While this may be Commons last contract, if the player applies himself as professionally over the next two years as he has since arriving at Celtic four years ago, his twilight years will continue to be effective.

He is our fulcrum.  When you write Celtic match reports these days you find yourself sampling your Commons notes, whereas pretty much everything of note the rest of the team does is recorded.  He is not the most industrious and will not feature high on many recorded metrics, but he’s the archetypal Moneyball footballer: an over 30 and apparently the wrong shaped marvel.

    ASA Verdict

    Quote

Council considered that the ads made clear that the vast majority of information contained within them was the advertiser’s own opinion. Statements such as “we firmly believe”, “we regard” and “we totally agree” confirmed that these ads were a presentation of the collective viewpoint of Celtic supporters, and they considered that the average consumer was likely to regard the ads as such. As explained in our previous ruling, Council accepted that although run by a different legal entity, that Rangers Football Club (RFC) was still the same football club.

In this instance, the ads are providing the opinion that Celtic supporters consider Rangers Football Club to be a new club, based on the legal entity of the club. Therefore, they are not making claims that are in breach of our previous ruling about a different related ad. Advertisers are also allowed to express their own opinion, provided it is clear it is such, and they are allowed to present their ad in a good light, provided they do not breach the Code. Council base their decisions on how we consider the average consumer will interpret ads. The average consumer is deemed to be reasonably well-informed and circumspect. As the ads made clear that it is the advertiser’s own opinion, and as numerous readers are already clearly well-informed about the football club’s status, they considered that they were unlikely materially to mislead consumers. Nor did they consider that presenting this view was irresponsible or likely to cause serious or widespread offence. Therefore, Council considered the ads unlikely to breach the Code

  7. It’s good to hear Kris Commons talking abut wanting to improve (even though he is a decrepit old man in his 30s)

Have had some worries about Ronny’s tactical abilities but have total admiration for his commitment to improving each player.

If every player just improves a little bit then the team improves at least as much.

  8. There was something about sevco egm on 5 live ten minutes ago , at work so couldn’t hear it properly

  9. Paul67,

I hope you’re right about Kris Commons. I still wonder if he can truly fit in to our manager’s system. I don’t think he has had been particularly good this season, and certainly not against European opposition.

  10. Personal thoughts

    1. Who is Celtic`s most skillful player – Forrest (GMS may surpass him though)

    2. Most influential – Brown (Different side when he is no there)

    3. Hardest working – Hard to pick one. They all work hard but I think Izzy shades it.

    4. Best passer – Bitton

    5. Classiest – VVD

    6. Popular ( with the support)? – Izzy

7.Confident – Commons just shades it for me. Always looks confident even when off form and shoots when others wouldn’t.

A bit disappointed that nobody asked Ronny if he was told that he must play SA, GMS , KC and young Duffy in every game!

Some very interesting quotes from the PC.

I think that Kris had to earn that extension over the last few games and it shows in his performances since Christmas.

Even allowing for injury, he looked like the square peg in the new system.

The comment about being also a defensive player resonates in a change in KC’s responsibilities, which, I think, he has acknowledged.

No jersey will be automatically handed out.

    Well done, all round.

  13. Hamiltontim the behaviour of the Catholic church tells me enough.

They should be shouting from the rooftops about this but they aren’t. They went quiet after the meeting with salmond. Of course they will not say they will support the OB but they aren’t doing much about it.

    Ergo a deal was done.

    Simple.

  14. Paul,

While I see your point re the comparison between Kris and Lubo, and I do, but there is an immense gulf between the two in regards talent. I mean, dear Lubo would have been a first team regular with the very very best, but I can’t say that about Kris

In the circumstances, he is the most creative player we have and he’s good all right, but the gulf between the two is purely caused by the diminishing revenue streams.

On another topic, I can’t believe that we are concerned about going to Dundee at the weekend. Goodness me, we would have considered that an absolute stonewaller not so long ago – – it really does show how far we have come over the years.

  16. Sevco announces EGM for 4th March in London and provides some info on the Lying King:

“In August 2013 David King was convicted on 41 counts of breach of s.75 of the South African Income Tax Act. As part of the plea which led to those convictions he agreed to pay a sum in Rand which equates to approximately £40,000,000 in respect of unpaid tax, and either to pay a fine or accept a prison sentence. The Board understand that Mr King elected to pay the fine.

The link below is to a South African Revenue Service press release which gives details of the convictions:

    http://www.sars.gov.za/media/mediareleases/pages/29-august-2013—joint-media-statement-–-settlement-between-the-state-and-mr-dc-king.aspx

In addition the following comments about Mr King were made by a judge in a different South African legal case, to which the link is as follows:

    http://www.lexisnexis.co.za/pdf/FPI-2012-Tax-Planning-Jerry-Botha-Case1103820066October2010.pdf

Mr King has subsequently been identified in the media as the person identified as “Mr N” in that case. Those comments include these statements:

“…he deliberately misrepresented the facts of the case…”

“he has no respect for the truth and does not hesitate to lie… if he thinks it will be to his advantage”

“there can be little doubt that on most occasions [he] lied…”
