Commons, Hartson and some real Celtic heroes

907

Had a great time at the Celtic Supporters Association Rally last night.  It was a great celebration of all that is good about our club, with thousands of pounds raised for the John Hartson Foundation.  Neil Lennon spoke warmly of John, about his courage and ability.  As well as recognising the great achievements of this season, CSA Player of the Year, Kris Commons, could not hide his disappointment that we are not going for a treble next week.  Hibs will have their hands full with him at Hampden next week.

I’ve never heard a footballer talk as John Hartson did.  He was clearly emotional as he took the microphone from the manager but soon go into his flow.  He told us about the three hours spent in the car before telling his family the diagnosis of his illness.  His achievements as a footballer are remarkable and John is very proud of them.  His absence through injury in Seville clearly hurt.  Did it pass a crucial advantage to Porto?  John thinks so.

His own failings were put out there with the disarming confidence that only someone who has climbed a few personal mountains can do.  The ‘hangers-on’, who filled his days a few years ago, had their cards marked.

Reamonn Gormley’s parents, Jim and Ann, were also guests of the Association.  Jim asked me to pass on a thank you from him and Ann to all Celtic fans for what they have done for them and the Thai Tims in the last two years.  Their world will never be the same again but the support they have received from the Celtic Family has overwhelmed them.  Your community has done very well, but there is nothing new in that.

With supporters like we have our club is in good hands.   Well done to all who carry out the thankless tasks running busses, organising fundraisers and keeping the moral compass pointing in the right direction.

Tell ye what you 4 took some beating last night.

    Did TTT find a loo?

  2. John Hartson had been on fire in the months prior to the final . I would say in the best form of his life . Chris Sutton was back in for the final but he wasnt fully match fit.

The teams were closely matched and he might have made the difference.

@SoccerAMSo according to McLeish Fire by Kasabian was the anthem on the ‘rangers’ bus.. He left in 2006, fire was released in 2009. Good one

  4. Loved BBJ to bits – and he loved us back!

    He still does.

Would he have made a difference in Seville? Would like to think so. We will never know.

His goal at Anfield in the QF was a highlight of that season.

    HH!!

  5. PFayr, I think you’re right.

    WeefratheTim, I try.

TTTT, I’ll echo that sentiment to Stephen Black, thank you, Stephen.

    Bada Bing, thanks.

  6. If John Hartson hadn’t scored another goal bar that one at Anfield, he would always be a Celtic legend to me. Great great goal and one of the best feelings ever walking through Liverpool after the game. (And I do know about Alan Thompson’s contribution.)

  7. Remember BBJ scoring 4 against the sheep during the Seville season, sometime before Christmas.

    HH!!

It looks like the team finishing 7th will get promotion from 4th tier of english football – playoffs you either love them or hate them

  9. Big Bad John would have won us the Cup in Seville, totally convinced of that.

but then i also thought if we had kept lubo one more year he would have done it as well.

at the match i thought we were behind and allways chasing the game, and were not on top at any point.

however i watched it again recently, and we had really good possession , and moves mostly broke down with the Porto cheats, BBJ would have made the difference

  10. Sky must have amended their schedule to take in the Highland derby …..we were originally on the sky live listings

Who is really interested in the guff from Dingwall played on a tattie field …..that is absenting the Highland Massive

I wonder if CF has the final version of the 5 way agreement. Now that’d be interesting…

  12. John Hartson told the same story at Vinnie’s Bar Raploch Stirling last weekend. Forget about the fundraising aspects of these events. It was probably more important to take the twin messages about men facing up to cancer and ill health, and how gambling can destroy family life. These were messages our community will benefit from. Well done John.

In respect of league positions etc the Celtic game has no effect wheras ict are playing for a european place so for that reason it should be on telly – whether anyone will watch it is another thing

  14. Afternoon all

Never been sure if BBJ would have made a difference – who would have been left out?- but I wish we’d had him to bring on. Mind you (at the time) I’d have had wee Shaun in instead of Chris Sutton so what did and do I know?
